Am I doing something wrong?  I'm level 11 human and the skill trainer wants 10 silver for a training manual.  I have trait points to use but it says I need skill training first.  I've been around and done fighting, crafting,  mining, etc. I haven't been twiddling my thumbs but where is this money to come from?  The most I've had at one time was 6 silver.

Make sure to consume those bags that you'd get as drops from time to time which give you stuff like jute and coins. Sell the items you don't need at merchants, sell junk, finish all the hearts, take the rewards from your mail. I managed to make 31 silver this way :D after buying the basic manual :P. Now I crossed lvl 20 so gonna buy the next manual later when am home and hit the beautiful land of Tyria.

Also try not to buy gear from merchants, rather use karma after finishing hearts so you can use karma points instead of spending coins. And most of the drops have better stats compared to what you'd buy anyway :D
Lower level quests reward you like 50-90 copper. After lvl 12 or so, you start getting around 1silver per quest. So doing a little higher level hearts would as well help you in stocking up funds.

I pick up everything.  I did leather working so I could make bags with 8 slots, so I could pick up more stuff.  I haven't bought anything from vendors except for gathering tools and some lumps of tin for crafting.  I make my own armor and weapons (leather and huntsman).  I've been wanting to sell some of it but the trading post is down.  I did go to a few more difficult maps but I got killed pretty quick.

Yeah, with the Trading Post down, it is hard to save up the gold for the more expensive purchases.  We can only hope they get it up in the next day or two, or people are going to be stuck and complaining.

Not sure what you're doing different, but by the time I had to buy a manual I had almost 30 silver (28 IIRC).

Try asking for someone's help to go to those areas. GW community is the best in my opinion and experience. They may not help you win but would definitely help you at all. You may ask if anyone cleared those areas and if not would they mind going with you. And most of the hearts/DE's always have groups doing them all the time. Just don't hesitate to ask for help, you'd get it eventually. Also try out lower level maps to get hang of the skills and once mastered you can try to solo higher levels although you might get owned with a weaker strategy.

Are you picking up the money which come from each letter which is sent to you after you complete a heart? Many people don't notice it, but at the end of the day you received quite a lot of money that way...
That said, when I reached lvl11 I had to spend ALL my money on the manual. And I think that's a good thing: finally a game which challenges you in some ways...

When I reached 10, I had enough money for the manual and quite a bit of spare.
Maybe do more events? I try to join every event I see and they give pretty good money.
Also, pick up money from mail you get for completed hearts, if you haven't.

I'm sitting at level 23 right now with ~45silver and I'm also lvl 75ws/75as which was not cheap to level. As long as most of your leveling is coming from hearts/events you should have no problem making cash

I'm not sure what you are doing wrong, I had around 10 silver when I got level 11.
Map completion and daily achievements also give quite a bit of money. Or maybe you didn't see that the letters from the heart events have money in them?
If you need to get some money, world vs world isn't bad if lots of combat is going on.

In my honest opinion, it is a little expensive BUT arenanet shouldn't change anything for first 2 tier.

Otherwise you can expect a large backlash from players who have paid that amount for those first 2 tiers itself.

However the final tier can be considered to be lowered down as I think not many players have reached that level.

Unless arenanet is prepared to do compensation for those who already paid if not, it would be chaos.

well thank you all for responding, and I'm so glad you did.  Turns out that I did not notice the little copper coins at the bottom of my letters (really ANet, brown on brown?) So yes, that was a nice little windfall when I went and opened all my mails again.  I got the skill book and now I'm doing much better.  Thanks again.
