Actually, for those who think they are seeing relevant meaning in the trailer, please explain the meaning behind a spray can labeled "blue" that contains red paint. Because that's what the trailer has:

Am I the only one who actually liked it? o.o If you understand what it's about I think it's a pretty cool trailer. Besides, why would anet waste tons of cash on some fancy CGI trailer that doesn't really matter much anyways? If people are interested in the game they'll look up some gameplay videos or the manifesto.
No, really. Stop this. We get what it's about. You would have to be less than retarded not to get it, since it outright tells you, word for word, what it's about. It's that it's unbelievbly, mind-blowingly, epicly pretentious. I feel embarassed for myself and anyone who plays this game watching it.

If you want to check if your computer will run GW2, check here.

If you find out you can't and need to think about upgrading or building another, check here.

So how many people watching it at a cinema will get a chance to watch it twice ?

You know... there's a wonderful thing called the Internet. It allows you to look up all kinds of wonderful things. If someone at the cinema did find the trailer interesting, surely they'd go home, or even go onto their mobile phone, and check out Guild Wars 2? Maybe even deliberately search for the trailer themselves? Then they can watch it as many times as they like. The whole purpose of this trailer is to spark interest, and I find it to be very intriguing, even though I already own the game.

That was a remarkably bad ad. Though kudos to the marketing company that managed to sell Anet on that line. ;p

I don't get the Zhaitan spoil claims, really.  Obviously if they're putting him in the official trailer, his appearance isn't meant to be some sort of secret anymore.

true , i heard alot of people say that they want to see "The Big treat"  in the beginning , course the game is already out but who cares here you got a trailer showing the thing that tries to destroy them:P

In my opinion, really crappy trailer, didnt get one bit of "feeling" from that one, dosent make any sence, dosent have anything to do with the game, except the bit at the end, just crappy.

Oh well, its pure comercial material, clearly not for the fans of the game, move along nothing to see here, back to the game, atleast there i like what i see and im having fun :)

Duh, the video is almost as bad as those stupid "Join us on Facebook!" commercials, except much longer and inconsistent.

If anything, Anet needs to learn from these guys, nearly every EVE trailer has been marvelous - great at conveying emotion, bringing necessary context to understand what it's all about and keeping the viewer interested for upwards of 4 minutes straight, examples:

I can see what they were attempting to do, but it seemed way too silly, almost like a cult sort of thing and rather pretentious. I'd wished they stuck with their iconic style they've used in...well, every other trailer. The artistic paintings overlaying their in-game graphics was great and unique to what they've been aiming for in Guild Wars (the painterly style). If I didn't know it was a Guild Wars 2 trailer, I would assumed it was some new age motivational thing, or an ad for something, up until the last 15 seconds.

The transition was awkward and several of the scenes were just downright odd, and odd can be good. The problem was the way they did it, it felt like a mess, like the director just put a bunch of random unrelated visuals together hoping that some message would come out of it, like in the movie The Cell. It was interesting to look at, but overall, left me disappointed. I'd rather just call the gamescom trailer the official trailer for the game.

As of late, Anet's most recent motto is "we have great ideas, but we execute them rather poorly". They need to get a grip over themselves, because stuff like this is completely inconsistent with the product AND all the community hype + marketing material they've produced until now. It basically insults their core audience and does very little to attract people outside their target group. I'm honestly appaled this video has even got a stamp of approval.

I seriously doubt this trailer is meant for non-gamers, so that's irrelevant.

Oh?  Who then?  Because someone raised this question to Martin Kerstein on Twitter shortly after the trailer's release, and he responded with this:

Quote

you might not be the target group ;) also: we did not make it in 3D ^^

We don't have a very wide field of candidates to choose from as far as the target audience is concerned.  We have GW fans who clearly don't like the trailer.  We have gamers who are not GW fans who probably are going to react similarly, and we have non-gamers.  Who's left?  The Amish?

