I finally stumbled across my first back piece: Strong Back Brace.

I see there is a 'hide/show' check, but it doesn't seem to really do anything?

Also, I tried applying an upgrade stone like I'd apply to any of my other trinkets and armor, but it's red when I hover over it and it won't let me apply it?

I was curious as to what you are supposed to use to upgrade it, and what the hide/show is supposed to do for that piece?

I know that if you get the Backpack from wvw vendors it literally shows on your back :) so not sure if every back gear has it, but backpack definitely does

That first one you get only lets you use the lowest level of upgrade. They need to put in an error message saying "item level too high" or something.

I think it was a personal story reward, around lvl 30-40 can't quite remember.

Thanks for the replies, folks!

I really need to learn how to WvW :(

Yes, I believe it was a personal story reward, and I got mine in Lornar Pass?  I'm human and went with the archaeologist story where I'm helping the Priory.  My next mission sounds fun, I got to pick between 3 different races to go investigate further.  I chose the underwater folk (don't remember their name).

So I need to go find like a really low level stone that came off a copper node maybe as an upgrade?  I'll try that, thank you.

SO what counts as the lowest level of rune? I tried to apply a "Minor" rune to it, but it doesnt go in. Whats lower than Minor?

It won't take a rune, it's considered an accessory. Put one of the first tiers of jewel in it. The ones you get from mining or jeweler.

Wow you were right, the starter jewels fit in there. Funny because there is an in-game description on the item "strong back brace" that says "This equipment goes under armor and can hold an additional upgrade." , Yet when I tried a rune, which is for armor only, it didnt work.

Yeah. I think they meant to phrase it literally though.. as in "it slides in under your chest armor." According to the wiki, the 6 slots in that part of the character panel are all considered accessories.

That actually makes a lot more sense.

For anyone that's curious, the 'starter' jewels are:
  • Turquoise (+Vitality)
  • Tiger's Eye (+Precision)
  • Pearl (+Healing Power)
  • Amber (+Condition Damage)
  • Garnet (+Power)
  • Malachite (+Toughness)

No need to bring a thread from September back to the frontpage again here in Q&A.
