Doesn't bother me as my attention is usually focused around the center of the camera. They should put an option for those who don't enjoy it

That is when they get red and distracting as I said before. x_x (In down state they are worse)
And it seems that they change from area to area. And when you hide the UI, they dissapear.

Lol I had to dive back into my screenshot folder to confirm any evidence of this mysterious border that I'd incidentally never noticed before until now.  Shows just how much it bothers me. :P

@above: oh no no no, that kind of 'at a glance' stuff has to stay.  That pulsating border, while distracting as it may be to some, tells you anything from whether you're confused to bleeding... without having to flit your attention span to a tiny little icon tucked away somewhere around the UI.

I bet 90% of people didn't noticed that.

Now, to answer the question: I like it. This game is incredible artistic in every way. It is 100% art, love it.

They're only visible when the UI is visible:

Spoiler

When you hide the UI (Ctrl + Shift + H) they disappear:

Spoiler

They're part of the "bleed" system that turns the edges of your window red as you're losing health and coming close to being downed.

Hm, never noticed them. The only black bars I've noticed are during the cinematics after switching to a 1920x1080 screen. On my lower res screen they weren't there.

I never noticed until you pointed it out, so no, it doesn't bother me. I have noticed the borders encroaching further and further into the screen as my health drops, which provides an added visual cue that you are in trouble. I like this very much, actually. However, I had never even realized there was some border at all times, so it's pretty unobtrusive, IMO.

I like the black borders, and I think that how they 'close in' as you lose health is a neat effect that's a bit like tunnel vision, which I can imagine one would have when fighting for their life.

Thanks for explaining all this. I don't actually mind the red indicator that you are bleeding, most games do that.
I just don't see the point of it being there permanently All The Time.

People pointed out that it's like a picture frame. Well, walking with a picture frame around your face is weird, for me.

PS. Jokerx7, what do you mean by change from area to area? 'What' changes?

We have had this thing I call "border-less windows" for a long time.

Now, I never play GW1 so don't judge me if that's how it has been.

I find the Black Borders in GW2 distracting and messy.

I mean I feel like I'm playing in a wonky resolution, usually we try NOT

to have any black borders at all cost, so I dunno.

And they especially don't look good in videos and pictures.

I never paid any attention to it. But now that you so thoughtfully pointed it out it could cause a distraction

Since the whole selling point of the GW2 graphics is the 'painterly' style and the borders make the screen look like a canvas, which is fitting for 'painterly', and since the borders are part of the UI and thus hidden when I take my screens and videos, they don't bother me at all :P

Oh, it's brush strokes like the concept art. That's cool. I didn't really even notice it...so no it doesn't distract me at all!

I actually really like the black borders. It makes me forget that I'm playing a video game, as strange as that may sound.

The black borders shape.
I said that because she said exactly what I said 3-4 mins before, except for that. xD

Wow, looks like I am one of the many which only noticed them now (well, at least the side ones, noticed the top one before). The action within the game means that you dont really notice them anyway (hell, they are only a couple of pixels wide).

I don't like them, or the way they glow in combat. I don't find it distracting I just think it looks like trash. There's already too many effects on the screen. Simple UI should be simple.

Another example of them changing, only difference is I never moved (changed servers).

So maybe they change when you go through loading screens or something similar?

I haven't noticed it at all.

I've been playing since the second beta weekend and it hasn't been an issue once.

I noticed them, but didn't think much of them, since when they appear in game they blend in to the frame of my monitor. Looking at them now, I like them. :)

Never noticed. i guess it's like letterbox, for some people they just don't pay attention to it, and for others they forget it's there after a while. As for why it's there though, I'm pretty sure it has to do with the painted looking aesthetic they are going with for the game.

I only noticed it on the top and bottom and it was never anywhere near distracting.  It fits the whole aesthetic they're going with for the UI.  I personally like it quite a bit, even though I barely notice it.

An option to disable it would be nice; more options can't hurt.

I don't notice them, evne though I've been made aware of the fact that they exist here and there. They should really make them optional, though.

ROFL dude are you OCD? just get over it. If something so little bothers you then you have bigger issues then in this game. I never noticed it until you pointed it out but now that you've pointed it out i still don't give a rats ass lol.

remember that they said (in the manifesto trailer right?) that they wanted you to feel that you walk in a piece of art...
a small picture frame does that job well... i'd like it with the UI disabled as well... makes a great background wallpaper for my screen :D
