====================================================================================
The purpose of this post is to provide some general knowledge to the public concerning the mystic forge and crafting PvP gear. While I certainly don't claim to know everything, I've come to notice many people in game are completely clueless :huh:
====================================================================================

General References

For a list of known recipes check greyf0x's post:
http://www.guildwars...armour-recipes/
It is a work in progress and we need everyone to
contribute until it's complete. This will help a lot of people!

What is the Mystic Forge?

You can find the Mystic Forge near the Tournament Master in the Heart of the Mists.
The Mystic Forge let's you combine multiple materials and tokens into a PvP item.

In order to craft an item at the Mystic Forge you will need the following

1.) A Rank Token (Rabbit, Deer, Tiger, Free Tournament etc..)
These items determine the range of graphical tiers your item
can fall under.

2.) An Item Token (Sword, Greatsword, Light Helm, Heavy Glove etc..)
These items dictate what type of item you will receive.

3.) An Arcane Fragment (Arcane Orb, Arcane Crystal and Arcane Sliver)
These items decide exactly which tier in the range (decided by your rank token)
that you will receive! (Not 100% guaranteed to receive a particular tier)

4.) Arcane Powder
A necessary reagent for crafting PvP items.

What to expect when you craft an item

The item you receive is based on the materials you decide to use. Your Item Token will completely dictate which "type" of item you get. Meaning, a Sword token will yield a Sword and a Light Helm token will yield a Light Helm. Which Sword or Light Helm depends on the other reagents.

Firstly, the Rank Token will place your item within a specified range of "item tier"

Second, the Arcane Fragment you use will determine which item tier you actually receive. To better illustrate this I'll use an example:

I want to create the item PvP Seer's Mask which is a Light Helm. "Seer's" is the graphic tier I'm aiming for here. I know from previous experience that using a Free Tournament Token has given me a "Seer's" item. Therefore that item must fall into the possible graphic tiers for that rank token.

So I buy a Light Helm Token. Now I take my Light Helm Token and Free Tournament Token to the Mystic Forge. After entering both items, I also add Arcane Powder which is always necessary. Now I have the choice of entering an Arcane Orb, Arcane Crystal or Arcane Sliver.

Now, the best way to look at this is to picture 3 possible outcomes for your item. Arcane Orb being likely to produce the "worst" result, Arcane Crystal being the second best and Arcane Sliver being the best! It's not exactly this cut and dry though. If you've gotten an item with an Arcane Orb for a set that you want to complete, continue using orb's with different item tokens until you've completed it! When using Arcane Crystal there is also a chance that you will receive the same item as produced by an Arcane Sliver which again could be good or bad depending on what item you're going for. In my experience I've seen this "lucky" reward about 10% of the time using crystal's.

Here are some numbers via greyf0x's post:
Orb = 80% chance of common, 20% chance of uncommon
Crystal = 80% uncommon, 20% rare.
Sliver = 80% rare, 20% exotic
These numbers are not proven but seem to be very likely

So, back to my PvP Seer's Mask! The three Light Armor tiers for a Free Tournament Token are "Rubric" "Seer's" and "Armageddon" respectively. Where an Orb is likely to give you a Rubric item here, a crystal often makes Seer's and a sliver resulting in an Armageddon piece. So I load my Light Helm Token, Free Tournament Token, Arcane Powder and Arcane Crystal into the Mystic Forge and hit create. After a few seconds of magic I receive PvP Seer's Mask! (as long as I'm not too lucky, otherwise I'd get bumped up to an Armageddon helm :P ).

Copper, Silver and Gold rank chests! (Quality over quantity!)

A lot of people are wondering what the difference between these items is and if it's worth it to spend 1000 glory on a Gold chest just to receive the same items as spending 200 on a copper chest. The short answer is, yes, it's worth it!

While you may receive the same exact items from a 200 glory point chest that you get from a 1000 glory point chest, the difference is in the materials that you can salvage from your rewards!

Salvaging items from a copper chest will not give you as good of crafting materials as if you had salvaged the same exact items from a gold chest.

What I mean by "good" crafting materials is that copper chest items will often salvage into Arcane Powder and very very rarely result in Arcane Crystal or Arcane Sliver, but salvaging items from a Gold chest will often reward these materials.

Now when it comes to the actual items inside the chest, you may also want to keep them. That's cool too! These items are simliar to crafted items in that they have a graphic tier range that's determined by the rank they're associated with. So "Rabbit" chests (no matter which color) give certain graphic tiers, while "Deer" chests (of any color!) give items of a higher graphic tier, cool !!!

====================================================================================
That's all I can think of for the time being. I've been trying to communicate a lot of this information via /map lately and I figured it'd be better of permanently posted somewhere.
If you guys have any corrections for me please contribute! This crafting system is still very new and we're all still trying to figure it out. Thanks !!!

Great post! It explains the system far better than my brief introduction. Hopefully this will help newer players understand the system better.

Also, would you mind if I use some of your text to update the wiki? It needs some love when it comes to the PvP sections :)

Thank you! I probably need to go back through and edit it a bit but I was feeling too lazy xP

Feel free to take whatever you'd like, I'd be glad to help contribute to the community. Also your Mystic Forge post helped me a bit too !

