So I've been having trouble deciding on a race for my Necromancer.  I've narrowed it down to either Sylvari or Necromancer and I'm curious about your opinions.  I don't particularly care about the racial skills.  Which do you think makes a better Necromancer (lore-wise and, more importantly, aesthetically)?

Lore-wise i would go for asura , but that maybe me , while sylvari can really fit any profession , since they are born from the dream and all that stuff , i still find that the asura fit the role better , the necromancer in the guild wars 2 web site is an asura is it not?

Now for the looks is a hard choice , i think asura look awesome , even their animations look very cool , but the asura are really small , thus making you have problem if you like to "showoff" , cause well , it is hard to really see how awesome is you legendary small gear.

Only my 2c.

It's really a matter of personal preference and I don't believe anybody is able to give you a conclusive answer. There was another recent thread here about it, and responses were probably biased towards Asura. It appears you're going for aesthetics and that's a good choice unless considering to RP. Have you tried going through character customisation to see which is a better fit for the look you want?

I'm very new to GW in general (ie. only played GW1 for little over 2 months before heading over to GW2) so I couldn't tell you much about lore. In GW1 there was a prominent Asuran necromancer named Gadd (a character still mentioned in GW2 in at least one context I know of, and found out after getting stuck into the game). The Asurans are also natural scholars and therefore well suited to these sorts of professions. Without adding further spoilers, another statement has been made within the game itself about necromancy going well with golemancy.

Again, we're talking technicalities when the appearance would be more important to you. Go with what you like. I went with Asura, finding them a better fit for the necro, and got a Sylvari ranger (quite predictably). I agree with the post above that the small size of the Asura is a bit of a hindrance to those looking to strut their stuff. But seriously, is it important for you to look so prominent?

Don't know much about lore, but I can't stand the super short classes like Asura. I went with a sylvari necro and its been pretty good so far. Not ridiculously big to make puzzles hard, but not too small so that I can barely see good looking gear (after all, the progression in this game is primarily cosmetic). Sylvari with the black/charcoal coloured... skin? Dunno what they have, but I think it looks cool and fits in with the necro theme.

I went with a bright pink Sylvari Necromancer, but then my intent for the character was to go against the stereotypical dark brooding necromancer. She's pink and focuses on charm responses, and if I could name her flesh golem his name would be Churchill. Basically I'm just saying go with what you think feels right for a necromancer, no matter what that means. If you really wanna count votes, I vote Sylvari.
