Thanks AJ ^_^

Yeah haha, it's been a while, and I've been busy improving. Although right now I'm putting 3D stuffs on hold while I work on my drawing techniques.

I haven't tried getting into GW2's 3D database yet, no. Maybe I will try sometime, it'd be fun to try and retexture some things. Make Orr a pretty landscape! Wooo!

Sorry, but at the moment, there is not enough gold in the game to bribe me to model any of the armors or characters. It simply takes too long, and I don't want to spend all that time modeling stuff :) I much rather draw!

Oookey, so I started drawing my current and final Sylvari, Jareth.

He's a bit different from my beta Sylvari, but the pose and portrait feel will be similar.

Hope it'll turn out good, gonna put some extra touches in there.

Ok, here's a first 10 minute sketch of poor guy (looking so ugly, I am very insecure about sketches actually :( )

well, looks good, and do not feel that way, it is very good. Try not to think about what you will draw, after you have a big picture of what you actually want to draw. Set up light early, and do not be afraid to set up lightning before detailing.

Did you check Feng Zhu free tutorials? If you didn;t, check them out. From chaos to awesomeness, with great teaching tips :D

@CKABEH: Thanks for the tip! This pic was really just the main look and dimensions of my Sylvari, no lighting or anything taken into consideration at all yet :)
I usually restart the drawing after the initial 10 minute sketch, occasionally looking over to the sketch to see what I imagined.

So now I will start to block in some basic shapes and lighting. ^_^

Looks like a good start!   I don't know if I asked but you use Photoshop?   I'm trying to decide if I want to break down and get PS after the latest update of the GNU Image Manipulation Program freeware that I use proved to be so terrible I instantly un-installed it.

@Doctor O: Yep, I use Photoshop CS5 E. In my opinion, it's so totally worth it.
I used GIMP for a long time, and didn't really feel like I was ready to make the transition... then I said ehh screw it, took the plunge, and never looked back. :D

BTW, the more I look at it, the more I dislike the sketch lol xD I can't believe I posted it. But I think it's a necessary step for me to do this, to accept that there is such a thing as unfinished and scrap looking drawings.

Damn 3D conditioning. xD

UPDATE:

Grr... This is taking way too long. I can't draw a shit's worth of a glass ball D:
Worked way too much on the face. Taking shape, but it's still very meh....
I don't know if the colorlessness is trowing me off... pfff

EDIT: I realized what the problem is... Poor thing is holding something resembling a glass cookie.
I need to fix that ball. Take photos of my own contact juggling balls, if necessary, dammit xD

EDIT 2: I draw him without armor, because I don't have enough money for a Tier 2 cultural armor, and any other armor besides the plant-y look is ridiculous looking on him. So I couldn't take reference screenshots of him with relevant armor.

Put that in a spoiler tag, cause here is the updated version:

Glass ball looking better, I fixed the fingers a bit too.

OK now can anyone tell me how to color b&w pic like this?

You use a separate layer on top of it, that's set to Overlay or Colour mode, and then paint the colours you want on that layer. You can play around with the other layer modes too, sometimes you can get interesting results that way. You'll probably need to lighten or darken the underdrawing in some spots, which can be done with very light use of the dodge/burn tool - or adding white/black to a new layer that's right on top of the b&w drawing.

This is the only tutorial I could come up with on such short notice: http://ranoartwork.d...orial-202679502

Can't wait to see your sylvari finished! He's coming along very nicely. :)

@Perynne: Thanks so much! I should've figured it was something with layer mode xD
I wanted to try this method of painting, I've seen many pros do it, though I find it so strange! It makes sense I suppose, what looks good in grayscale should look really nice in color, but we'll see!

Thought I'm kind of already thinking of redrawing him xD

I'll finish this one, then maybe I'll draw a quicker one in another angle and pose, with a better crystal sphere. More Labyrinth style :D

Hopefully I'll feel like taking a couple of commissions... Konig has first dibs at that.

All righty! I abandoned that picture of Jareth, because...... I finally managed to gather the necessary 7 gold for his Tier 2 Cultural armor! ^_^

I'm gonna do a re-draw with him wearing it. Gonna be so much better! *rubs hands together* Finally!

Heh, I understand needing to make your character look good if you're going to draw them!

I'm still trying to figure out how to do creative stuff while still jumping into the game.

awesome sylvari! more more

I know i'm a bit late to the party but if you're looking to colour gray images i'd recommend using a slightly different method, that is first you need to merge/flatten the image, then go to Image > Adjustments > Selective color in photoshop (Assuming you are using this), then select Whites, Neutrals or Blacks from the dropdown Colors: menu and add colour to each of the different shades using the sliders.
Using this method you can transform the blacks and whites into darker/lighter shades as well which makes it much more suitable if you didn't draw the picture specifically to be coloured (for example you can change absolute blacks to purple to add a bit of life to it). Then you can go ahead and add layers with different blend modes on top of that, color dodge works well for brightening, multiply for darkening and overlay for in-betweens, basically it's a good idea to fiddle with all of the blend modes to see what looks best!

While the most I've had at one time has been 7 gold, I've probably accumilated approximately 15 gold by now. Now I only got about 4-5 gold though. :P

That's really cute!   Then for some reason it got creepy when I started to think of it as a quaggen magically shrunk down and trapped in a little specimen bottle.    I guess the Halloween season is getting to me :)

Amazing piece of crafting!

Foo! Quaggan don't like being trapped in glass. Let quaggan swim free.

Sooo cute! I love how the quaggan is in a miniature underwater world of it's own. :3 What did you make the quaggan out of?

And a side question: Are you interested in joining the Wintersday calendar project? It's ok if you don't have time, I was just wondering since I'd love to have your creativeness showcased in the calendar too. :)
