What you are asking here is to have your favourite class to be able to use a weapon that doesnt fit it, forcing it, just because greatswords are great and they look badass.
Once again, it looks forced.
Oh and the skill are pretty unbalanced imo.

my vote goes to Dagger or 1h-Mace. Both would match the Engineer-Character exceptionally well.
In RL im an engineer and I never go anywhere without my knife

Somewhat unrelated, but honestly, I thought Engineer should have been a heavy armor class. Why wear medium armor? We're not rangers or thieves, agility shouldn't matter if you're an ENGINEER. You don't need mobility if you're an ENGINEER. Why forsake the extra armor for mobility that you're not going to use?

I'll concede, maybe GS isn't the best choice of an "ancient" weapon to give the Engi, but I'd love to have the option

Tank turrets, pls.
Turrets are just immobile minions right now.

Even then, it doesn't make much sense to give them a melee weapon, and greatsword at that!
Stupid Stupid Stupid.

Greatsword engineer? C'mon, man.
What next? Focus on a warrur so you can ding your enemies with a mighty cowbell?

Come to think of it, I'd say any melee weapon with a reasonable skill set would fit engi, however, they'd need to have very specific skins to fit the class theme - therefore it would be much more suitable to have them as Kit skills rather than stand-alone weapons. The most harmless way to put this into the game (imo) would be making these special weapons part of the Supply Crate drop.

Remember the engineer is about technology, so of the current weapons, the only ones I could see the engineer wielding are the torch, and maybe the dagger as a utility knife.
I think for the torch it would just be like any of the other three classes, skill 4 applies some type of burning or maybe aoe blind + burning like the mesmer skill and skill 5 could be another source of burning, maybe "Elixir-Infused Napalm" igniting napalm with your torch, and it could work like the guardian cleansing flame except instead of curing conditions, grants some boom, or grants some random boon. This skills would also have some nice synergy with flamethrower enthusiast.
The dagger I'm not so sure, but like mentioned above, it could follow a utility-knife theme. Maybe offhand-only.

other than skins, I really don't understand why you would ever want to use a greatsword on this profession. I could understand an argument for "tanks" (turrets with movement), but really you have 4 kits plus rifle or pistol/pistol or pistol/shield. I've never wanted any different weapons on my engineer, and that's through the end of the personal story. The whole idea feels forced beyond belief.
the whole profession is based on technology. technology increases range because melee is dangerous. so why go backwards on technology on a profession based around it?

Epic! I want a mighty cowbell! Or maybe a Wile E. Coyote style mallet. After all, "if it doesn't work, use a bigger hammer."

1hnd mace would be cool , make it work like ranger's axe in just the sense it would be a ranged wpn or least have a option of being able to throw it.
Engi are a great mid ranged class , would be nice to have more of an option or a kit that could put us at 1200+ range , Like a nail gun! lol , like #5 ability you unload a spree of nails in the air or even at your target.. Grease gun! Where you could shoot the group with a big glob of grease and it will snare / make ppl fall down , another ability could be you cover the target in grease and now burning does like 50% more dmg or something like that. So we can play on our own combo fields.
But Gs would be kinda fun thing to see but would feel wierd.
