I'm looking for advice on what I should upgrade in order to improve the performance I'm currently getting in Guild Wars 2.

I'm getting roughly 20-50 fps depending on what area I'm in and how many players there are. Let me say that anything above 40 fps is rare for me currently, but I am running on medium/high settings.

The biggest problem I'm having involves WvWvW in which I get frame rates below 15 making it almost unplayable.

Here are my specs:
RAM: 4 GB
Processor: AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core Processor 2.3 GHz
GPU: Radeon HD 6850

My first guess would be that my processor needs the upgrade the most, but I'm not 100% sure. Any help would be appreciated along with estimates on what kind of increase in fps I could see with said upgrades. Thanks!

You'll want to upgrade the processor. I have a GTX 480 and an Athlon II 630 (also a Phenom II 970). Running the Athlon II nets me about 33 fps on average, while the Phenom II gets me about 50+. Your processor is the bottleneck similar to the Athlon II in my case. I'm running the Athlon II because my machine/motherboard can't handle the heat/power consumption of the Phenom II. You'll likely find you'll have to get both a motherboard and processor, not just the processor. Your best bet is on grabbing an Intel quad and inexpensive motherboard at this point, though an i3 3220 would probably do well enough.

Yeah, that's what I thought was the case. Shame I'll need to get a new motherboard. I was looking at getting this:

Any ideas on what motherboard would pair well? Or if a different processor would be a better choice?

That looks like a good deal CBuZz, I'll definitely look into that bundle.

Don't even consider getting another AMD cpu at this point. They are weak & basically crap. It's hard for me to say that being an AMD fanboy but it's the truth.

Re-use your current GPU & you've got yourself a strong very capable GW2 unit. Also, with the 2500K you can overclock the crap out of it for extra win.

yeah +1 2 the 2500k. just get the cheapest intel quad you can overclock to around 4.5ghz. you willl need an aftermarket cooler.

my choice of mobo would be either asus/gigabyte. could suggest you one if you want...set a budget for cpu+mobo. most likely you will need ram as well.

p.s at this stage look at replacing other things like case etc if you rig is getting on a bit....as you are going to be rebuilding as it is.

Yeah dont get an AMD cpu, I only pull a solid 60+ fps at 2560x1440 with supersample and SMAA enabled on my dual 6870's, its almost unplayable....

and before somebody asks...

AMD [email protected](on air, xigmatek Aegir+120x38 PWM panaflow)
Asus Sabertooth 990fx
Kingston HyperX Genisis 4x4gb(16gb total@1680mhz 9-9-9-27 cr1)
Sapphire 6870 1gb@xfx black edition bios
Powercolor 6870 1gb @ xfx black edition bios

it sucks, my 3dmark scores are pathetic.
