The Legendary Sunrise

Today, 2nd October 2012 - after 10 days of waiting for patches - I was finally able to craft the legendary weapon Sunrise. In less than one month two players worked together on puzzling together the recipe and gathering all required materials in order to create one of the most epic weapons in the game.

Posted Image

* Original sigil was “Superior Sigil of Strength”

This achievement was not gained without sweat and tears. Since day one we set our sights on creating a Legendary and started slowly gathering all the pieces of the puzzle. Funding came from playing the Trading Post, especially volatile trading. No gems were bought with real $$, no exploits were used to farm dungeons, events or gain value, no server switching was used to gather materials. (except to find an unbugged and unlocked temple of Balthazar)

Highlights

25 aug : Pre-release launch
27 aug : Level 80 reached
30 aug : 100% World Completion, Gift of Exploration
30 aug - 3 sept : Time-out
- Gathering gold and clues in preparation of the craft -
6 sept : Mystic Clovers discovered
9 sept : Dawn crafted from the Mystic Forge
- Search for the last two unknown parameters in our Recipe.. -
11 sept : Gift of Magic and Gift of Might discovered. Found the final missing number of 77 clovers required.
Our recipe is now complete - several days before it was discovered publicly.
15 sept : Gaining levels / skill points is too slow. Deleted character and made a new one with the same name. All but Dungeon Tokens and Bloodstone Shard are Account-bound. Levelled back to 80 through crafting and skill challenges is fast.
16 sept : Finally 77 Mystic Clovers created, Gift of Fortune is crafted - No more RNG! :-)
- Several days of Karma farming and Dungeon running -
19 sept : Dungeon runs done, Gift of Light and Gift of Sunrise crafted
22 sept : Finished farming ALL the materials, including Karma. Temple of Balthazar event is bugged!
- Lots of waiting -
25 sept: Temple of Balthazar is unbugged. Got all my Obsidian Shards. Stacking them is bugged.
- Even more waiting -
2 oct: Dawn + Gift of Sunrise + Gift of Mastery + Gift of Fortune is combined to create Sunrise.

In the process we’ve created tools to keep track and visualize the puzzle:

Posted Image

The recipe itself is amazing, taking pieces from all over the world. I’d estimate the total cost including RNG over 400-500g, 1 mil karma and 400 skill points. If you are working toward your own, remember there is only a low chance a Mystic Clover will be crafted from the Mystic Forge. Other results can be 10-50 Tier 6 materials, Orichalcum Ingots, Mystic Coins, Obsidian Shards, Lodestones, Hidden Treasures, Crystals and Philosopher Stones! Some of the other materials are very tricky to obtain, such as the Lodestones, the Legendary Base weapon and all those Mystic Coins.

OH MY GOD! I just watched the video that other guy posted and was very disappointed in how it looked but after seeing your vid with different angles, HOLY SHIT! I CANT WAIT TILL I GET MINE!! I have dawn, gift of light and gift of metal so i still have 250g or so left until I have the mats gathered but damn, i will be holding this thing in 2-3 months, it is definitely worth the grind, so freakin sexy.

Congratz, really nice weapon! :D

As someone who only reached lv 76 today it's really sad to think about, I guess it'll take 2 years to finally get a legendary weapon for me xD.

grats on your hard work paying off.  glad you uploaded this video, makes me like it a bit more.  the other video's effects were always an ugly shade of red, completely turning me off of this weapon.

I still like twilight better though

I've added 4 more beautiful screenshots to the post. Enjoy.
To see all the textures I recommend you to meet someone with the sword ingame.
These screenshots don't show everything, sadly.

Honestly it's just depressing to me. I still kind of like the Legendary weapons, but don't have the drive it would take to obtain all of those mats now (it was much easier right after launch, but I had to leave for a while and now it's nearly impossible to afford the rest with all the nerfs and the current state of the economy). I still feel ArenaNet should make the Legendary weapons FEEL more obtainable (without making them actually easier to get, I'd be fine with an illusion ^_^).

Congratz.

There are still good methods to make gold in this game, I work full time 8 hours a day and go to the gym after work for an hour and I still manage to get 10g per day on a week day, and about 20g on weekends (30g if i play all day). However there are no longer any methods (afaik) to be making 200g over the weekends since the market has stabilized but you really don't need to be making that much, I will have sunrise in 3 months tops and then add on another 4 months for twilight to craft eternity, it is actually not THAT bad.

Obviously. Why else would there be an option to filter for legendary items in the trading post? :)

Wow, I'm almost speechless. The sword is considerably prettier than seen in the previous video. I had no idea that it made the owner's footsteps to become images of a clear sky, the effect is incredible.

Congrats on the weapon and congrats on the amazing video, I wish we had one of those for each Legendary.

This.

I think me, and you are how the majority of the population feels about legendaries in this game. I love me some MMO's, but since this game is completely F2P after purchasing it, it kind of relinquishes the need for grinding. Take WoW for instance. I hate that game with a passion, but people have played it daily for years on end. This game isn't like that (well it may be for some people). You can accomplish everything in the game within 3 weeks of buying it, with the exception of crafting legendaries. This doesn't feel like a game that you play year after year after year, days on end. This just feels like a hold-me-over game until something else good comes out. A game where you play it, then leave, and come back to it later.

So most people just don't feel the need to craft legendaries. There isn't any real end-game content as of this point whether people say there is or isn't. The games fun, don't get me wrong. But the only people who probably stick long term to this game, or play consistently, or the guild wars 1 fans. The game as it sits now, isn't playable long term in my opinion.

