I have my heart set on Human Mesmer. I also love being the hipster in MMORPGs.

Although the data might be a bit old, the results are interesting, but not necessarily surprising.
If something like this is done in the future, after launch, I hope it will also include gender.

I believe gender is a contributing factor in some of the choices, for both race and gender selections.

It looks like my stylin' human mesmer (male)  and my naturalist Sylvari necromancer (male) are "mainstream," and my human (female) engineer, sporting her monacle, is more rare, or "hipster."  (I wonder if she knows that, lol.)

Really mainstream, here. All my class choices are the second most popular per race, save my ranger. Who I was going to the have be a Sylvari, but then I thought that was way too obvious, haha. Guess I'll have to try harder for originality in the looks department!

yeah, I think that too. The fact that I never found anyone on any other MMO forum in 15+ years of gaming with a name similar to it, let alone the same, only corroborates my suspicion.

Anyway, back on topic! I switched from Human Thief to Human Mesmer as 5th profession. Does this make me suddenly as mainstream as they come?

While Gw2Census is by far the biggest poll, I also think that it's way too outdated and probably pretty off.
Keep in mind that people were submitting their characters LONG before we actually got to play the game. I think it was up before the mesmer was even released. Would be fun to see how it would change if they reset it and got everyone to submit their character again.

With that said I'm going for a Human Ranger, so pretty mainstream!

Well, gender is already included in the Census poll. Unfortunately, the Census' charts are not detailed enough to know the gender ratio for each prof/race combination. We can know how many charr are female, we can know how many Mesmers are female, but we can't know how many charr Mesmers are female...
I'll try contacting the Census' creator, see if we can get more detailed data because I'm also very curious about this.

If I remember correctly, GW2 Census was indeed running before the Mesmer profession announcement (with a possibility to vote for the "to be announced" profession), but the poll results were reset afterwards. So the data we have here is all post-Mesmer announcement.
The data is likely a bit influenced by the excitement created by the announcement, but out of almost 30,000 answers, this influence can't be really big.
As I said, this data is interesting because of the huge number of answers, which makes it more likely to be close to the reality, but it's far from perfect for oh so many reasons. Also keep in mind that multiple characters can be submitted to the Census (I think it's limited to 5 per IP: the number of character slots we get without any upgrades), so it's not only main characters but also alts.


There's 29,864 characters on the Census now, and it keeps growing steadily. I'll update my document when it hits 30,000. I'm also working on some more graphically pleasing charts for each race and profession, hopefully they'll be ready by then!


Oh, and guys? Chill. I never meant anything good or bad with the hipster or mainstream thing. I made this for people curious about race/prof choices. Whether you make you choice based on others' choice, whether you try to be original or just don't care and make what you like best: it's your choice, and that's that.

Thanks for the awesome spreadsheet, JohnFireEye. I hope you don't mind if I copied it to tweak it a bit. This shows which races are likely to "favour" or "dislike" certain professions. Your current spreadsheet doesn't factor in the effect of the inherent popularity of a profession or race, so naturally Human/X combos topped the charts. I thought it'd be interesting to see how much more/less likely you are to choose a profession if you choose a certain race.

The spreadsheet is good if you want to choose a specific race or profession, but you don't know if your choice is "mainstream" or "hipster" for that race/profession.

What stands out? The obvious, tbh.

The most disproportionately popular profession choices for races (i.e. trend-followers) are:
-Engineer for Charr
-Warrior for Charr
-Warrior for Norn
-Engineer for Asura

The most disproportionately unpopular profession choices for races (i.e. hipster-bait) are:
-Mesmer for Charr
-Elementalist for Charr
-Warrior for Sylvari
-Mesmer for Norn
-Ranger for Asura
-Warrior for Asura
-Engineer for Sylvari

Suggesting to me that:
-Charr are possibly the least diverse race in terms of classes (predominantly Warriors/Engineers?)
-Norn are second in this regard (predominantly Warriors/Rangers?)
-Engineers are predominantly seen as compatible with Charr and Asura race choices
-Humans are probably the most "mixed" race in terms of profession choice
-Few races have strong tendencies to choose/reject Necromancer, although the Sylvari seem to like them
-Similarly, few races tend to over-choose/over-reject the Thief profession
