Hey all,
Sorry if I'm posting this in the wrong section, or this has already been asked several times...but seeing as many of us will be playing GW2 in a weeks time, I wanted to ask you guys, what are the best / most odd Race / Proff combos?
Perhaps even some good names?

The most logical (for me) :

Charr - Warrior, Engineer, Ranger
Asura - Elementalist, Engineer, Necro, Guardian
Human - All except Engineer.
Sylvari - Thief, Necro, Ranger
Norn - Ranger, Warrior, Guardian

Some of the odder combinations:

Asura Ranger
Sylvari Engineer
Charr Mesmer
Norn Mesmer, Necro.

Charr Names:
Short names / names ending in "K" (Rytlock, e.c.t)
Asura:
Quite short names / names with mystical, technological sounds. (Vixx, Vexx, e.c.t)
Human:
Greek / Ancient Roman sounding names always work well. (Athene)
Sylvari:
Certainly the hardest to name. Nature sounding names, elven sounding names perhaps.
Norn:
Short names, 2 word names sound particularly nice, (Jora, Tyr, e.c.t)
A lot of you may disagree. These are all just my opinions :)
Let me know what you think though :)

For stereotypes I'd agree with everything except Charr Mesmer being weird. If you've played GW1 they're everywhere - Charr Chaots they were called.

I don't think "Best" is the right word to use. There is no best.

Best makes it sound like you're better off picking an Asura Elementalist over an Asura Warrior. Which isn't necessarily true.

Grasping Roots (Sylvari racial) still has 33% more range and a better duration mechanic than Throw Bola, even though it has been nerfed. Throw Bola is a highly used warrior skill. So Sylvari make better warriors because they have a better option than Throw Bola that other races don't have. One thing I don't know first hand- does GR cast as fast as TB?

You can call it minimal, but it shows that there MAY be a "most beneficial" race for your profession and playstyle. I say getting your ranged immobilize at 1200 instead of 900 AND forcing the victim to change targets to attack the roots is a pretty big reason to actually pay attention to the racials, and not just take ANets word that they won't affect your race/profession choice. Even if they turn out to be right, there is reason to look more closely.

Of course for sPvP it doesn't matter.

I think Norn thief seems weird and I am not even sure if practical (I know it was not listed above but I am considering it). I usually consider more magical based characters for me a Mesmer seems appealing but there is something about the thief I would like to try.

I am set on Norn, but when I think Norn I think Warrior or Guardian.

What are you thoughts?

Charr Warrior & Norn Ranger for me, will be my main two classes I think ( I intend to make them all of course). When you see the animal animations on the ranger for example with the greatsword, seeing the bear animation where it slams down on target foe just screams Norn spirits of the wild to me. As for my Charr Warrior, it will be my main but nothing seems more badass to me than a bloody thirsty Charr in Heavy Armour.

"Most plausible" is closer to the OP's meaning than "best."

I'm going to have to gripe with Norn guardian as being a very good fit for a Norn, as the Norn are very independent and generally prefer to make a name for themselves without others' aid if possible. Guardians, on the other hand, have one of the heaviest emphases on support builds of any profession not named engineer.

In my opinion Norn Mesmers make perfect sense thanks to the Raven Spirit, plus it feels very Loki like from Norse Mythology, and with the Norn being based on the Norse it just makes sense to me.

For me these are the most logical combos:

Human: All the professions
Sylvari: Mesmer, Elementalist, Ranger, Warrior
Asura: Thief, Engineer, Guardian, Mesmer, Elementalist
Norn: Warrior, Ranger, Elementalist
Charr: Warrior, Necromancer, Engineer

These are the weirder ones in my opinion:

Human: -
Sylvari: Necromancer, Engineer
Asura: Warrior
Norn: Mesmer, Thief
Charr: Thief, Elementalist, Ranger

As for names, I don't really know. I won't be roleplaying so all proper names go fine for every race and profession.

On Sylvari Names:
In general Sylvari do not have last names,  First names are typically 1) common words from any language from the British Isles that is not English.  In other words: Irish, Gaelic, Celtic (are these all the same thing?), Welsh, Scottish, Anglo Saxon.   2) names of plants are good too, in particular flower names for females, tree names for males.

As for Sylvari last names, "canon" says they don't have them, but with 2 million people playing Sylvaris, there are simply not enough words in the Irish/ Gaelic/ Celtic/ Welsh/ Scottish/ Anglo dictionaries.  One close to canon solution is to make up last names that represent what part of the day your Sylvari was born, as this is a big deal to Sylvari.  Good last names:

Daybreak
Dawn
Morning
Sunrise
Day
Highsun
Afternoon
Eve
Evening
Sunset
Twilight
Darkness
Night

You could also translate these into the canon languages like "Nyht" is Anglo for Night.

I am planning a Sylvari Mesmer named "Aria Dawn" which was the very first character I created in Guild Wars 1 seven years ago. (and also a Mesmer)  The fact that the name seems canonical is just a happy coincidence.

I'm not sure why charr mesmers are seen as an odd choice either... but hey, if they continue being rare as a choice I'm not complaining; I prefer it that way. :P  Mesmer is an odd looking prof' presentation wise anyway... I think anything but the asura mesmers are scrutinized in a questionable way.  Eh, like you say there were plenty of charr mesmers around in the original game... I know I know but but Flame Legion but I thought this was about how a race looks as the class, more than if it's possible or not.  I'd think even non Gold/Flame legion charr would love the domineering ways of the mesmer.

Makes me wonder how rare tengu mesmers would be if they were to be added... I think they'd be rare... and yet not so rare if they allow more colourful individuals to be crafted.

As far as Sylvari names go, I went around it by taking into account names of tree's, plants, etc. e.g. Willow, Ash, Maple and so on, then try incorporating these in with other sounds/ letters :)

In the game guide, they mention what the characters names are usually based off of.

Charr: Their first names are usually Roman or Grecian and their last names are usually based off their warband and then an additional word or two to reflect their ferocious or warlike nature.

Humans: Usually have European/English/American first and last names,  but general fantasy names work just as well.

Norn: Their first names are usually Northern European or Viking-style, their last names are usually based off their mother or father's first name followed by son or dottir.

Asura: Usually have very short first names that consists of one to two syllables, their last names are usually based upon their job title, their krewe name, or an honorific.

Sylvari: They are mostly based off Celtic/Irish names, they don't usually have last names but general fantasy or elven names follow their theme.

I hope that helped in some way! :D

I don't think I've ever seen a Charr mesmer.  In retrospect, I kind of wish I had rolled one.  It's uncommon to see a Charr caster in general.

I rarely if ever see female Charr either.

I went with pretty stereotypical race/role combinations, except for maybe my Norn thief.
