I had exactly the same reaction.

I can understand that some of you gamble 100 or 200 gold into MF but 1500 gold ? Give up and gather 600 remaining gold ? This is an insane amount of money

Want Spark, please save me T_T

I have no idea where you guys pull these huge amounts of money from.

2100 gold for a not-yet crafted LW, this is just absurd.

Tell me about it.  Ive been playing 3 months now and have a whopping 20 gold saved.  Oh well.  Ive pretty much written off the whole legendary weapon thing as something I will never devote the time to doing.

also i find it hard to belive someone would spend 2k rares on pre he wanna instead of buying it when he already have enugh money.

im sorry if im sceptic but somehow this storys about getting pre on the first try and crazy amount of rares flushed out in the mystic toilet by too many dont sim's right.
It's your good right to belive whatever you think is accurate. (2k rares for a pre would be a nice profit btw ;))

Well, although this is offtopic: started playing pve 2months after release (was doing pvp only before). i kept farming ac and cof and bought all helloween skins i could get whenever i had enough money (~15-20g/ea). Made quite some money by selling them later. I then kept crafting highend exotics, also yielded a good profit (some weaps still do). All you have to do is run through the whole map to grind skillpoints on some chars and then craft weaps (volcanus for 100g+profit, all the foefire weapons.. good time ^^). Then i crafted twilight and sold it for 3k+ gold.
Afterwards i started gambling cause i didnt know what to do with all the money. And ye, thats when i started posting here. =)

For me, gathering so much gold would mean severely overplaying the game. I have no desire to do that, plus I'd probably quit playing half-way there or when I'd finally craft a LW.

It's all about luck. Farming over 1.5k gold is just ridiculous. I got lucky with karka chest though (the legend, sold it for ~300g being afraid of another chest on christmas which didnt happen) and mystic forge - having spent more than 200g on gs' i got so pissed off that i took 1 month break. Finally got my 2nd legend, which was enough to get dawn and complete my sunrise along  with 600g i farmed before I had almost quit. It's possible guys, just don't give up :)
Flip materials from time to time, farm cof p1 sometimes, do some daily events, etc., and forge, at least 4 times a day (80lv crafted rares which are much more profitable, especially staves and daggers), that's all. One day u might get lucky.

No way. 4 random lvl 37 rares or 4 lvl 37 staffs?

I find it highly unlikely that such low level gear would even be able to turn into a lvl 80. As far as I have seen MF rewards the same (or close to the same) level as the items added to the forge. Not something that is more than double its level.

Bah, it's so stupid how Anet implemented Legendaries through RNG like this. I've been playing this game since launch, and haven't gotten one single precursor yet!!!!

You know what would of been better? One super long epic quest! Which would take a very long time to do, but in the end it would be worth it because then we could all have that precursor or legendary we've all wanted for so long.

Forget this RNG bs!

Last night I got on a lucky RND streak:

I did 3 world bosses in a row.

Golem II Boss - 1 guaranteed rare + 2 more rares
Shatter - 1 guaranteed rare + 2 more rares
Maw - 1 guaranteed rare + 1 more rare

I started my normal inventory management. I savaged all whites and blues. I used my BLK on 5 of the rares. I averaged 2 ecto per rare for 10 ecto. I ran out of BLK and needed to go back to LA to get more out of the my bank. When getting to LA I first MF'ed my greens. I got 3 rares from the first and only 3 sets of greens I put in. I couldn't believe it because I never have that kind of luck. I shouted out over the Guild chat and two guildies encouraged me to try for a precursor. They said at least I probably would get an exotic from my rares. So I did and here are my results...

Try 1 - 4 random lvl 80 rares (weapons only) = Carcharias. I couln't beleive it. Not the best precursor, but it counts :)

I was encouraged to try more so I grabbed two more rares from my bank...

Try 2 - 4 random lvl 80 rares (weapons and armor) = Pearl great sword. Sold back to TP for 4.8g

At this point I was out of rares, but decided to keep trying my luck. I crafted 16 great swords from mats I already had....

