So basically as the title says. I just started looking at this game a short while ago, and while I have a basic familiarity with most aspects of the game I never got to play in a BWE. My two friends that are going to play with me have already chosen a warrior and an elementalist as their classes for our group play. The elementalist friend has decided to bring the booms and be basically our main source of damage. The warrior doesn't really know what he wants to do yet. Every profession looks interesting to me so I was wondering which one would help out the group the most. We plan on doing mainly pve to level, but I'm sure we will dip into the spvp and wvw as well. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

I'd recommend the Warrior be somewhat control orientated since KD/Stun has great synergy with a damage orientated through the trait Grounded (http://wiki.guildwar...m/wiki/Grounded). If he chooses a damage secondary weapon and specs correctly, he can still push out a lot of damage. I'd recommend something like Hammer/Axe/X (X could be Shield, Axe, Mace or Warhorn).

For you I'd recommend Guardian. It has great defensive supportive capabilities (and support is what you are missing) and brings things like AoE conditional removal and more AoE Stability to the table for PvP. With a Hammer Warrior and Support Guardian you are also bringing the all great Weakness + Protection combo for PvE.

Guardian is an excellent blanket choice for this.  I'd also recommend Ranger or Thief, since you will have many combo opportunities with a Warrior and Elementalist in play with you.

Of course, you could always opt for something a little strange and go Mesmer.  From my experience they are difficult on their own, but with the right team of mitigation and damage (war and ele especially) you will greatly benefit from their abilities.

As a mesmer you will become an excellent puller / distracter and have viable, if somewhat random, buffs and conditions all around.

Anything else and you'll likely be bored or find you won't use have your skills before it's time to move to the next group.  Necro and Engineer will experience this, but you'll shine when a vet comes calling.

Thank you for the thoughtful and timely responses. I hadn't really considered guardian, but now that you mention it that seems like a good fit. Ranger might also work, but I've played a ranger class in so many games that I think the switch to a defensive type profession might be a fun change for me. All of the professions look so good that I'm sure I will try them all at some point haha. Also thank you Ivarr for the warrior advice. My friend looked at the post and said that he is going to try out your suggestions.

Let me start with sPvP since it is more difficult and min-maxxing is more beneficial.

Like the poster above, with you as a Guardian you have a really formidable 3 man team. You could round it out with any classes really.

Engineer is also very versatile. Check out the Engineer forums--people seem to really have fun with their Engineers. It is an adaptable class. You can use a flamethrower or provide very good support with an Elixir gun.

Of course, play what you like. Things may change anyway. But Guardian or Engineer would make for a good team. Every group seems to have a Guardian nowadays.

Since your Elementalist friend wants the Boom and Warriors Smash, a hybrid class seems like it could fill whatever niche you need at the moment.

For PvE, I like the suggestion of Mesmer.

Go with what you enjoy playing the most. Each class can adapt to fit a role, you could play effectively even with 3 elementalists.

Olim has the best answer I've seen so far, but if you really want input from random people on the internet who am I to judge? I would honestly say Engineer would be a great choice. You could go support if your ele friend wanted you to, you can do pretty good damage, you can control with debuffs, it is a really well rounded class.

Disagree. Every profession being able to play every role is not the same as every group composition being optimal. People seem to be making this mistake a lot lately.

No profession has access to every boon/condition in sufficient quantity. No profession has access to every mechanic (such as boon stripping) in sufficient quantity. Furthermore, if you want to compete at a meta game level you have to make use of profession synergy (such as the Grounded trait).

PvE example: If you take 5 Warrior in to a dungeon you have little access to protection, making the composition less than optimal.

PvP example: If you take 5 Warriors in to SPvP you have limited access to boon stripping. Boon stripping will be required for most meta game team builds in SPvP.

I understand that I should play what I want, but as Ivarr is saying there are groups that work very well together and that is really what I am looking for.  Every class looks interesting enough that I have very little preference. At some point I am sure that my friends and I will try some triple elementalists to just straight up try and destroy things, but for the first combination that we make I would like to try and create a party that has access to the most possible beneficial things to speed the leveling process. To this point I am now looking at the suggestions of guardian and engineer and seeing which will bring the most to my friends. The one thing I am unsure of is how much survivability is required for pve as I have not played the BWE's. If it could be just the three of us full out damaging that would be fun, and I would pick a glass cannon class and build and bring some noise. If pve monsters actually require more finesse and planning than that then the guardian or engineer seems like very good support professions to round out my group.
