If you want focus - 30 precision tree, 30 critical damage tree, with all skills that improve your damage, critical hit or cooldown. Take your pick for the remaining 10. A rifle build can be very powerfull but its going to be a semi glass cannon... All builds are "dungeon" capable, but unfortunetly their usefullness depends on the other 4 guys, not your specific build. Going all out rifle means pretty shitty support traits, ie none. Some groups dont need it. Some groups are crippled without it.

Main point about rifle is the crit damage. Something about 0/30/0/10/30 concerning the traits, should do the trick. Add a full set of Berserker armor, and stack Beryl jewelry. Why Beryl? Because it adds vitality on top of crit damage and power which will prevent you from being instagibbed. Only downside might be the crit chance but it should still be fairly high. The choice of your toolset depends of what you like and will be fairly compactible with everything else.

Turret and elixir builds are best for dungeons. Pouring points into traits for the bonuses they give is not a good idea, you should be after the traits. The firearms tree synergize well with rifle, though, so go ahead and pour your traits into that. Alchemy if you decide to go with an elixir build and inventions if you go turrets. You don't have to dump 30 points, experiment and put points into other things.

I have heard good things about dipping 10 into Tools for Static DIscharge as a way to increase damage on a Rifle-centric Engy. Also gives you option to go Speedy Kits for overland travel.

Might consider Flamethrower as your Kit of choice - some have reported good results from combining Rifle 1 or 3 with Incendiary Ammo.

I wouldn't be able to live without my 10 in tools for speed kits haha...so slow in traveling otherwise. That being said, don't forget that power plays a huge role in rifle dps as well...

While not strictly a pve-rifle only build, my pve/WvW build does VERY well as a hybrid of rifle/nades. Traits are 30/20/0/10/10. I have two sets of exotic armor, but one is more vit/toughness/magic find for farming/dungeons. The one I generally use (in WvW and even sometimes dungeons) is full berserker jewelry and armor. 10 alch gives me an extra 1000 hp, which is really all I seem to need as I tend to do very very well in WvW and dungeons. If you worry about survivability, can get valkyrie armor instead of berserker (or mix the two) for just as much crit dmg and power, but trade out some crit chance for vitality.

As a side note, static discharge is nice and all w/ a power rifle build, but it is more suited for spvp than pve. In pve, it bounces far and tends to get aggro you don't mean to get.