Try 3 - 4 lvl 80 great swords of mixed variety = lvl 80 rare great sword

Try 4 - 4 lvl 80 great swords of mixed variety = Pearl Great sword. Sold back to TP for 4.8g

Try 5 - 4 lvl 80 great swords of mixed variety = lvl 80 rare great sword

Try 6 - 4 lvl 80 great swords of mixed variety = lvl 80 rare great sword

I went and made 1 more rare great sword....

Try 7 - 4 lvl 80 great swords of mixed variety = lvl 80 rare great sword

I figured my luck had ran dry. I went to the bank and picked up another BLK to salvage the last rare. I got no ecto. I guess I used up all of my luck. I wish I would have put in all great swords on the first try when I got the pre, but if I did would have I had gotten the pre?

^ That's an interesting story, but whether you would've gotten a GS pre or not is unknown. Random thing is random... You can either throw in hundreds of rares and not get anything or you can get precursor on the first try. There's no such thing as "using all your luck up", it's simply just an RNG.

Randomness causes strange things though... for example the odds are that I'll throw a number 1 with a dice is 1/6, however it feels like I'm throwing that number half of the time. I remember that's why I didn't like board games as a kid, I though I was very unlucky throwing 1s all the time and I would always lose the game (well depending on which game we were playing...).
Many people feel the same way when they won't get anything while others get it in a few tries.

I should have noted that that was not my first try.  I have posted on this thread several times about my progress.  I have thrown in (donated) 100's of rares in the MF with very little result.  I have only received 2 exotics prior to this attempt.

I totally agree with you on the RNG part.  Randomness is mathematical.  Lucky is a human feeling.  I know the "lucky" streak I was on was nothing but the RNG being in my favor during that time, however I felt lucky therefor I kept trying.

I had actually resigned to stop trying the MF for a precursor on my last set of unsuccessful attempts.  Now that I got 1 precursor out of it, I may never try again.  The reason being is I feel my luck has run out in the MF.  If I end up with a bunch of mats from farming T6 items, I may try it again for the fun of it.

I also realize that most people will loose when looking at the MF as a way to get a Precursor.  I am a firm believer that most people should save their money wasted in the MF and buy the precursor of their choice.  I for some reason want to do it all myself down to farming the mats needed to build the legendary.

Alright, i kept selling the exotics i got back last time, and invested the returns directly into new materials (im def. not gonna stop after throwing in 1,5k gold).
Got lucky!

Im too lazy to write it down, so i just made a pic of my statistics this time.
(Ye i know, some excel sheet wouldve looked prettier, but writing it down by hand is easier and quicker :P).

V means Versuche, which is german and stands for Tries (= rares thrown into the mf).
Exos is selfexplaining i guess.
The next-to-last cell shows the amount of rares that i got from the mf (which i threw back into it).
A smiley indicates a precursor :).
Posted Image

So ye, overall ive thrown like 35k rares into the MF - and i still cant give any advise or recommendation wheter to buy that damn thing or gamble.

Here's the rares needed for each precursor:
  • Dusk: took me ~ 3.550 rares
  • Dawn  ~ 50 rares
  • Legend  ~ 950rares
  • Spark  ~ 780 rares
  • Zap  ~ 330 rares
  • Legend  ~ 3.200 rares
  • Legend  ~ 1.500 rares
  • Colossus  ~ 400 rares
  • Lover  ~ 2.450 rares
  • Spark  ~ 8.900 rares (ive used 8200 GS rares without any precursor, then swapped to daggers)
  • Colossus  ~ 280 rares
  • Legend  ~ 2.400 rares
  • Spark ~ 11.900 rares (mainly staves before i switched to daggers)
  • Legend ~ 600 rares
  • Spark ~ 400 rares
Ridiculous variance.
I really hope the announced precursor scavenger hunt will be implemented soon... prices atm are a joke. How can sth that is totally random make up half (or even more, depending) of what is needed for making a legendary?? (not to mention the clovers part...)

