As the game has been out for almost two weeks now, I've started to consider the monthly achievement more and more. I think that the daily and monthly achievements are a good add to the game and the idea of completing them is good. However, I do question the actual content that is required for you to get the achievement.

Let's start from the best part: monthly event participation. To me this seems completely rational. Completing 100 events is doable for anyone in a month. The same goes for monthly WvW kills as the kills are rather easy to get and you can use multiple characters to achieve them. Monthly salvage kit usages are pretty good as well, even though I'd perhaps preferred a monthly crafting achievement or monthly gatherer achievement.

Then we get to the part that screams for a change to me. The sole experience survivor. Now, I am not complaining about it being impossible to get. It is hard for low levels, yes, but it is certainly doable when you're level 60 or so, or even earlier. However, it seems weird to me that the monthly achievement requires you to do something without dying once (which means you have to focus on pve and avoid falls and huge zergs of mobs) and doesn't tolerate logging out or even changing zone or doing a personal story quest. Perhaps even waypointing breaks it (haven't tested  really, but I think that it does).

I acknowledge that most of this is probably not unintended. The way I see it, it seems that the feature was meant to be doable even if you log out or change zones. Either way, the sole experience survivor seems unfun to me and at least it doesn't fit to my playstyle (at level 53) that I would go and focus on one PvE zone non stop to get this achievement done, which can take hours and hours. I would at least fix it so that you could log out but an even better solution would be to change it to monthly experience/karma collector. Then you could collect experience without worrying about PvP deaths or fall damage and still get the monthly achievement.

I also know that the achievement is not a must-to-have but so far I haven't met anybody who actually likes pursuing this goal. What do you guys think about it?

I agree it's challenging but I like that. I ha fun trying to stay alive for 200,000 XP, although I could see others think it was complete b/s. Some achievements are going to be easy and fun for some and hard and /nerd rage for others

It should be easy enough once they fix it so it doesn't reset on zone change and log out, currently at lvl 70 it takes less than a whole level to get it so it's quite easy to get when just doing hearts.

xp counter resets on zoning?  this is clearly not how it was meant to function.

I've already got my monthly.. easiest way to get that survior title is probably to save up all your crafting materials and then go to town on crafting in one sitting. easy enough... or you can actually get out there and try to survive.. but it's done it tiers.. so it's very doable. it's basically "get a level without dying."

You have to realize that monthly is tuned for level 80.

At level 80 you get 10k+ for a single dynamic event, and the monthly survivor only takes 100k to do for your month.

To put that in perspective, doing Twilight Arbor, a level 50 dungeon, gives you 34k at the end. That alone is more than 1/4th of what you'd need. Imagine then, what you'll get for finishing Arah?

Point is, you really cannot judge it based on anything below 80, or at least 70. It took me all the way till about 60 to finish mine for the first month, where as doing it for this month I got it on the first day.

Yes I agree, one should be able to change zones, do personal story, log out, etc.

I'm level 41 right now and cant get that by farming one zones dynamic events over and over, even after I get map completion.

But as Adeptus said it's probably more easily attainable at level 60+ since experience seems to scale with your level.

If anything, the monthly achievement seems a little underwhelming, in that so many people have already gotten it in the course of one holiday weekend's amount of playtime.

Also, with the Experience Survivor portion, remember that once you gain a tier, you don't lose it.  If you die or it bugs on teleporting or zoning, you only lose that experience you've earned within the tier you're working on.  You don't start back at the first tier of the achievement.

Was reading another post about this achievement and even re-rolled my character to work on this title.

I do like to work towards this achievement.  In GW1 all my characters were legendary survivors (even back before the punching).  Just another target to aim for "fun".

Then got logged out for maintenance and the progress bar won't update anymore.

I even stayed in one zone and ran/walked everywhere.....

Hope they fix the zoning/personal story, etc. stuff.

But then maybe I can do it when my characters are higher level too.

I do like it. I feel like the not-dying-thing add an additional layer of challenge in the game. And even if the survivor achievements are broken, I did play that way. I finished the monthly achievement in a level 35 not avoiding a single event and would have finished way earlier if it wasn't bugged.

At level 80, it'd be fairly easy for anyone.

In my opinion you just think too much, I completed it just by playing, without even trying lol

Personally I don't like the monthly one, because if you don't PVE or PVP your basically screwed and you can't finish it ever. There should have been a PVP version of it. :P

Is the not dying just for pve? For example I just died in Wvw does that mean I have to start over again in pve? If so

I managed to get this months already. Last month I missed out on due to the bugs with Survivor. This time I remembered to stay in the zone and not change instances.

I agree it forces you ( if you want the achievement ) to play the game in a way that is grindy and in a way that you would not normally play, it also discourages you to help others take on harder content incase you die....

Its a totally stupid system that needs to be re looked at.

I got the survivor achievement for both months GW2 has been out without even paying attention to it.

100.000xp isn't that much when you rack in 20k+ per event. You just have to stay alive for 5 consecutive events, which I wouldn't consider an extreme feat.

Tip for survivor? Craft. At high levels you can get it in just a few crafts.

I have to agree. Measures like this just make people who are trying to get it avoid all forms of danger, which doesn't really add anything to it...

And they definitely should fix the scaling so low level chars don't have to do so much work compared to the high level ones.

I don't agree with you saying it's grindy. At lvl80 the monthly achievement is only 100k experience without dying, that's not even half a level. If someone cannot do half a level without dying (within a whole month), I believe he's doing something wrong.

I got my monthly survivor requirement in WvW.
I think taking stonemist castle or any keep when you have a level 80 character gets you about...50k xp?

That said, at lower levels, it was a pretty major challenge. Crafting is probably the easiest method.
