so is the main story the same no matter what? i know the first game had a good story and great amount of lore. to get all the lore will i have to play as every race or can i just pick whichever race looks the best to me?

It basically goes...
- First few missions based on choice A in character creation (say blood/iron/ash legions for charrs, your social class as humans etc.)
- Next few on choice B (so for charrs it would be who your father is, humans your regret etc.)
- Few missions to introduce you to and choose faction depending on what race (species?) you are
- At this point all races converge and personal story develops based on which faction you chose (same for all races)
- Around level 65-70, forget what exactly, story for everyone comes together and the parts in Orr are the same for everyone.
So yeah first maybe 20 levels are different for every race (with each race having a possible of 9 different combinations of story based on choices in character creation). After that there are three different paths (one for each faction).
Hope that's kind of clear and helps a bit.

generally the story lays out as follows:
-0 to 10: based off of your first racial choice (charr legion, etc.)
-10 to 20: based off of second choice (norn drunk at moot or lost an heirloom, etc.)
-20 to 30: race-based introduction to the orders (revolves around dredge for norn)
-30 to 40: order quests revolving around the order itself
-40 to 50: finishing order quests around picking a "less developed race," orr attacks
-50 to 60: trahearne intro, finishing up with order
-60 to 70: form pact, get ready to assault orr
-70 to 80: pact formed, assault orr
as you can see, after level 30 the storys start converging, and after level 50 they are all basically on the same track. there are some variations at the end depending on orders and other picks at creation, but really they are mostly the same.
I've only done norn so far, but I've really enjoyed it, especially the "got really drunk at a moot" side story

so basically, for a lore geek like myself, play every race until around 20 or 30 and from there just play whichever class you had the most fun with because your race will no longer be a factor?

Pretty much from what I've seen. I've got a Charr, Asura, and Norn all higher than 30 and once you get the quest to go visit whatever order you chose your race is basically irrelevant storyline-wise. I still run into NPCs that react to my race accordingly (first time visiting Ebonhawke was as a Charr hah) still and that can still be amusing, but no real lore.

if you truly wanted to experience everything, you would have to play through 30 with each race to see the pre-order quests, but essentially yes. there are slight variations in the end quests depending on previous quest choices and order choice, but for the most part there is little to no variation after level 30.
