Considering their intended purpose is to be a long term gold sink, the more expensive they are the better they are at doing their job.

Only until they become pricey enough people start feeling it's worth it to try and avoid them.

But also they said it would cost something to the players to travel through this waypoints, "a player that decides to walk to the objective instead of teleporting will be rewarded"

That wasn't meant to say: "Hey you walked all the way, you can save your money, congrats!"
More likely they meant, and i thought they even said that right after this sentence.., : "Hey you walked all the way, experienced this event and that encounter and made so many great memories, congrats!"

they'd have to become incredibly pricey for that, I doubt someone is gonna walk 4-6 zones to get to Orr for a dungeon run to save 5 silver when people are waiting for them. :P

They get pretty discouraging inside a zone by level 20. To waypoint from one to the next in Queensdale was costing nearly 20 copper for my level 20 character. Do that 5 times and it's a silver, plus I was only a quarter of the way to the level cap.

They are not supposed to be expensive because they are supposed to be used as much as possible to take as much money as they can from the economy

I'm pretty sure it was a conscious design decision to make them cheap, to encourage people to use them a lot. I confess to being surprised they're as cheap as they are. I do think if enough people make a habit of porting all over the place that does take quite a bit of gold out of the system.

You should've seen my face when I opened up my game stats page for GTA4 and I saw how much cab fare I had spent over the course of that game.

Oh yes, that's the premise of microtransactions, and works with both real money and virtual. :)

See i'm the opposite. I understand their ment as a money sink, but since they already have armor repair as a money sink I think any amount is too much. There is such a thing a making players pay for to much and having to go from one place to another by portals is gouging the players I think.

Well it's practically the same as making armor repair for free, hell why not, why not just make everything for free then?
There is such thing as "service fee".

Waypoints? 5 coppers? When?

I think waypoints scale based on how far away you are. If you're pretty close and in the same zone, it'll be something like 12 coppers. If you're further away, it's like 35. If you're hopping a few zones... a few silver.

It actually adds up pretty quickly. It's definitely not too cheap.

Many people in this thread are completely unaware that waypoints scale with both distance (obviously) and also your own level.

I feel way points should in fact decrease in cost the further distance taken, but have near ones increased to the average value of intermediate distances.

This would encourage players to walk instead of porting for silly short distances while making it more economical for far travels.

I like that idea really.

Pretty sure the money cost will scale with your game progression or the distance between portals.

How are waypoints that much different than map travel in GW1?

Map travel didn't have a fee...

Gold sink + they map you not to an outpost, but a specific place in an explorable zone.

I think they should have a few free waypoints here and there, like in the small outposts and villages, this way you can always play with your friends even if you have no mone

We haven't even seen the farthest distance you can travel.  For all we know, that might be like 7 silver, more or less.  And thats not something you should be doing often because it will add up quickly.  Come launch, you might have an extremely different view on waypoints.

I like this idea as well.  It encourages exploration which seems to fit ArenaNets goal.

I think you can use waypoints if you have no money. They were designed as a gold sink rather than a restriction and I know at one point you could use them free if you had no money in inventory AND bank, that way people could still play with friends even broke.

Not sure if this stayed ingame though as I haven't seen anyone mention it for ages

really? I know when you die and have no $$$ you can use waypoints for free, but didn't know about this.

Indeed that is a very good reward.  I never played gw1 so this waypoint idea is awkward to me, but ill get used to it

the only time I use waypoints is to skip straight to a personal story quest. Otherwise I walk every where. If you warp everywhere, you are wasting valuable early game copper and missing out on what the game is all about. The random events!

I was using waypoints extensively during BWEs and stress tests due to only having a small window to play.

But I do think there's a lot of virtue to just walking everywhere in this game. What with the level scaling and the chance to randomly explore or find a dynamic event you've not seen before, waypoints can be wasteful.
