An interesting feat has been made by a player that goes by the name Surfeuze. Taking advantage of crafting XP, the guy was able to get to 80 in only the first 18 hours.

Naturally, this comes as a bit of a shock, considering the game hasn't even officially launched yet lol.

This isn't WoW. So now that player's just missed most of the game.

I'm not concerned - there's always somebody who zergs in every game. The rest of us can just keep on enjoying it; and maybe if this person is wise, they'll make a new character and play the fuller game this time.

pretty cool if you just want to do WvW, saves time on getting to the ass-kicking. Not so great for the rest of the game, but different strokes for different folks i guess

How is this cause for concern?

He'll be downleveled to whatever everyone is - in PvP or PvE - until everyone else is level 80 too.

AND he can't buy anything without Karma Points.

I'm not concerned whatsoever, I'm aware of his now ever present deficits. However what astounded me was his tactic used to take him to level 80. It was quite unconventional.

You aren't downleveled in pvp. Why would he be in a lv11 zone if hes doing lv80 things.

actually, game mechanics make it so he can go play the rest of the game now and still have fun, while making it quite a bit easier.

The main bonus is the WvW pwng he will now commence. probably need to make crafting lvling a bit more inconvenient than it is currently..

This jerk just ruined craft exp. Nerf incoming. "We are working to fix this as I type," he says at the end of the article... this is why the whole 'level any way you want' will never work. Someone always finds a way to abuse it.

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS!

If he skipped all the "Hearts" he can't buy any of the vendor sets/items... he'd have to go back and unlock all those things.

Apparently, he leveled up doing nothing but Crafting.

(Not saying he would want all of them - just saying if he did he'd have to go back and get Karma)

Well there are a few things they could do to resolve this without ripping out xp completely from crafting. One, disable exp boosters on crafting xp, two, lessen the xp gained (obviously), three, cap the daily xp that can possibly be gained in a single hour or two.

I think the issue is if what he did could constitute exploiting an overlooked feature.

From Joystiq:
[Update: ArenaNet's Mike O'Brien spoke on Reddit to say that this person's level 80 achievement was done by "unusual ways to level very fast" and "We're fixing these issues as I type."]

"Unusual" can be meant as unintended. Generally, taking advantage of something like this in other games constitutes exploit abuse. Levels may not be as big an issue with GW2 as other games, but this still feels like circumventing the system for a large gain. I am really interested on how Anet will deal with this.

Yes, but karma can be gained anywhere.

Personally, I don't think it's fair to punish someone who was given the option to level through crafting. XP was obviously intended to be given as a reward for crafting. They had to have known someone would eventually go all out and craft like crazy.

The fun thing about guild wars 2 is that he didn't even necessarily miss anything, since you get scaled down wherever you go. So the level doesn't matter much.

This is absolutely not shocking at all.

Besides the fact that many predicted the first 80 would come before the headstart period finished, from a few posts above it sounds like this person used a bit of an exploit anyway.

I am only shocked that it took nearly 3 days.  Where's the dedication, you zerg-levelers!?!  :)

Edit:  Also, from the article, it sounds like he used an entire guild to help him level.  Now that's the sort of insane dedication I was talking about!  :)

props to the guy. it was an amazing feat. i projected myself reaching level 80 in 3/4-1 year by playing casually. and he did it in less than a day.

I don't mind exp through crafting, but i have a strong hunch how this was done and its more going on that you think.

It can't be crafting you have to go to high lvl area's to get materials. Just cant be done that fast.

Even with friends helping it not going to happen

This is the first time I've ever seen a guild cause a major player nerf before a game even launched.  That's so awesome.

It was earlier stated by arenanet that you could reach lvl 80 by doing nothing but crafting. It's not really surprising the first lvl 80 did it this way. I'm still amazed it was achieved already though, how did he get the highest tier crafting mats?

It would've been easier just repeating certain easy events (that spawn non stop over and over restarting instantly by talking to an npc)

I thought Anet set up crafting XP like that intentionally.

Well with an entire guild at your disposal, do you really have to struggle to get those mats? How hard can it be to slip into the high level areas and sneak past high level mobs to get the good stuff.

Wonder if he'll be banned or not? Depends whether anet mean it was unusual as in it was an exploit (bannable for using) or jus unprecendented xp gain?

Yea I'm not really sure why this is important. I would hardly call it clever either, surely its the complete opposite, at least as far as I'm concerned.

Guild Wars 2 isn't WoW, that player has just missed out on the game he purchased. I'm sure he gave himself a big pat on the back for it too.

It was done by farming events with very low respawn time. you can just stand there and use a g15 makro for autoattacking. every 2-5 mins spawns a veteran which gives then 2k exp. 20-30 people just standing there and pressing g15 autoattack veteran down in 10 secs. you can go to sleep or whatever you want to and level till 80 in few hours.
there are a few spots for that. hope guru will do a news about that, because this is bullshit for anyone doing it the long and fair way.

Yes except he didn't miss out at all. He almost has maximum advantage in WvW and he can revisit any lower level zones anytime he pleases.

Stress tests and beta weekends. They planned out where they were going to find the mats.
