I...want...so...much
The site, robertsspaceindustries.com is currently down due to the massive influx of people wanting to find out more, but it's well worth a check out. The team are doing this sans publisher and going down a crowdsourcing route. So if you're as excited by the prospect of this game as i am, throw some money at your screen (them)!
If you want to check if your computer will run GW2, check here.
If you find out you can't and need to think about upgrading or building another, check here.

I never played Wing Commander or Freelancer, but having come from a Freespace background, and having respect for the impact those two games made on the genre.....
*gets teary eyed*
I... I thought these works of glorious art were extinct!

I virtually grew up with Wing Commander and Privateer games and spent hundreds of hours on Freelancer, so even if the game was half as ambitious I'd be thrilled to play another Chris Roberts game. I don't doubt his intentions, vision or talent, but what he's proposing seems like a really tall order to me. I fear he may be overstretching his bounds heavily, as well as placing too much faith in gamers today - Those of us who loved his games will be behind him 100%, but will we be enough to make this dream come true?
I am definitely going to pledge - unfortunately due to the situation in my country I'm in a bad financial state despite having a job and can't pledge more than the initial 8 Euro. I wish I could go for the 30 Euro pledge (I really want to see this project realized!) but I'd rather be prudent.
To be honest... I wouldn't care even if the graphics were slightly better than good old Freelancer. Having played games since the mid-late 80s they really are not important to me as long as there is a consistent and tasteful aethetic and atmosphere to the game. But everything else excites me a lot... It sounds like the game I always dreamt of in every respect, but always dismissed as a utopian fantasy (I think I'd even made a post in a "describe your dream MMO" thread a while back). If it comes true... Holy crap...
Help me Chris Roberts... You're my only hope! Also, shut up and take my money!
Edit: And THANKS to The Comfy Chair for posting this - you really made my day! First ArenaNet makes an MMORPG that includes many things I always missed in MMOs, now Chris Roberts reads my mind. Yay!

Been waiting for freelancer 2 for years now, can't wait for this game.
I have one issue though with these pledges system, one of the pledges is like 10,000 bucks and all of the pledges give different titles and items upon release of the game, I don't like how people who pay more money will get things in the game not available to other players.
If the pledge items are available through in game playing methods then fine, but if there not then I really hate the pledge system there running. I am not willing to pay anything until its confirmed we can get these titles and in game items without paying 10,000 bucks.

I think that what Leyana mentioned in her (his?) above post is correct... Logically there will be equivalent ships but the skins will be unique to the people that pledged.
Also, Roberts mentioned Guild Wars 2 as far as the money is concerned... Which leads me to believe that he wants to follow ANet's model to an extent. We'll see.

Not a subscription but not free-to-play; rather a hybrid of these two business models. Much like ArenaNet's Guild Wars 2, you will purchase the PC game and pay no recurring subscription charges. Your purchase of the game will allow you to play in the universe for free, forever! The game will offer a variety of virtual items for purchase with in-game credits allowing you to spend money on items that offer more ways to express yourself, provide convenience, and customize your experience. But the cardinal rule regarding "in-game purchases" is: Players who spend money purchasing in-game credits will have no advantage over players who spend time!
Everything is bought with in-game credits. These purchases won't offer any advantage over someone who puts in the "game-time" to earn the same amount of credits. You might ask, why have "in-game" purchases at all? This allows us the resources to support the game on an ongoing basis as well as continually add content.

Freelancer wasn't only one of my favorite game of the last 10 years but is also the only space game I ever liked for the simple fact that it didn't try to replicate reality and was very immersive.
From the video it seems like music will be similar too, which is very good!
I really can't wait to play.

They just started a kickstarter way of pledging aswell as the main site, they have passed 1 million dollars so they game will definetly be made.
YAY!!! Only thing now is to try to get to 6 million dollars to speed up devolepment and create a full immersive open universe type game with everything we want in it. If they only get 2 million then we still get that just it will take alot longer.

I kinda remember the Freelancer hype... And yeah compared to what was promised it was pretty underwhelming (specifically for me most of the planets were very boring, the non plot central NPCs and dialog were very generic and the ships and weapons had little flavor), but I learned to love it for what it did offer - namely the addicting combat, awesome and rewarding space exploration and good sense of progression.
I'm hoping to get paid soon so I can at least pledge 8 Euros.

Yes that was microsofts fault, they forced rushed release and after they cut finding once game was launched. Digital Anvil the team creating the game sufffered because of it. Is probably why he is going crowd funding this time to avoid politics and publishers causing problems, they will be making this game 100% sure.
