I'm currently level 25 and I have been finding some powerfull weapons, the problem is that I see people that are my level running around with cool looking weapons compared to mine (for example, my greatsword looks like a toothpick compared to some i've seen). I've been completing jumping puzzles and I keep searching for hidden areas, but the loot in all these places just look the same and are plain boring

Chances are that you're seeing people using gear from the Hall of Monuments (HoM) system.  Basically by reaching a lot of achievement land marks in GW1, people get extra graphically skin options for their gear.  Also they get expanded Ranger pet choices.

From my experience, you won't see any badass looking weapons until you're much higher level or you have access to the HoM rewards.

HOM, personal story, WvW karma weapons, Renown Heart karma weapons... there are a bunch of options.

Noet that the karma vendor in WvW can be reached in one hop and has 'savage' style weapons.

You can buy very good looking two-handed sword from karma vendor in Snowden Drifts

Check out karma vendors, they often have items with unique skins.
