I was thinking of taking Reanimator while leveling:

But I was wondering if the Jagged Horrors only last a certain amount of time, slowly lose health, or just stick around until they die like our other pets. The wiki mentions you can have 8 at once, but that's also through the ability in Lich form.

they don't last that long. 10s maybe? Could be less

If they have a limited duration why did they add a cooldown which is clearly longer than the duration of the minion it self?
Taking a trait just to get one crappy minion for 10s is a waste.

Why do you think you have a choice ?
Reanimator is a minor trait. If you have 5 or more points in Death magic, you have it.

Indeed I forgot it was a minor trait, but they should at least just limit the number of spawns not their duration.

This trait is a joke and I wish I could turn it off. The horror lasts 5-6 seconds, I can't even drag it from the end of one battle to the start of the next. It's no bigger than a rabbit and just as effective in combat.
To make matters worse, my character keeps waxing poetic about the merits of the damn thing whenever it dies. Every 30 seconds, I have to suffer through another repetitive soundbyte.
Useless, I can live with, but when it gets annoying on top of that, it's too much.

Do they at least trigger the death nova poison cloud thing when they die if you have that slotted?

I should hope so, it's the one feature that might redeem this stupid trait. I'm only level 25 on my necromancer so I can't tell.
