What is #GW2Ringer?
Taking inspiration from competitive games in the past, #GW2Ringer is the solution to the problem of teams missing that one person from having a fifth, or forming pick-up groups for tournaments.

Although Guild Wars 2 allows rosters to be comprised of players from differing Worlds, there is no actual way for players to find each other, at least not yet. #GW2Ringer allows teams and players to find each other with ease through IRC. For those un-fimiliar, there have been instances of games that do not have their own system of finding a group or team to play in a competitive setting with. Instead, third-party IRC channels were created to facilitate the finding of ringers or vice versa in the case of a missing team member or creation of a pick-up group. As you can imagine, this is advantageous for several reasons. Examples of these channels span from Counter-Strike to DotA. While it is still possible for ArenaNet to make this an in-game feature, this channel will exist until and after that point as a third-party resource.

The channel is supported by various communities, organizations, teams, and players from Guild Wars 2 subreddit, GW2eSports subreddit, Guild Wars 2 Guru, Boons & Conditions, Team Legacy, Team Paradigm, Super Squad, Alpha Collective, Mostly Harmless, glhf, and Team Synergy. The channel's community has helped it evolve from just a spam channel into a discussion forum between the most named players in the sPvP game.

How do I join #GW2Ringer?
To join the channel, you must connect to Gamesurge. Tutorial found here. Using mIRC, this tutorial will allow you to register and automatically authenticate to your nick upon connecting to Gamesurge.

From there it's as simple as typing "/join #GW2Ringer".

You can also use a web client found here.

How do I use #GW2Ringer?
To advertise in search of a ringer for your team, use the following (or similar) format:
"Looking for [REGION] [TIMEZONE] [CLASS] [RANK REQUIREMENT] [VOIP]!!!"
Example: "Looking for US | EST | Guardian | Rank 10+ | Have MUMBLE!!!"

To advertise, as a ringer, in search of a team, use the following (or similar) format:
"Ringer Available - [REGION] [TIMEZONE] [CLASS] [RANK] [VOIP]!!!"
Example: "Ringer Available - US | EST | Guardian | Rank 13 | Mumble & Vent!!!"

Rules
Automated spam and flood prevention have been set in order to keep the channel from becoming to chaotic, and easier for players to read and use.
  • No flooding. (1 hour ban)
  • No notices sent to the channel. (1 hour ban)
  • A line per time duration spam filter will be set if the channel becomes too populated.
Colors are allowed, be creative in advertising yourself. The right to modify rules is reserved. Moderators will also be present and will take action if needed.

Channel Hierarchy
For ease of recognition, the following channel hierarchy will be used. This will allow for players to recognize those who are in named teams and who may provide reliable and accurate information.
  • Operators (@) - Community Leaders
  • Voice (+) - Named Teams/Players
Future Plans
#GW2Scrim is in the works for when ArenaNet allows for private rentable servers. Much like #GW2Ringer, the channel will allow team (professional level to quick PUGs) to search for other teams to scrimmage against for practice and, in general, quality opponents.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is very much a community project, we can use as much support as possible. The more users there are, the more useful the channel becomes.

This is the place to play against other teams or to get your feet wet with real tournament play.

There have been a couple of teams looking to recruit in here. It's a great place to get to know a team and trial them/let them trial you.

I've been in the chan for a couple of days now, and everyone seems friendly, plus you pick up on some decent content/strat discussions and jumped in with a team last night for a few hours.

I have a question though, generally when I think of a 'ringer' i think of someone who's very good. At this point I'm an average player who does nothing but pvp with aspirations of being a strong pvper (i was in GW, but missed all GW2 betas). Is the intention of the chan just to pickup a strong player, or also to just find a 5th/group?

Ringer just means someone that fills a spot. Quality is really up to the team who's looking. It will be more clear once/if they do a ranking system.

While I've been promoting the service for a while, I finally got to "use" it. A group took me in and we kicked some major butt. Now I have a handful of new sPvP friends that I can team with in the future.
