I don't really regret any of the time I've spent on all of my alts, but my thoughts on the other classes since I have all above level 40:
warrior - boring. Don't really like any 1 handed weapons, can't stand being rooted for 100b so I don't like GS, mainly just stick to hammer shout heals. war was my main in GW1, definitely not anymore.
guardian - didn't like it at first but after switching up my build and picking up a hammer full time I like it a lot more. starting to do more content on him, probably my 2nd most played character right now and I'm getting him the juggernaut over my warrior as I play him more now than anyone but my engineer.
ranger - main WvW character, rarely played in normal PvE. Like shortbow and traps, but fairly boring to play. Waiting for a few skill changes so I can go back to sword/torch without being rooted as it was fun but that rooting problem is bad. wish pets were better.
mesmer - lowest leveled character right now (43), wasn't really having a lot of fun on it so I benched him. Leveling sucked really bad up to level 40 so I just got bored and started playing other alts.
thief - leveled to 80, don't really find it that fun other than I really like having initiative over the cooldowns on other classes. got the underboob and moved on to other classes. I never really liked this type of class in any game, mainly just did it to get the underboob armor (inside joke about it in my guild).
elementalist - I like staff as I level (currently 65), but I'm still "learning" the profession as I'm still in the mindset of my GW1 ele - when in doubt, run fire and meteor shower ftw. Not quite the same in this game. Want to try d/d again but it just feels too squishy to me.
necro - ugh. I had such high hopes for the class as necro was my main alt and 2nd most played character in GW1. Then I played it to 56 as my 2nd character (engy was first) and haven't played since. Minions suck and wells/marks build is fairly boring to me. Haven't really tried conditions truly, and I probably should, but I'm too busy working on juggernaut for my guardian. Will probably revisit after this adventure for a legendary.

Main was a thief, but I've barely touched him since playing mesmer - it's just so much more fun.

BUT. Noone wants to have a necro in the party. People are too simple-minded and only wanna play with warrs, guards and mesmer.
Leveled up a warrior just to be accepted in groups. Boring but best damage. sigh.

I chose it for it's overall conceptual theme and flavor, as what I would most like to represent me in the world of Tyria.
Not technical performance.

However, unlike my other 80s (guardian, thief, and ele) I find it really hard to find a role that I like on my mesmer. I don't feel like I really especially excel at anything, unlike my other characters where they fell into place pretty early on. I've changed my trait setup more times than I can count, but nothing's clicked. I've got set weapons, but sometimes I still feel like they're not exactly what I want. Condition damage isn't great and even though I'm traited to get confusion to last as long as possible, it doesn't trigger frequently enough to do much damage. Single target damage is good, but not great, and AoE on a mesmer is basically non-existent.
And then on the other hand, we have some really, really amazing skills that whenever I'm not on my mesmer I really miss having around (like Feedback and Time Warp).
So I wouldn't say I regret making her my main, but I do feel like the profession's limitations make it so she's definitely not ideal for some of the things I like doing. I really wish we had more AoE options, and another mainhand weapon. The profession really feels like it's lacking things sometimes.

What I did:
Weapons: greatsword. sword-focus
Armor: knights stats
Rest: berserker stats
Traits: 30-30-0-10-0
Dont hit as hard as a warrior, but 2000-3000 crits with auto attacks is still a welcome sight.

Think my next alt will be warrior or ranger. Not sure yet.
Biggest dissapointment was ele, I picked it as my main in beta as I loved ride the lighting and dagger / dagger ele plus having 20+ skills at the touch of the button was nice. Then they nerfed ele into the ground before launch and ruined the profession....I was an ele in GW1 and loved it.
So yeah that sucked, switched to guardian as main at launch.

Yeah I'm playing with sword again. Focus isn't my favorite off-hand but the pull is nice, and the auto-attack is okay aoe. Still not great for getting tags in high level events though.

