Sorry but that's what I think about every time I hear someone ask how it works.


But on topic, I have similar questions:

Does Magic Find work on killing mobs and looting them (easy yes)
Does Magic Find work to find you more blue+ or green+ or yellow+ quality loot? (which?)
Does Magic Find work on crafting materials? (assuming question #2 is blue+)
Does Magic Find work to help you find gems more often while mining? (assuming question #2 is blue+).


From what I've gathered you can get magic find pretty high:

2 rings, 2 earrings, and 1 amulet @ +3% each -- Total of 15% (even platinum/mithril quality give you the same 3% that exotics do).
5-6 Superior Runes of the Noble / Pirate -- Total of 50% (I think doing 5 of 1 and 1 of another gets you a total of 60% though...)
Full Magic Find Armor -- Total of 18%
Magic Find Weapon -- Total of 3% (if 2h) or 6% (if 1h)
Superior Sigil of Luck -- Total of 15% (with 25 stacks)
Chocolate Omnomberry Cream -- Total of 40% (if booned)

Which would get you 144% I think? Perhaps you can even hit 147% if you use an upgrade component on your cloak (last I checked you could). And this brings me to my last question.

Does Magic Find stack beyond 100%?


All that being said, these questions are pretty specific, to the point that they really can only be answered with a post by the game developers on how it works, so does anyone happen to have a link to such a post? Anything else is pretty much guesswork at this point in time as there hasn't really been enough of it (time) to test out how this mechanic works fully.

I have no idea how it works, but you can actually get it a lot higher than 144%.

5x Jewelry - 15%
5x Gems in jewelry - 15%
6x Explorer's Armor - 18%
6x Armor Runes - 50% + 10%
2x Weapons - 6%
Superior Sigil of Luck - 15%
Omnomberry Cream - 40%
Guild Buff - 10%
Booster - 50%

Total - 229%

Supposedly it works like the standard formula for most games: If the drop rate of an item is 1%, and I have 50% magic find, then the drop rate of that item is now 1.5%. Or if a drop rate is 10%, and I have 200% magic find, then the drop rate is 30%.

I have no idea if it caps out at a certain point. Or if it applies to crafting materials (just assuming that because a crafting mat is blue is wrong, because it could have a hidden label of "Crafting Material" and not "Gear" that causes it to not be affected by magic find, depends on how categorization is handled in GW2). Or if it applies to mining/harvesting/etc (I don't think it does, though).

What sucks is that most of the questions we have can ONLY be answered by a developer. No amount of testing in the world can actually tell us how it works. Even with tons of magic find, drops are still random. One person could just be extremely unlucky and his data would be much different than everybody else's.

The only thing I can tell you, is that I've finished by magic find set - I had the 229% today while farming for 2 hours.... and I didn't notice any difference at all in amount of drops or quality of drops. In fact, I did a world boss event and got 2 yellows and 2 greens without magic find but with magic find I only got 4 blues. Complete randomness even with magic find. It seems to be a useless stat - hell, it could even be broken right now and we would never know.

Actually you can get 35% based on Jewelry+Gems, not 30% because of Exquisite Opal Orichalcum _____ items are 4%+3%, otherwise thats crazy haha got me beat by about 100% xD Since I used Peach Tart, no sigil of luck, and no boosters.

Did you do a numerical tally of the loot drops? Given how high your magic find is boosted, It would be immensely helpful in determining how magic find works if you could do a simple loot drop quality count over half an hour of the same content (I know this is hard to satisfy) with and without magic find.

Also, depending on how magic find is programmed, it's certainly possible that boosting your magic find this high broke the loot mechanic and cause you to have worse drops than without it. You might want to try running with less magic find, say 100 - 150% and see how it goes.

can you stack sigil of luck?

i mean one of main hand and one on offhand, will you get up to 50 stacks then or is 25 just the cap?

What exactly is "magic" items? I am a little confused. How do you know if something is Magic = does it say Magic somewhere in the description?

Is there a list somewhere that shows Magic Items?

I got ((if I remember correctly something like) Silver onyx - does Not go into collection area.

Thanks - I am trying to learn as much as I can lol.......

Which is REALLY hard to get since there is no log file. It might be possible to cut and paste as you go, but even then, I'm not sure. It may be the only way to get the data is to manually keep a log- i.e. tack number of mobs killed, what specifically dropped, etc, all by hand, and all of which is extremely error prone.

To the question about does Sigil of Luck stack: I can't say 100%, but I'll say no. I've had two weapons that both gave a + condition damage buff, but both contributed to the same stack, which still maxed at 25. Having 2 1 hand weapons together with it might allow you to get the 25 stacks faster (or it may not), but you'll still only have 25 stacks max, regardless of how many Sigils of Luck you have.

also take into account.. with magic find gear your missing out on a lot of damage- which means less items in the zerg.. I just go all damage now and I get ton of drops.. more drops = more chances

yeah can pretty much say dps is the way to go.. I have no magic find- this is all just out dps the zerg.. it rains drops- I used to have magic find and I couldn't use the pistol auto to create enough aoe damage to get the drops over the lufugus (they're starting to pour into orr)

I saw one of them today, trained and he ran away yelling 'F THIS ZONE' lol
