There have been many posts on various forums about different connection issues and hopefully this will help. Long story short, after days of trying different troubleshooting techniques to fix my problem it seemed that perhaps ATT Uverse may be at fault. Sure enough, after some searching an extremely simple solution was found that remedied the issue. Assuming you have a 2Wire Modem then follow these steps:

Browse to 192.168.1.254
Click on the Home Network button at the top of the page
In the gray bar across the top, click on Wireless Settings
Enter your password for the device
Under Additional Settings defaults are recommended
Change the Wireless Mode to: 802.11b
Click the Save button
Once complete, retry the connection
Click on the Home Network button at the top of the page
In the gray bar across the top, click on Wireless Settings
Enter your password for the device
Under Additional Settings defaults are recommended
Change the Wireless Mode to: 802.11b
Click the Save button
Once complete, retry the connection
