While reading the dev blogs on the official site, the interviews mentioned realms or servers a couple of times, and from what I understand, players will be able to switch between them. Much like OGW, where you could choose which "district" you're in at outposts, will players in GW2 be able to switch? And how will that affect the world around them? I can't imagine it makes sense to have different servers all running with people switching back and forth at will. You could switch servers and go from being in a tranquil village to a wartorn battlefield, what with the event system being how it is. Has anyone else given any thought to this?

We know literally nothing about this, but it's speculated there will be different servers which you can choose upon logging in. We continue to speculate that each server will be at a different stage in the events cycle, and some servers will be PvP or WvW.

Everytime you exit a city it will be a different situation. I would speculate that major cities cannot be taken by AI, but other outposts can be taken, if that is the case you would choose where you could start if the outpost you were last in was taken.

There are an estimated 1200 events right now, but there could be more and more variations added, so an event cycle could take a year or more to finish, and even if there is a repeat event it will be different based on the number of players present.

I can not think of any problems with been able to change worlds whenever you wish to. If you end up in the middle of a event instead of a  tranquil village, just run away.

I would be more interested in how the hardware behind this functionally is going to work? How are they going to manage to have hundreds of people from 3 different worlds fight each other?

I imagine it will work as follows:

WvW will take place on special servers separate from PvE/PvP etc.  The server will be handed a players session from PvP/PvE realm and then copy any relevant data into the WvW server space - then taking control of the players connection/session needs.

The WvW servers will run separate instance areas for the different tasks/missions and you'll probably get shuttled between those or join a queue if you want a specific map type/task type.

After finishing your WvW session you get returned to your originating server whether that be PvE or PvP.

Just a guess, but thats how its handled in other MMOs.

I should also note that when you get passed to the WvW server it records which of the 3 competing worlds you originate from.

They've said that your account will be associated with a specific world, but that it will be easy to visit your friends on other worlds.  I think there will be a concept of "visiting" (which is probably free) and another one of permanently moving to another world (which will probably cost money).  I also think they will ensure that you can't keep jumping around to whichever world is winning in WvW; e.g. you may not get the benefits for a while if you do this too much.

I think it was once said a long time ago in 2007/2008 that the servers will just be a larger form of the GW1 districts being combined with the style of servers for other MMOs. It'll be free to go between them and they are based on world location (American, European, Asian, International? - perhaps just three for the WvW, which is a three group free for all essentially). So basically, if I recall and if they haven't changed it, it'll be the entire persistent world and in fact instances as well being one large district.

I think this was either brought up in the "3 years of GW" PAX panels or during some interview way back when.

Maybe special asura gates in locations independent of world events would allow you to switch.  If you could switch just anywhere, anytime, then people would just leave the world when an event did not go in the direction they wanted - people would be constantly manipulating the system to into the right event situations.  Having to travel to a specific gate and maybe pay a fee every time would make constant switching a real hassle.

This new info:
http://gw2.univers-v...s-Virtuels.html

UV: Three servers will be at war each week with a predefined rotation. Will players who do not belong to the three concerned servers still be able to fight in the Mists, with no rewards of course?

Eric: A World vs. World match is really about three vast groups of players fighting each others over a variety of objectives, so that their world can obtain certain advantages. Every server is involved in a three-server WvW match in the Mists and players may only fight for the server they currently belong to. Since every server is always involved in a WvW match of some sort, we need to allow players to transfer servers during a WvW matchup. However, since it would not be fair to allow people from other worlds to influence the balance of the battle by constantly moving between servers, we will impose some restrictions for a short amount of time on players who switch servers.

Just to drop a rather 'important' tidbit to this conversation that might clear some confusion ...

all character information is stored in a global data base !

This means there is probably a cell in this database that has you 'home server' listed, this ties in with the rewards for your server ... ak. if home server doesnt equal current server you might not get the rewords that that particular server earned through pvp ...

still, in the latest interview i think it was, they said you could transfer between servers (ak. make another server your 'home world', but to discourage frequent transfers there would be a time restriction in place, ak. switch every month or something similar) ...

then they did mention you can hop servers very easily (from what i understand), ak. visiting another server could well NOT be the same as 'transferring' to another server ...

Thus can be concluded that WvW will just draw from the global database, and assign you to the side of your 'home world' ... if this will run on a seperate server i wouldnt know, i hope so, since that could mean ping troubles might be less, or an equal burden ...

What does Every server is involved in a three-server WvW means?
