UPDATE 8/23/12

Emblem builder is out of date. We have ambition to update it, but we are going to wait until we see what ArenaNet does with their extended experience. While we wait I'll be pecking at the emblems. Once we are fairly sure ArenaNet isn't going to put out a builder of their own we'll put some serious work on it.

Neither Tarral nor myself are keen to do all that work only to have ArenaNet whip their own version out on us. The original project was born out of the missus being on summer break with not much to do, and waiting for the game to release. But now we have GW2 to play and she is back on the job. It was a fun project and we'll be happy to keep it going if ArenaNet doesn't do one outside of the game. But for now it is on hold.

Of course if any of the fine folks at ArenaNet wants to drop either of us a line and give us an indication one way or another that will speed up (or end) our timetable. We are both quite discreet. You can trust us honest!

This is the other half behind the emblem creator! I'm working on those fixes and aesthetic adjustments right now, so a new, improved version should be ready soon.

We certainly welcome anyone to use it and test it out. If you find any problems or can think of some other way it could be improved, let us know!  This emblem creator will eventually (hopefully within the next 2-3 weeks) become part of a website about GW2 guilds, so we certainly want the best finished product we can!

Please increase the size of the color selection tool (for the background), as it is very hard to pick certain colors now.

Cool that you made this tool, would certainly save guilds some time and perhaps let their members vote for or propose their own designs.

curious i saw there was gold in background but not for actual emblems is that in game or just not ready yet

All the colors are sampled directly from the game, and we put in all the current color choices. We did notice as we were working on it that the button colors are slightly darker than the colors that actually show up on the emblems themselves (which is something we are fixing in the new version that should be posted tonight so that it matches the in-game creator better.)

The only colors that don't come from in-game are the ones you can choose for the background (not the background shapes, just the overall background.) I just put in the color picker for the background because you might like to see how your guild emblem might look on WvW banners, PvP gear, guild weapons, or any of the 400 dye colors!

Also, as an update for everyone, the newest version of the emblem creator is now posted.  It includes all the fixes/adjustments stated in Basharic's original post:

• Colors on the displayed emblems more accurately match in-game colors
  
• Background shapes color and transparency more closely match in-game
  
• New grey background is in emblem field in place of the old red background
  
• More game-like overall background and appearance and better layout
  
• Emblem buttons and background shape buttons change colors to match your color selections
  
• Minor positioning tweaks on some emblems

Why can't we just upload our own jpg/tiff/gif files into the game as our emblem like other games?

I agree, but I think some games shy away from that because it's the internet. For every awesome guild emblem someone would create there would be a dozen badly drawn penises. Call it the Second Life effect.

With two colors, it looks like there are two creatures. The unicorn, and something else. Now what's the unicorn doing to the other creature ?

It has been updated one more time - now it has each selection you are currently using highlighted for your convenience, so it is easier to see exactly which colors/emblems/backgrounds you are using to make that "perfect" guild emblem, even if it is a pink unicorn!

Let us know if you have any issues or see anything else that could use improvement.

Our guild appreciates it, been fiddling and choosing our design ever since.
Only thing with the emblems (and this is more for anet, nothing wrong with your creator), is that they haven't thought through one thing. Turn the heart uspide down, put a face on it (eg the Kormir one) and boom. Instant boobies.

Cool, I never quite got to play with the emblem editor in the BWEs.  I see they're reusing several of the GW1 emblems, including the foaming mug!  I have an attachment to that, it being my entry for the first guild emblem contest.

Its an odd decision to make the further back legs on the unicorn and lion rampant crests, just a strange effect.  You'd think they'd have used the secondary color for highlights...

This is fantastic, but is there any chance you could make it output PNGs without a background? That would be a huge help for every guild leader out there that wants to put their guild emblem on their site.

Interesting idea - I hadn't thought of that. I can look into it, but the way I have the code right now it's not gonna work

I do know that a picture with a background can be adjusted in photoshop or illustrator to make the background transparent, and it is a quick thing to do. I've done it a few times, and know there are several tutorials out there!

Ah, thanks! Sadly I don't have Photoshop. I dabble a little in graphic design, but mostly in either Paint.NET or Inkscape (the latter being like Illustrator). I just can't seem to get the tolerance values right to keep in the alpha values on the edges of the emblems. Still, thanks!

As for GW2, Im not sure what I will use, theres some good options, I wish there were a few more new guild emblems though, not so much from GW1 and I wish the phoenix emblem would return.

Overall though great tool!

Regarding the topic... I heard rumor that there were supposed to be new Emblems coming that we didn't have to pick from in the first betas (possibly DAT-mined ones?) ...did any of those happen to end up in this tool? My guild was very unsatisfied with the original selection of emblems so we really need a bigger selection sometime before launch  (even if it's a day or so before headstart begins).  Any help with that here?