Honestly, I don't think it's worth it.

The time required with the current Diminishing Returns for farming make this damn near impossible unless you are playing like 16+ hours a day for months on end (if you are just one person). If it didn't require a sigificant gold investment I'd say sure ok, because Karma is easy enough to obtain with enough work. But the gold required is just, insane. I've been saving up for Commander since Day 1 of Headstart and I'm only at 52g today, with bare minimal purchases for upgrades once I hit 80. At best if I do nothing but farm in a day, I can make about 5-6 gold. At best. And that's moving around every 30 minutes to avoid the anti-bot code from applying DR to drop rate. All for 100g.

Now imagine as a solo player doing this for a Legendary, which is the same exact stats as a level 80 Exotic but obviously with a much cooler visual. It's staggering.

The key factor of mmo design is the carrot and stick method, your basic game theory. If you want people to play your game over the long haul you need incentive. Yet you need those incentives to be realistic goals the player believes they can achieve in a certain time span. While that might be different per player, many of us do not want to treat this as a second job and work god knows how many hours, every day, every week for months on end to obtain one single item.

Until the restrictions of DR are lifted, or there are alternate means to aqquire the needed objects for a Legendary, then many of us will not bother with them.

Your post has a hint of the "poor me" syndrome. For that reason I say to you and many of the other gamers, grow up mate!

As to not come off as a troll, I offer the following advice. Adventuring is only one of the ways one can earn in-game currency. Have you considered getting some of that 52g working for you? Perhaps by crafting items to sell on the TP?

I for one craft items for auction before I head out to adventure. Making money while I make more money is what its about, smart people do that.

I have already asked this on another thread, but as this is the legendary I'm aiming for I thought that I might as well ask here too.
I just got the pre-weapon "Dawn", so my question is, can I just use it as a weapon, soulbound and everything? Because I have weaponsmithing on other character so just wondering if there is any issues with me soulbinding dawn or it doesn't matter, :/ I'm just paranoid of scew-ups.

The final legendary weapon is "Soulbind on equip," so in the end it wouldn't matter all that much.  As for your weaponsmithing concerns, the Gift of Light is bound to your account, so it will be transferrable to your other toon.

First , great job the sword looks very very cool.
Second, to all the people who complain about the effort .... gee it is a legendary therefore is more like a status symbol than anything else, ofcoz it require some hard work and effort. The point is legendary is doable, require a lot of effort, time and resources. But isn't it the point? If everyone able to run around with it, it won't be a legend anymore.

Personally do I want one .. sure. Will I admire if someone in my guild/group have one ... sure. Will I put in the time and effort into making one .. most likely not. If it come on to sale on trader board with a affordable cost .. sure I will buy one.

just my 0.02

As to not come off as a troll, I offer the following advice. Adventuring is only one of the ways one can earn in-game currency. Have you considered getting some of that 52g working for you? Perhaps by crafting items to sell on the TP?

I for one craft items for auction before I head out to adventure. Making money while I make more money is what its about, smart people do that.

Crafting does not appear from my testing to be a lucrative practice for earning currency.

The same as playing the TP; Sure, you may be able to buy up some items and sell them at a higher price to turn a profit depending upon the day to day ups and downs. However your "profit" is so small compared to the time you wait that you could easily have been out in the wild so to speak earning that same amount easily and more. Crafting is about the same, once you factor in the time to get the mats to create stuff, put it on the market, sell it to get your "profit" it's time better spent elsewhere. Especially when you consider you'd need to craft in mass quantities to turn a profit worthwhile.

There is just no legitmate way in GW2 to earn gold at a reasonable rate. I say reasonable because I do not mind at all, putting in the time to go farm something. And for that time, getting a solid profit that shows the amount of work and time put in. Not a few extra silver or copper for flipping items on the TP, or a few extra for crafting items I'd need to spend time getting mats for. They already nerfed running dungeons, they're nerfing running DE's. There's only a handful of end game crafting mats you can gather (mainly ores) that have very limited nodes in the three Orr zones with very long respawn wait times. Coupled with high traveling costs for waypoints, high costs for armor repairs, so on and so forth it's a miracle that in 30+ days time I've luckily amassed 52g.

Keep in mind I'm NOT saying give us instant gratification. I do not mind doing the work required. I like doing the work required because it shows I did. But as said before it has to be a reasonable amount of work. When you put the carrot and the stick out in front of the player, that player has to eventually be able to reach the carrot in a time frame before they finally just say "screw it I'm done" and move on. Sadly unlike other mmorpg's, since GW1 and GW2 do not imploy any subscription model and ArenaNet already has our money from the box sale there's no incentive for them to change things compared to a sub based mmorpg company who needs you to continue spending that $15 a month. I'm not quitting or giving up on GW2 by a long shot but at this point in the game it's really becoming not fun to spend 4+ hours a day "kill this mob for 30 minutes, move over to this location, kill this mob for 30 minutes, move to another location" which even applies to DE's really since you need to not repeat the same chains.

And sadly the other alternatives just do not pan out. They either require a siginicant up front cost for very little return that you could get elsewhere, or not even an equal return. I've been keeping my eye on Gem price flucation. It's at about what, 40s for 125 gems at the moment give or take. Even if the price rose to say 45s tomorrow and I bought a ton of Gems now, the return on that investment is a fraction of what I could earn by simply going out and farming, even with the anti-bot code.

I'd love to get my hands on the Legendary Bifrost, but between getting Commander, and getting a full set of level 80 exotic armor plus accesories it's really an unattainable goal.
