I'd really appreciate any thoughts you have on the following.

I find myself in the position of being able to buy a long-overdue new system before GW2 is released. My budget is 750-850GBP, and I'd like to get a mid-specced gaming laptop with Blu Ray and SSD or at least a hybrid drive.

I've found that samsung are running a cashback promotion on selected laptops and SSDs, and was considering getting the RF711-S08UK for £640 (£100 off) in addition to a Samsung 256GB SSD for about £130 (£20 off). At £770 (down from £890), this would put me at the low-ish end of my budget. So let's see what I'd get:

-i7 2670QM processor. Not the fastest out there, but good enough for intensive tasks?
-8GB RAM. Seems pretty standard for high-level usage.
-GeForce GT 540M. The weak link here, no doubt about it.
-1TB@5,400RPM + 256GB SSD. The real bonus here, may not improve gaming too much, but loading times will be better and I just want the machine to be snappier all-round.
-Blu Ray.

So, is it worth it? I think I will have to compromise in terms of gaming performance, but will the overall decent spec make GW2 playable at High-ish settings? It's worth mentioning that the 17.3" screen's native resolution is 1600x900. That's what I have at the moment, and I like it because I find that 1920x1080 shrinks websites etc. to about half the screen!

I'd love to hear what you all think. Also if you guys have seen any good deals (in the UK), let me know!

There is absolutely no way that GPU will run at high settings in 1600x900, my ASUS has a 540m and while I havn't used it for the beta weekends I am unable to run even Starcraft 2 at medium to high settings using 1680x1050. Guild wars 2 seems much more hungry for GPU power than starcraft 2 judging from use on my desktop PC

I would not advice you to buy any kind of laptop if you want to get a good gaming experience on 1080p with high settings, there is such a huge difference in GPU power when using a desktop GPU. And maxing settings in GW2 is within your budget as long as get a desktop

If you really want mobility you will have to be satisfied with low to medium graphics or spend crazy money on a gaming laptop

For 1600x900, something like a 650m would be perfect, but a 540m will run the game with a playable framerate at some settings, you'll have to keep some things like shadows to a minimum, no AA, but the rest should be ok for mostly medium. I found shadows to be a real performance hog in every beta and AA is obviously always a hog as well.

The 540M is better suited for 1366 x 768 to be honest --- I would drop BluRay and spend more on a true Gaming GPU if it was my money....  BluRay without a 1080p screen is kind of a waste isn't it?  *is confused*

the 540m is the obvious bottleneck like what you said.
The 2670QM is a great processor, but
the GPU runs at balanced or lower at 13xx X 7xx
I do not recommend the 1600 X 900 with GT540m. If it was 13XX X 7xx then yes

Thanks for the advice! I guess while the price looks good, the spec is just not up to scratch for decent quality.

That said, has anyone been through the whole range of quality settings? How much better is the experience at the top compared to the bottom of the range in terms of res, AA, shadows etc.? Worth the extra spending?

Also, I'm considering fitting PCSpecialist Optimus III with an i7 3610QM processor, 8GB RAM, a GT 650M, a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB Hybrid HDD, and Blu Ray. With a couple extras this would cost me about £867, at the high end of my budget. Of course I could drop the Blu Ray but the extra expense might just have to be my problem!

My main rig runs a 2600k gtx 670  4gb at ultra np, but my RoG laptop can only run 1600x900 on medium settings.  Specs: 2670qm 560m, ssd, 12gb ram.  I tested the laptop during the stress test and the laptop ran the game fairly well.  You will have some lower fps during WvW no matter what setting you have it atbased on my testing.
