I think I finally decided on Ranger to take to 80 first and was wondering about pets. I'm thinking about doing a Canine and a Boar for my two pets and just switch out constantly, but I'm concerned the boar's Forage is a useless skill.
Does anyone use Boars and if you do, what are fun tricks you use them for?

As a melee ranger I find the boar great! But if you plan on going pure ranged I don't think Forage is that much of use, unless any melee in your group pay attention to it and pick it up. But just try it out and see how you like it?

All the porcine pets have Forage and I find it utterly useless, if incredibly fun. I still run a boar, 'cause I like him and he isn't half bad; he seems to open with his KD, which I like.
I sometimes swap him out in tougher content, though, for something with a good f2

I use a Juvenile Pig named Sooie. No special reason for using him I just like him. tho his 3 sec knockdown is a plus. The one i use spawns healing items like a seed pod or elixir of heroes. I usually only use it's forage skill in dungeons so melees can grab an item to give them a little extra healing when they need it

Eh, boars are ok, but if I was going to use a boar-like pet, I would go with a Warthog while using a condition build. This is because the condition causing items that they get from forage will increase in damage with your gear/talent stats.
I made a post on these pets a while back to outline what the forage abilities provide since it's not directly stated in the tooltip and also because I think these pets are often very underrated. That being said, I still rarely use a boar-like pet, lol.

i always come back to bear no matter what. Other pets just die too quick.

Bears are easier to keep alive for sure, but I personally prefer popping some points into BM and having a feline/canine DPS pet with signet of stone for emergencies (I also like panther pets for f2 stealth xD so much fun!) Bears are good for support in that they can be good condition sponges if you're wanting to support front liners, but when soloing I find their damage and normal attack skills really below par.
To the OP:
Boars are fun, forage isn't powerful (in that it takes a long time) but the random factor is definitely fun! I quite like playing around with them as a melee fighter (so you're in range to actually use the environmental weapons. Also bare in mind different porcines forage different kinds of weapons: boars give u a chance for fear, stun or knockdown environmental weapons, whereas pigs provide more supportive consumables (with small heal buffs, they can be good if you play a squishy melee ranger >.<) warthog forage is condition heavy with lots of poison possibilities.
Basically, have fun and experiment with pet choice
