So I too am having the "game freezing" problem. I get to play for quite a long time (usually around 3-4 hours but the freezes might be random) and then the game just freezes. After about 2 minutes the application unfreezes and I gain control of my character again. However, this can be annoying when I'm auto-running somewhere, the game freezes, and when it unfreezes I'm running into a wall 3 miles from where I was aiming to run
I noticed a few things happen when the game freezes:
1. My physical memory usage spikes really damn high, nearly to full if not completely full (Normal run usage is about 1.6gb, it spikes to above 3gb and then things get trippy). This could be the cause of the freeze?
2. The CPU usage drops real low, almost to the bottom (Normall GW2 runs at around 70% but it drops to about 4-5% when it freezes)
3. The Windows Event Viewer comes up with these 2 warnings:
1: The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Scenario : The Desktop Window Manager responsiveness has degraded.
OpCode: Video Memory Degredation
Event ID: 500
2: The Desktop Window Manager is experiencing heavy resource contention.
Reason : CPU resources are over-utilized.
Diagnosis : A sharp degradation in Desktop Window Manager responsiveness was observed.
OpCode: Video Memory Responsiveness
Event ID: 501
4: A crash log is indeed created in My Documents\Guild Wars 2\Arenanet.txt (maybe submitting this to ArenaNet will help them?)
As I said, it is uncommon to experience these freezes but when they happen they're really annoying
I am looking to run Memtest when I get a hold of some blank cds as well as run a BIOS update to see if that fixes anything (had a new card and power supply installed around Marchish and I don't remember updating the BIOS for them).
Here are some specs to compare with. I must also mention that it is an ATI card, not Nvidia:
OS: Windows 7 32 bit Home Premium
Motherboard: Asus Rampage Extreme 2
Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66GHz
GFX Card: AMD Radeon HD 6900 Series (6950 I believe? Can't recall off the top of my head)
RAM: 4.096gb (Corsair........something or other)
PSU: 850w
Page File?: 3590MB used, 5879MB available.
Was considering upgrading to 64bit in the near future to get good use out of more ram and the processor. However, some people here are reporting this problem even with 64bit : / Oh and if we're still doing the "same services" thing:
Adobe Flash Player Update Service
Steam Client Service
Thanks, lets hope we get some more feedback on this soon. I'd rather it be a problem on their end than ours as at least our pcs aren't faulty. That said, I have had the exact same issue in BF3 and Diablo 3 in the past 5 days (Once each, I never experienced these before I installed GW2).
UPDATE: So I just installed the most recent AMD profile which supposedly had increased GW2 performance. This thing has made my memory usage go from around 1.6gb to about 2.1gb. What?!

Here are my PC specs:
i7 2600k @ 3.40 GHz
Asus P8P67LE motherboard
2 Radeon HD 6850 in crossfire (12.8 CCC drivers)
60gb SSD and 1TB HDD (GW2 and all PC games boot off the latter)
Ok, here's my problem. When i click the Guild Wars 2 icon, it brings up the login screen and i login in and click play. After that, the screen goes black, and then it flickers a couple times (flickers black, as weird as it sounds). and then it will freeze. and when i say freeze, my ENTIRE PC freezes so that i have to power it down and then power it back up. now, the weird thing is that once i do that and boot windows back up, it will run. it'll still flicker after login and play, but it'll make it to the character screen and i can play, and i won't have any problems while playing. it only does it the first time after powering my PC on.
i participated in a couple beta events and it didn't do it then, and for the first day or two of the early start, it also didn't do it. but now it's doing it, and i don't know why. when it did it earlier today, the GW2 client had to "repair damaged files" or something like that after i launched. but it still froze my computer up later in the day after coming home and turning it back on.
does anyone have any ideas what's wrong? it only does this for Guild Wars 2, other games load up fine. and like i said, it never used to do it for GW2, it just started a couple days ago.
please let me know if you have any ideas.
***edit*** i did notice that it started happening around the time i upgraded to 12.8 drivers, which was a day or two ago. could that be it?
(I didn't realize this was merged with this thread, so I'm re-posting my suggestion here.)
I know you posted this a while ago, but it's one of the first threads that pop up when I search, so I wanted this possible fix to be easily available for others.
Go into CCC, find the monitor attributes, and deselect "Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) or driver defaults"
I was having the same problem, and this is what worked for me.