Hm that's interesting. I'm rank 12 atm and I've bought about 8 or 9 gold chests. In total I've gotten 5 crystals and 2 slivers

These numbers are not proven but seem to be very likely

I just reread the post, and would like to make a clarification. The quote above was a wild speculation on my part. I actually don't think there is a chance to get lower quality gear (at least in my tests I haven't seen it at all).

I think the numbers are more likely something like this:
Orb = 80% chance of common, 20% chance of uncommon
Crystal = 80% uncommon, 20% rare.
Sliver = 80% rare, 20% exotic

I'm not sure about slivers, it seems like there are some skins which are being created which don't match any other sets, so it could be that slivers have a chance to create two unique appearances per tier. Just speculation at this point though.

I'll amend this as it seems to agree with what I've found over time as well

While you may receive the same exact items from a 200 glory point chest that you get from a 1000 glory point chest, the difference is in the materials that you can salvage from your rewards!

Salvaging items from a copper chest will not give you as good of crafting materials as if you had salvaged the same exact items from a gold chest.

What I mean by "good" crafting materials is that copper chest items will often salvage into Arcane Powder and very very rarely result in Arcane Crystal or Arcane Sliver, but salvaging items from a Gold chest will often reward these materials.

That may be. A lot of this still remains to be seen as time goes by. On the other hand, while you may be having bad luck getting slivers from your gold chests, I wouldn't say that necessarily means the chests weren't formatted in this way. For instance, I still don't think you'd have had any better luck, or any hope at all  with a copper or silver chest.

actually I think u can get slivers only from Rare items/crystals from Fine items  (no matter what chest it came from, same % chance when salvaging) but cuz u have better chance of getting Rare items from gold chest u theoretically have better chance of getting slivers from gold chest ...

in my case, I'm just unlucky ... as usual :)

Good point, sounds likely! I'll have to pay more attention to which items in particular I'm salvaging from now on

Oh man, that write-up is really helpful - I was wondering why I never got anything but arcane orbs in salvaging, and I guess it's because I've been buying mostly copper and silver chests lately, while keeping most of my gold rewards in storage.

I've barely touched sPVP recently, but this might give me the impetus to dive back in!

What i'd like to know:
How "rare" are the free tournament tokens, compared to rabbit/deer/... ?

For example, if i want to craft the rarest possible item, using arcane sliver - should i use a free tournament token? or is a dolyak token "worth" more?
I mean, it's pretty obvious, that a dolyak token should get you a higher chance of receiving a rare/exotic item than a deer or even rabbit token. But idk where to put the Free tournament tokens into that ascending order.

Anyone knows? :)

They go into your PvP locker which is found in the heart of the mists. They're to the right of the stairs that lead up to the pvp gear vendors

The items you get using each token are just different, not necessarily "more rare". Free tournament tokens come from salvaging items that you get from free tournament chest, and they've been known to appear once in a while after salvaging items from other chests too. Basically you should find out which token + sliver combination leads to the set you actually want to wear, and then work on accumulating those tokens.

So to reiterate, dolyak tokens don't really mean more rare, just different items than free tournament

I've ~14 dust, ~14 orbs and 1 arcane crystal from like 30 gold level salvages. Pretty sure the OP is straight wrong.

The thing about this is, gold chests have a higher chance at giving you an exotic item straight out of the chest, and in turn those exotic items have a higher chance of salvaging into something more useful. So after all is said an done a gold chest has the highest chance of giving you a rare item which will then salvage into a rare material.

With that being said, silver chests also have a chance at giving you items which can salvage into the more useful materials. Exactly what those numbers are still remains to be seen. If you're buying silver chests and getting lucky with rare items then that's good. It may very well be worth it to spam silver chests if over the course of 100 opens they have the highest efficiency of glory spent to rare item received.

I can confirm that slivers only have a chance of spawning from RARE PVP items, this is from personal experience AND it's stated on the GW2 Wiki. So if you're looking for slivers, buy gold chests.

Quoted from the GW wiki:
Arcane Slivers are PvP crafting materials and represent the rarest of the three arcane tokens. They are used in recipes at the Mystic Forge to create new PvP rewards. As they are rare they will generally create the most visually impressive items of a specific rank. They have chance to be salvaged when using a PvP Salvage Kit on rare PvP weapons and armor found in gold reward chests.

That's certainly been my experience too, however, there have been numerous reports from people getting high yields of both crystals and slivers from Bronze chests. Personally that's not my experience, perhaps it'srelated to a bug, it may be luck, or it may be people providing inaccurate reports. Still, I'm not confident enough to say 100% that gold reward chests are the only way to get slivers.

I would also be wary of quoting the wiki as proof. In this case, I wrote the paragraph you reference (along with many other PvP related wiki pages),  as with all wiki entries it represents players' current understanding of the game systems, not an official explanation from ArenaNet. As such, it's not always 100% accurate.

Finally, my salvages lately have been giving me a LOT of dust, and even fewer Crystals and Orbs than I'm used to (I'm still only buying gold chests). Maybe it's bad luck on my account, or maybe drop rates have been altered.

I wish Anet just made it so that you unlock tiers with X amount of glory. I mean, this is so unnecessary and I feel bad for people who don't use forums/reddit and other sources to easily find the recipees that they need. I'll probably stick with default gear as this is too much hassle and everyone looks red or blue any way xD
