Hi people,

I am wondering what alternatives there are to "white" and "black" when what you want is .. well .. white and black

As far as I understood from some posts, white and black will give you colors so deep you don't see any texture anymore - so what would be a very bright and very dark alternative withouth those side effects?

Also: does anyone use gold and / or silver and could post a screenie?

Midnight Ice is a very dark blueish colour, almost black.  And there's also a white colour in the rare group that's not white but is very white.  I can't remember the name of it!

Black - Charcoal : Good on cloth, okay on medium, fair on heavy.
White - Fog : Fair overall

Celestial is the one true white in the game, White is just fair IMO.

I got Ivory Dye a while back, and on most materials it looks like a "warm" white. Since I have natural colors on my ranger, I think Ivory fits it better than other stark whites.

With black, there are a lot of "Midnight ____ Dye" colors that are very close. Depending on your outfit, you could probably find one that would look better than a true black.

Blue Ice is my favorite "white" dye that's not Celestial or White.

I haven't found a cheap alternative to black yet.  It seems like the closest ones are rare and expensive.

I have a nice black one, called Oil Slick. It's black on most armor, but it can make brownish.

Icing dye is very white. It perhaps has a tint of grey on it, but I can't spot it really. As for blacks, Abyss and Midnight Fire are also very black dyes, while the real "black" dye actually is more like grey in my eyes.

Midnight Ice is pure black from what ive seen. Abyss is black aswell. as for white ive found Frosting is the closest to white that I have, minus the White dye itself heh., I have ancient silver but that has a yellow undertone.

So could anyone also help me with same dye problem? I'm interested in the closest to black & white dye for heavy armor . Maybe get some screenshots too if anyone has something like that.

No, it's not pure black.  It has a blueish cast over it.   But you only see it when the light hits it at certain angles.  It's a very nice colour.

That's probably the one...   I have two white ice colours that are very close to each other.  One is rare, the other common.  The common one is slightly more blueish....

(why do some dyes have that star in your screenshot?)

my first dye from Official launch, from the unidentified dye was the midnight ice dye.
You can imagine me staring at the dye for hours wondering what the heck was going on.
But thats my story anyway.....

White: i personally like rose white/celestial/sea white. I forgot the 1st and last dye's full name, but it has a very distinctive white colour. Rose been white with a slight pink in it. I also use lemon tint along with these 3 whites. They look really good and i always wear these dyes...

I have tarnished silver on my heavy armor and it looks pretty white. Not sure how it looks on medium or light.

I spent 5.5g on dyes and none of it went to anything Black or White.

The stars denote their selection as a favorite. You are able to select favorites in a customized section at the top of the dye selection screen. The dyes you have selected will then be marked with a star.

Celestial is very good on heavy armour if you're going for white, you can see all the textures through it and it shines as you would expect light coloured metal to. I believe it's the second most expensive dye on the TP though, in case money is an issue; it's a rare dye, so you have to be pretty lucky/persistant to get it drop.

There is a "pitch" dye to that is blackish on some armors.

I got my Abyss dye last night, and I've been using White Gold as a white substitute.

I have a dye that is Powder Blue (i think thats the name) and I use it on my Heavy Human armor and people always ask me what white dye I use. There is absolutely no blue tint to it at all. I don't have screenies cause I am at work.

As others have mentioned, some of the "Ice" colors of dye offer a suitable alternative to white.  One of my characters has the "Lime Ice" color and it looks quite good, especially when used as a white along side various green or cyan colors.  Another character has the "Peach Ice" dye and it looks good when used along side various red or orange colors.  What's best is that some of these "Ice" colors are commons, making them significantly easier to obtain and vastly more affordable to buy from the Trading Post.

darks:  midnight [x] is usually almost black, with some shades around the edge.  Midnight Fire has some red highlights on my current armor, but it also looks brown on some pieces.

lights: [x] ice is usually a lighter version of the color that gets close to white with some highlights/slightly off color of white.

You can get cheapo versions that cost about anywhere from a few coppers to about 3-5 silvers if you're broke:


Midnight olive is a almost black color with a almost undectable green hue,
and depending on the type of armor you're dyeing, it can look black

Blue ice is a whitish slightly silvery blueish color, it's looks almost white if your armor is not blueish
(if it's a blue color than the blue ice looks more blue, so it's good to use with others colors)

Cheaper alternatives:
Peach ice is a whiteish color with slight peach tone,
it's good for the blue armor colors that don't look good with blue ice dye

Citrus ice dye is a whiteish yellowish color, and another good alternative


And those are what I'm using currently, since I need to save money for other things (trait books, gah)

I love my Thief, personally... because the standard "Ebony" dye is a rather good alternative for pure black.