I was running the Beta graphic drivers (Nvidia) and switched back to the newest ones and still received the errors. I tried the 3GB switch, and received a different error from the game. So I tried to redownload the game and I was receiving the same "Out of Memory" error again. All of this leading me to believe it was coding with the game and the way it interacts with people's computers.
I eventually just did a clean install of a 64 bit operating system. I know not everyone has a 64bit version of Windows, but if you have time and patience you can. Here we go:
Windows 7 Enterprise Trial:
http://technet.micro...r/cc442495.aspx
Windows 8 Release Preview:
http://windows.micro...dows-8/download
There are two different options. One is Windows 7 64bit, the other being Windows 8 64bit. Now I will give a nice little warning to those who decide to go with the Windows 8 Version Preview, its not the full Operating System, some of the things your use to seeing in a Windows OS isn't on this preview, so it does take some time to navigate around and get use to it. The Windows 7 Trial is for 90 days. I didn't try the Windows 7 64bit, I tried it with Windows 8 and the game runs smoothly and I haven't disconnected in 8 hours of straight WvW, when before I couldn't make it longer then 5 minutes.
Windows 8 comes out late October, I think the 26th, and the good news is it will be cheap if the rumors are correct. Some are guessing a 39.99 for those who upgrade from a previous Windows 7/Vista build if you do a direct download, and I think about 70.00 for buying the OS in stores.
Ok, here is a nice guide on how to dual boot your PC so you don't have to wipe everything on your HD to try this solution out:
http://www.pcmag.com...,2408280,00.asp
The steps for a Vista upgrade should be roughly the same, but I'd recommend finding a guide if your not tech savy. Hope this helps others and remember this is try at your own risk, make sure you back all your data up incase something goes wrong.
Good Luck and see you on the field!

I was having this problem also with guild wars 2. I have a
dell xps quad core i7 2.1ghz
nvidia geforce gt540m
4 x 2 gb ram
The game used to crash every 5-10 minutes for me. I found that I cound reduce the crash frequency to between every 1-3 hrs by turning off shadows and reflections (everything else set to medium). Limiting frame rates to 30 also seemed to help a bit (but this part is unconfirmed).
However I was worried that even by crashing every 1-3 hours my computer would get damaged, so now I have set guild wars 2 to run on integrated chips instead. I get a reasonable fps at medium setting (30-35) and can play without crashing.
Sometimes though I get this problem where my frame rate randomly drops to 9 fps (usually when there is a massive event going on) but this only occurs every 20 minutes and goes away after 10 seconds or so (i can handle it for pve and wvw but probably not for spvp haha). Again, I can reduce the frequency by limiting fps to 30.
I hope my solution helps some people (at least temporarily until arenanet solves this)

I was about to chuck my game over the hill I live on (and possibly my PC along with it if necessary).
My system is a somewhat older HP Pavillion Elite multi-media PC m9250f (Intel Core 2 Quad 6700), 4 GB of ram, with Windows 7 64-bit installed and with an after-market Visiontek ATI Radeon 4890OC 1GB video card installed along with a good strong after-market power supply to support it.
I own and play hundreds of games and none of them have given me these problems I have experienced with GW2.
I was playing all around with the overclock settings on the video card; tried underclocking; tried cleaning and optimizing and defragging my hard drives, tried turning off all non-windows required services, looked at IRQ's and memory settings for all my periferals and driver (including on-board Realtek HD sound), tried running perfmon to look at memory counters... tried pretty much everything before I chucked my stuff over the hill.
The change that finally fixed my problems for me was memory-related.... but not memory.
I have two hard drives, and both were quite full.
I also had Windows 7 (64) set to auto-manage my page file size(s).
Because windows was managing the page-files and I didn't have a lot of hard drive space free, it was booting up with a small page-file size.
Please check your page-file settings and be sure that you allocate a lot. Even with a 4GB page-file on one of my hard drives, I was experiencing the problems, but once I released some disk space, defragged everyting, then bumped up my page files manually to 1.5 x my ram (6,142 MB for me) I am no longer experiencing the crashes.
Hope this may help someone as I have read most of these forum threads and I have not seen much mention of page-file size or checking that windows is properly handling the memory. It worked for me!

thank you for your response, i'm just now seeing it. unfortunately, i don't have that option in my CCC.

i don't know what Vision Engine is, and mine does not use a VGA analog connection. is there another way for me to do this?