Decide for yourself if you want to take the risk or buy it off the TP. You can either lose everything or get a pretty penny :\. GL

quick note, a period is used as a comma in german numbers. so 1.800 would be onethousand eight hundred and not one point eight

So last week I got my Colossus (Hammer precursor). Buying it of the TP wasn't really an option for me. I got dragged into the whole gamble toilet circus and just had to get it from there. I made a habit of crafting 32 rares when I had gold for it without high expectations. In the beginning I tried a few times with exotics after getting convinced it had a far better chance (even better than rares of the same value etc) of giving a precursor. I gave that up fast after getting a few generic skin exotic hammers back and went back to rare crafting. Anyway last week somewhere the daily stated "mystic forge smith" again so I crafted my 32 hammers from totems (I think) and went to the toilet, again with pretty low expectations. First few returned rares back, then a travelers perl crusher, a few more rares, then a magmaton and with that I had 3 rare hammers left. So I went and bought another one for a last cleaning round and put them in. At first I though it was another magmaton but saw the beautiful exotic color with the name "The Colossus". I had a smile on my face the rest of the evening and still do when I think about it. If I were to guess I probably did 8-10 batches of 32 rares, bought maybe another 32 if I had 3 left, like above and 2-3 tries with exotics. You can probably do the math but of course way less gold than the ~700 gold that it sells for now. I feel sorry for some of you that spent so much gold on this but the kick of getting it is worth it compared to farming Orr to just buy it of the TP imho (easy to say, I know).

I got extremely lucky! last night i put level 80 rares into the forge and got the colossus! This might sound like a co-incidence but it was true! I've never spent money to buy loads of rare/exotics to gamble for a precursor only randomly dumped stuff occasionally into the forge. i guess yesterday was my lucky day! (I don't have screenshot of what i threw into the forge as i wasn't expecting to get a precursor from it considering some people have thrown 1500 greatswords ect into it and got nothing)

Random question. I am sure it can be found in thread but I dont have time to search it now.

Rares or exotics have to be lvl 80 or not to craft precursors? Whats the lowest lvl of weapons that might bring it?

Level 80 rare items have a much better chance to proc an exotic (precursor is a kind of exotic).

I don't know about the min level requirement.

A few days ago, I'd say Saturday or Sunday, a guy in our guild put 4 rare level 80 GS into the forge... first try came out with Zap. -___-'
I didn't even think that was possible. To make everyone even madder, he got at least 1 Collossus that same day from the same tactic. Apparently, he got 2 more, but I was only there for the first 2 precursors. Ridiculous....

He bought gold by some Chinese guy under a bridge. Odds are about 1000:1 that he did.

I don't think it is possible to have another type of weapon when throwing 4 objects of the same type...

4 GS = 1 GS

At least this is what I have observed from the hundreds of dagger I have thrown so far... :/

That's not impossible. I've had a trident come out of putting 4 GS into the forge. I still call shenanigans in that happening 4 times in 1 day and all cases leading to a precursor.

Lol nope, he wasn't even advertising he got the precursors, we were talking in GC, and he was ♥♥♥♥in around with some rares he got from world events. Put a few in, linked me Zap. I said wtf, he shows me and I'm like well dam. I get off, come back, find out the guy got 3 collossus afterwards. I guess after dealing with the Mystic Toilet for so long, the gods decided to bless him for that day haha. I did, however, have an old guildmate that did buy gold from the farmers. He just wanted to get his Sunrise before I did... he no longer has access to his account hehe

i finally got tired of stockpiling gold since i had nothing to spend it on, so i figured i'd start throwing rares into the forge again in hopes of getting a precursor. i've had everything to make Bitfrost for many months now, and i've put probably 150-200 gold into rares trying to get The Legend up until now, but no luck. i stopped caring, and even now, i still don't care.

so, i take out the 144 gold in my bank and start buying rare staffs. i re-forge all rares and sell all exotics (except for four, which i figured i'd throw in together). after about 100 failed attempts, i switch to greatswords, since i kinda want Twilight for my warrior and i could just use the gifts of mastery and fortune for it. needless to say, all of the greatsword attempts were fails too.

i'm out of gold now, but whatever. the highlight of the night was getting two Deathwishes in a row, but other than that...just another day of getting screwed over by Anet's fun-filled quest for a legendary.