I've tried other classes but Death Shroud is too darn handy for me to get rid of so I usually end up gravitating back towards my Necro. In fact, playing other classes usually solidifies my intent on playing Necro, because I can end up having a good idea of how my main stacks up against them.

This describes my situation exactly. So annoying that necro is misunderstood. I find it a heck of a lot more statisfying to see triple digit numbers absolutely streaming out of a pack of mobs rather that slower, big numbers on warrior. I also feel I have to think a bit more on necro. It's more engaging. Warrior feels to much of a stand there and faceroll it profession. It's not for me personally, but gotta do it if I don't want to be refused groups on a regular basis.

Warrior is just OP at this moment.. Every weapon except rifle is AoE + the GS with current traits is so strong.
You can say how you prefer the smaller numbers but my warrior in Arah hits for for ~2k damage with every auto-attack, 100b goes even to 28k damage in just couple of seconds, nothing can match that atm.
That being said, I always like to have a necro in my team.
I often speedclear dungeons, and having a mark/well necro with me makes using the safespots and balling enemies up a joke.
So many people hate on eles/necros but still, one of best combos I found so far is:
1) Ball up enemies.
2) Perma blind from necro well.
3) Perma blind from ele sandstorm.
4) Enemies will be dead before they can hurt you.

But even so, I usually have at least two "mains" in any game I play. I spend about equal time on my thief these days because she's more fun in wvw and pvp, and I actually like the looks of a lot of medium armor sets. I currently have 11 characters (yes I've double-dipped on classes and races) but my necro has clocked 261 out of 390 hours so far and has 98% map completion and I'm still not bored with her.

I don't really care which does most damage. I know which is more fun for me and that it's certainly good enough for any dungeon.. and to do things quick enough. I've noticed that I've always gravitated to damage-over-time type classes that do have a bit of burst (Signet of Spite, Well of Suffering and Epidemic.. mobs just melt.) I prefer to dot up a lot of mobs and be a bit more supporty.. having to think more, rather than straight out dps.

I wish more people realised this! Especially that necros can help warriors do more damage when inflicting invulnerabilty.

Well when you get 3 warriors with GS, that inflict vuln with crits, I find most enemies already have ~15 stacks or more permanently.
The problem is just warriors are way to strong right now.
Which is a shame, cause other professions can do such awesome things, and running 3 wars/2 guards gets really boring fast.

Stop picking on the most balanced class and start working on the classes which need work ffs.
And the beef which I have with warriors is the bloody cookie cutter builds and roles. *ing game is *ing boring with running the same shit again and again.

If warrior is "the most balanced profession" and you agree all other classes need work, the warrior is still OP..
And your second statement is just the same, war is OP.

Same here. I think the thief is a great profession, but I'm currently having such a blast on my human Mesmer! I don't regret my Thief, but I can't really bring myself to log her on that much any more. I'm content with everything about my Mesmer from her name to her looks to her gameplay. I'm also very happy with my Charr Engineer, he's got a lot of variety and has so many fun ways to blast enemies, though my Mesmer has definitely grown on me more.

Again you fail to understand.
In a 1500CC motorcycle race all bikes are of the same class and almost same quality. The racers and of course the machine's subtle optimisations make the difference in seconds.
Likewise, just because 1 class is not performing as well as another it does not mean the other class is overpowered. The game is balanced 1v1. It might just be you.
And what I meant by my last statement is there is no diversity high level gameplay.

In dungeons and WvW, i prefer my warrior for the playstyle i have with my guild. That said, i have done map completion on my thief and a lot more hours on that toon as well. But i just prefer my warrior nowadays and i also spent more gold on his armour./weapons etc. I think i have to do map completion on him to really call it my new main tho!
The biggest surprise for me is that i like the elementalist. Especially the bunker d/d ele in WvW. I never really play mages in games but the d/d ele is insanely fun! The mobility especially!

And also the reason why I managed to level a necromancer was because of their healthpool it could take some beating without dying.
