There's only 6 available. We don't even know what they translate into.

Hopefully, we'll find some more in GW2. And their meaning.

I could have sworn that we had some idea of what they were... ideograms I think they are called. They are not specific words or sounds, but ideas instead. No possible direct translation, to my knowledge.

Yes, we do know what they are, but not what they mean. Matthew Medina - the language expert at Anet - said that the charr don't have a language but rather use symbols that represent aspects of the charr culture - fire, honor, war, victory, etc.

By how he worded it, it seems like each symbol has a specific meaning to it, which are used to represent rough messages.

Here's what Matt said:

Quote

They do not have a written language of their own, but they do use a limited series of ideograms, as seen on the Charr Battle Plan Decoder wheel. Each ideogram represents a quality or an entity that the Charr admire or respect, such as strength, courage, victory, honor, etc. Charr ideograms were not widely embraced, in part as a reflection of the Shaman caste's draconian rule, until Pyre Fierceshot led the revolt against them.

Wait a minute, I thought the charr invented the printing press. What for if they don't have a written language?

First of all, it said charr technology led to the invention of the printing press, not that the charr invented it.

Secondly, by that time, New Krytan was established and New Krytan is a multi-racial alphabet (alphabet!=language). The ideograms and the quote are from and about (respectively) GW1's time.

Splitting hairs is necessary at times.

The devil is in the details. If people people in the lore forums didn't split hairs we woudln't know anywhere near as much as we know about GW lore as we do now. Konig is one of the more chronic hair splitters, but thats probably why he is one of the more knowledgable people in there.;)