;)

Actually for a trailer that would be really bad (shouldn't really say bad but it's definitely not better). You got to think if this pops up on TV for a non/casual gamer and their mind would just turn off as it's any other game ad. You got to think outside the box with ads and this trailer just does the norm and will not get anyone's attention.

that is a good example of a bad commercial. I watched it last night and till now I have not forwarded it to any one.( i have doen that with every manifesto/profession etc  trailer before)

hell I didn't even show it to my wife. dont want to spoil her game for her.

for me it made no sense at all. the way its shot is good but what is happening? what does it mean? why are people walking on fire? and who was editing this? people caught a mistake in it like on the very first day.

I feel like they could have tacked on absolutely any other product in the last 15 seconds of this trailer and it would have made about as much sense.

"Do you see yourself as young, attractive, and oppressed in your first world nation?  Here's a product for you!"

The thing it seemed most likely to be selling was a political movement trying to attract a younger audience by making themselves seem hip and edgy without actually saying what they're about.

edit: It would be great as self-satire.  Overly dramatic call to make a stand and take charge of the world....by escaping to a video game.  Speaks of a crowd that complains about the way things are in the world and feel self-important in doing so, despite not actually doing anything about it.

I believe the trailer was just horrid. If I was looking at it and did not have guild wars 2 already I would have said what the heck is this and go and look at another game. I have no idea what they were thinking but they are not going to get many people to join the game that way. It does not even look like guild wars 2.

Honesty.. If you think about it. Would you buy guild wars 2 if you saw this trailor ?

Does anyone else remember Fry's Planet Express ad? I keep trying to find a video and can't... I'll break it down for you: Planet Express is a delivery company. The ad features an "attractive" (for a Futurama cartoon) female model running down a hall while carrying a box. Grim faces float by, chanting things like "conformity." Finally, she seems to reach where she's going and throws the box at the screen, where fake glass breaks and fade to black. I don't think planet Express or delivery are ever mentioned. Fry then says he likes it because it builds their brand. That is basically this trailer. Time to fire the creative agency.

I presume the target audience is impressionable teenagers, but I think even they'd find this trailer smacks of grandiose self-indulgence and is just generally silly. Comparing GW2 to revolution against dystopian social order is tantamount to saying it cures cancer. It's just ridiculous.

Also, given the amount of threads we've had regarding chain mail bikinis, I'm surprised no one's pointed out the blatant objectification and pandering of the female focus models. Nature of the beast, I guess, but still something I just find laughable. I think it's an incredible game, but things GW2 will not provide: individuality, social change, hot chicks. Maybe that should be a disclaimer running at the bottom?

Wait, what?  This has neither T nor A.  It has attractive women being involved rather than as a sideshow or nonexistent, and it doesn't sexualize them in any way.  All the men in this are also young and attractive (at least by Hollywood standards).  Where is the objectification?

edit: The in-game moment at the end is led by a woman, supported by a man, another woman, a male beastman, and a female short alien thing.

T&A no, obligatory focus on implausibly attractive women? Bingo. Like I said, I'd hardly expect them to go any other angle in that regard, but I still just find it kind of funny. Those models were obviously not chosen to empower women or attract them to the game, they're there to make boys drool. I just consider it another layer of how this trailer seems to try to sell the game based on anything but what it is.

Gameplay? Innovation? Events? Screw that. Cute girl with a nose ring! Where's my wallet?

It's an odd juxtaposition, the words speak of concepts of identity, personhood, and individuality, while the camera lingers on subjects chosen exclusively for their looks.

Yeah, the gas mask part and the walking on coals part did remind me heavily of TSW more than GW2, and I did think they uploaded the wrong video at first.  However, I know that I'm not the target audience for this, and I don't claim that I know how I'd react if I were that audience.

I think someone's suggestion earlier that they should have had multiple people changing into their character like the girl did...it may have made a stronger impression, but oh well.
