Here are my PC specs:

i7 2600k @ 3.40 GHz
Asus P8P67LE motherboard
2 Radeon HD 6850 in crossfire (12.8 CCC drivers)
60gb SSD and 1TB HDD (GW2 and all PC games boot off the latter)

Ok, here's my problem. When i click the Guild Wars 2 icon, it brings up the login screen and i login in and click play. After that, the screen goes black, and then it flickers a couple times (flickers black, as weird as it sounds). and then it will freeze. and when i say freeze, my ENTIRE PC freezes so that i have to power it down and then power it back up. now, the weird thing is that once i do that and boot windows back up, it will run. it'll still flicker after login and play, but it'll make it to the character screen and i can play, and i won't have any problems while playing. it only does it the first time after powering my PC on.

i participated in a couple beta events and it didn't do it then, and for the first day or two of the early start, it also didn't do it. but now it's doing it, and i don't know why. when it did it earlier today, the GW2 client had to "repair damaged files" or something like that after i launched. but it still froze my computer up later in the day after coming home and turning it back on.

does anyone have any ideas what's wrong? it only does this for Guild Wars 2, other games load up fine. and like i said, it never used to do it for GW2, it just started a couple days ago.

please let me know if you have any ideas.

***edit*** i did notice that it started happening around the time i upgraded to 12.8 drivers, which was a day or two ago. could that be it?

I know you posted this a while ago, but it's one of the first threads that pop up when I search, so I wanted this possible fix to be easily available for others.

Go into CCC, find the monitor attributes, and deselect "Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID) or driver defaults"

I was having the same problem, and this is what worked for me.

I suspect it has something to do with the 12.8 drivers, CFX and GW2. I say this as I'm having the exact same issue - When I first play the game, the game will load in and let me play, but a few minutes later the screen and everything locks up - at this point the cursor may or may not respond to mouse movements, but ctrl-alt-tab, alt-tab, alt-f4 does nothing and my only option is to reboot the whole computer. It doesn't do this everytime, but when it does - it's always the first time I play GW2 on the first bootup in a day. I seem to avoid this if I alt-tab out of the game and then go back into it - doing this in games is known to sort issues out with crossfire if it's not working correctly (it's also known to break crossfire... and breaking crossfire might be whats preventing the crash/hangup)... which is why I suspect the crossfire settings/drivers in 12.8 with GW2 are messed up.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-890FXA-UD5
Video: 2x Radeon HD5870 1GB (in Crossfire)
Drivers: 12.8 w/ 12.8 CAP 2 application profiles
HDD: 2x 1GB 7200 HDD (non-SSD)

In regards to the above post, "Use Extended Display Identification Data (EDID)" is already disabled for me. And I also only started getting these problems after installing 12.8 - but I also get better fps with 12.8... so it's either deal with having to reboot computer now and again or worse fps in-game. blah @ AMD/ATI. lol. Oh, and 12.8 also broke firefox.. good work there

Started having the same issues. It might be the 12.8 drivers, but I played for a few weeks after them fine. Suddenly one day, it started doing this out of nothing.

I just disabled crossfire for now, but it's a huge annoyance.

I got 2 Radeon HD6950s 1GB in crossfire

Try driver version 11.12 it's what I run on my 6970 with no issues.
EDIT or no mater I just seen the xfire.

Thanx for reminding me about this thread. I've upgraded to 12.9 beta drivers with 12.9 cap 1 profiles, and so far haven't had a single problem with this weird crashing with crossfire enabled. I also had no problems with crashing using 12.8 drivers with crossfire disabled. So I can say that my particular computer lockup when playing GW2 was apparently indeed caused by 12.8 drivers with crossfire enabled.

So if anyone is having anything like what's being described in this thread and using a AMD/ATI video card, I'd recommend trying the 12.9 beta drivers and the 12.9 cap 1 application profiles.
