5/17/2014 Profile updated in OP on Pinnacle forums, new functionality added.

Yes, with a controller.

Stay with me here.

I have been perfecting my profile since beta weekend 2 and am excited to say that it works flawlessly.  You can now play Guild Wars 2 as a third person action game, and honestly, it feels like it was designed to be played this way.

Yes, you can easily cast ground targeted spells.  Yes, all of the controls fit on the controller.  Yes, the ease of movement, casting, and attacking trumps anything you can do with a keyboard and mouse.  Yes, it feels a bit like cheating.

As a note, this profile was created to replace the keyboard and mouse for combat only.  Let's not be naive, the keyboard and mouse is still the way to go for menu navigation, inventory, etc, but for minute to minute gameplay you will never need to touch the keyboard and mouse.

See all my notes and grab my profile right here:

Enjoy!

Thanks for this. I made some mock controller key mappings a little while ago.

The game could definitely be played on a controller, although some classes would be better suited for it than others.

Now I just need to fork over the $30 for a gamepad to try this.

This won't work well for target selection or inventory sorting.  It's probably superior for movement.

I don't get why everyone is so against this. Its existence isn't making YOU play with a controller, so chillax. Those who want to play with one will, and those who don't won't. Don't be kids about it.

Targeting actually works really well.  GW2 is pretty smart about figuring out which target I'm trying to choose.

Thank you for this.

I've been working on my controller settings since the beta's/headstart and just can't seem to get it how I want it. (I've been using a PS2 controller and XPadder myself). This will give me more of an idea of what to do. I've been only using the left half of the controller (left hand) and the mouse with my right.  Eh. I'll get it figured out one day.

Yes for controllers, I did a profile similar to yours (which I'll copy right now) and it is fun to use in dungeons, jumping puzzles and the sort ^^

You can use a PS3 controller with Pinnacle, but it requires a bit more work than a plug and play 360 controller.  Download the trial and try it out.

I thought 3rd party programs were against the EULA? Something about if it enhances gameplay and is "UNFAIR" to other gamers then it's a bannable offense? Being able to quickly press buttons on a controller is definitely unfair to those of us who play with the keyboard.

A few months back, they confirmed that GW2 was being developed for console.

I don't mind more players in this game. But you're welcome to tell ANet that they're doing the right thing or wasting their time.

For kicks and giggles use a controller and a touch screen or hand gesture interface ;).

I will probably never understand why anyone in their right mind would prefer a controller over a keyboard + mouse... as someone continually aggravated at console shooters and other console games that would be vastly improved with keyboard + mouse...

It's a matter of comfort.  To me, reclining comfortably at my desk is preferable to being hunched over my keyboard and mouse.

Mouse and keyboard are superior for third person action games, for example, mass effect.

Guild Wars 2 is the same :).

Using a controller in Guild Wars 2 gives a noticeable performance upgrade in terms of mobility, which in this game is a huge advantage.

In terms of PvP, a player using a controller will have their ass handed to them by those using a keyboard and mouse.

Based on what?  This isn't Call of Duty, lightning quick mouse reaction time doesn't mean much in an MMO.

Have you played any sPvP? I wish I had the video to show you where a player was dodging an engineer's flamethrower attack, it was so fast it'd be impossible to see without slow motion.

"an MMO" you realize MMO is not a playstyle genre? Planetside 2 is an MMO, it's also an FPS.

Sure, if you're leisurely playing PvE, who cares. But it's not for performance.

Nice one!

Ignore all these go back to consoles you are not worthy of the pc master race posts...........

I got a gaming rig just for gw2 and I was a console gamer before and what would be awesome is to lay down in bed
with a controller and do some wvwvw or whatever just empty your inventory and turn auto loot on.

as for placing AOE's it is really easy and I have not even tried even then my ranger only has 1 aoe attack and anet is looking into a console port anyways so unless they include a mouse with every copy for the xbox/ps3 it cant be that hard to do.

Thx, I have a friend that recently has had trouble with his hand and physically cant use keyboard and mouse, more specifically mouse. His hand will cramp up and he wont be able to move it. He was a huge PC gamer, and this has been a major setback for him. He played a ton of LoL which he cant play now, and was looking forward to GW2. But because of his problem, he wouldn't be able to play it. This will help him alot.

My only objection to this is Pinnacle, but if it works for you, great. I'll do everything with free software instead.

Wow....Once again let down by the GW2 community. This in no way hurts people who don't want to use it OP obviously put some work into this for no personal gain offers it for nothing in return and gets trash talked?

I don't care about you super leet people who dont want someone "Dragging your group down" This isn't WoW.....there arn't 100 different situational skills to manage at 1 time. If someone is going to drag your group down they will do it even if they arn't using a controller. I use half controller half naga mouse and I'd say I'm above average. Played that way in Tera and did fine in pvp there.

Okay...done venting...on topic Thank you OP Some of us really appreciate this. My hands start to hurt if I play too much on m/k so this will help extend my play sessions :D

This looks like fun. I will try it out at least to see if what people are saying is true. Right now I am actually using a track ball mouse because my wrist would get fatigued from a traditional mouse. I played click to move and GW1 and found GW2 controls really clunky at first in terms of controlling my camera and movement at the same time. I'm still getting the hang of ground targeting while strafing every which way. I think a console controller might be quite a bit of fun and I'll compare how well I think I perform versus the mouse and keyboard.

My one concern is that the you will have to take your thumb off of the left joy stick to press the left d-pad which will interrupt your movement when using your profession mechanics. I went through a lot of trouble setting up my keyboard keys so I can hit every skill and swap targets while strafing in any direction. Took me a while to find what I was happy with.

"Play Guild Wars 2 as it's meant to be played, with a controller."

I don't think everyone who reads the title is going to understand the reference or the irony, hence the philosophical objections being raised in this thread.

My Two Gems: If anyone prefers to use a controller to play the game, more power to 'em. Creativity and conformity are ever at odds or, as another famous tagline goes: Think Different.™

Now, if someone wants a real challenge, how about setting things up so I can play GW2 on my Droid? ^_^
