Is it viable? I think a strategy similar to smoke ganks could be interesting and fun to watch. It's on a pretty short cooldown, as well.

IMO the main strength of stealth is target breaking, which means multiple short stealths is far better than one long stealth. Mass Invisibility's long cast time doesn't do it any favours either as you can't really use it reactively for yourself, much less for your allies.
Overall I'd say MI is a weaker group support Elite than even Moa Morph.
That said, MI is the only Mesmer Elite I ever use; as the other Elites have long CDs and I don't like feeling I have to "save" a skill for an opportune moment. MI's un-Eliteness and short CD means I can use it like an Utility skill.
