I got my obsidian armour after going into FoW ONCE.

It was not an achievement.

I bought all the materials with gold. I got all my gold selling The Deathbringer when Nightfall first released. I farmed for 1 day and had over 1000k gold.

I had to do a couple of quests.

Yeah, like the folk who got a legendary precursor in the chest during the recent one-time Karka event, who could pretty much sell it and be set up for the life of this game, even after buying a full set of T3 cultural armor. Boils down to luck.

Never mind T3, just getting crafted exotics costs over 20g now.

Then add on weapons/jewellery/upgrades...

Finally got my alt to level 80 but think im going to have to give up now because the amount of effort to max him out is too daunting.

Quick question. Slight off topic. Rare dungeon armor looks the same as the exotic one?

Rare dungeon armor: Same for all dungeons look wise
Exotic dungeon armor: Different than rare and unique for every dungeon theme look wise (aka the true dungeon armors)

nope it doesn't, all the rares are just generic skins, all the exotics have the unique dungeon skins, it's so that the unique skin can't be obtained "too" easily

Meh, I thought I would be able to get rare armor for cheap and then use Fine Transmutation Stones.

If you're looking for rare armor with a unique look, check out the Order armors. They're not cheap, still near 9 gold for an entire set although usually achievable in getting a toon from 1-80. That said, with all the ascended stuff on the way, rares are pretty much mid-grade trash now, so buy them only for the look.

For those who want exotics and don't want to buy them off the TP, I think the only other way is to run the current dungeons. It takes time, but dungeon runs also pay in coin and other small drops besides the tokens. The length of time it would take to grind out the coin to buy exotics off the TP is just not realistic at this point. Anyway, it's over 1200 tokens for a full armor set if I'm not mistaken, and then factor in more for weapons. Two-handed ones go for 390 tokens each. Don't forget runes as well. Some are not obtainable off the TP and can only be found in the dungeons or bought with tokens.

You can get exotic chest and leg pieces for karma (Orr temple armour) if you've saved your daily jugs (and you get smaller versions from dungeons). The rest of the armour pieces are 180 tokens/3 dungeon runs each, which isn't so much (12 runs in AC/TA/CoF for 4 pieces isn't all that long or hard).

Weapons: yes, depending on what you want you can do a mix of dungeon stuff and at lvl80 you may have like 10 gold in cash but want to use that gold on exotic trinkets as the only way to obtain those are buying them from the TP (or farm FotM for a while).

I don't really have the tools or means for a legendary weapon so T3 for characters is a fun option.

OH LOOK OBSIDIAN ARMOUR!!!!!!!

*ing clueless people.

Two options.

1: If what you said is true, then you're definitely the exception rather than the rule. Not too many people had the good fortune to walk into a drop that sold for that much coin. There are always outliers.

2: If what you said is false, then why bother trying to impress people on a forum? Sure, it's easy to come up with a story about insta-riches allowing you to buy the materials. And I do agree...Obsidian armor was indeed available without stepping foot in Underworld, and only once into fissure of woe. But that money had to come from somewhere.
