So, as the topic title states... I'm installing the game as we speak. I've played Guild Wars 2 for roughly an hour before on a friend's computer. Anyways, I played Guild Wars for several years, mainly as a Warrior in PvE. I'm just getting a good sample of what profession you guys think I should choose as my new "main" (at least for the time being) in Guild Wars 2. And no, don't give me any of that "It's up to you!" stuff... because in the end, I know that. I'm just trying to get a sampling of opinions.

I kind of wanted to try out something other than a Warrior, simply because tI hear they're overplayed, and I got my fill of being a Warrior in Guild Wars. Towards the end of the run, they became a less viable character choice. I think Engineers are interesting, but they seem weak and hard to grasp. I fooled around with a Ranger, but I'm not sure I was fond.

Anyways, yeah... give me opinions! If this is in the wrong area, move it, sorry!

It's really just up to you.

jk

I've played the following toons to the following levels...

Ranger 52
Necro 46
Thief 36
Engineer 8 or 10
Guardian 10

I'm sticking with Ranger as my main just because I want to have 1500 range in WvW but, honestly, I enjoyed my d/d thief the most.  After the Thief I would say that Necro/Ranger are about even for me.  I have always liked the "dark caster" type and did enjoy Necro a lot I'm just thinking, again, that at 80 Ranger may be the best WvW of the three of them.

I was having fun on my Guardian but honestly I think it may be because it sorta reminded me of my goblin Death Knight that I played for a couple months after Cataclysm dropped before I said goodbye to WoW.

I enjoyed Engineer the least but I really didn't play Engineer or Guardian enough to really figure out how I felt about them and I really did not like the dry, barren Charr starter area so that might have skewed my opinion.

Doubt that helps but hope it does.

I've read a lot of concerns about Elementalists though. They seem to be far too weak compared to other ranged counterparts in the game with the new playing style, and they don't make up for that in added protection. Apparently Rangers and others can surpass them easily in any form of long-ranged damage.

Yeah, I had also been considering the Thief as well and reading up on them. They seem like a fun profession and I may roll one of those. I was also thinking about the Guardian, just because it is a relatively new profession "type" to me and they seem very viable.

Elementalist and Mesmer are both fun for me, I tend to gravitate towards casters and they're both fairly difficult classes to excel with and I love a good challenge. I also like the playstyle of guardian (I like supporting :P) and from what I hear necro is good and engineer is pretty fun. I also have a ranger that I enjoy but the playstyle from what I've experienced is quite a bit more simple than that of the ele/mesmer. Coming from a warrior you might like it though, sword rangers are extremely fun xD

What they lack in personal toughness they more than make up for in utility. If you let mobs get to you (especially when you're using a staff) then you're not utilizing your utility skills and attunements properly. Also, I play my ele with a condition damage/duration trait set up and I do way more damage and have way more survivability than a straight power/precision glass cannon Ele (using Cond. dmg, vitality and power, or Carrion equipment). One of my favourite parts of playing ele is the ability to kite mobs and how rewarding it is when you properly utilize your attunements.
