Why do you all still play this game?

Also, I don't see any compelling reason to play structured pvp over a moba like Dota 2, which does what GW2 is trying to do much better.

If you wanted insight on to what motivates us to play, there's a lot. Personally I love sPvP, you're right in that it has similarities to an MOBA game where everyone is equal, but the fundamental gameplay is different. The fact that there is no gear treadmill means that matches are won through co-ordination and skill and not because the other side spent 150 more hours on farming gear. I think that kind of disparity in advantages should never rear its head into PvP.
WvW is fun if you're in a WvW-oriented guild, because more or less you have guild reputations on the line. Just read the WvW threads here, all that drama, all those tears. Tasty.
For me personally in PvE, in all MMO's, I wanted to look great, look awesome, in which I did in other MMO's. But to be trivialised with new content every 6 months, that was a deal breaker. This doesn't happen in GW2, which is just perfect in my books.
So I guess that this game does work for certain individuals out there, and it will be those that continue to play. I don't think or feel that everyone should be compelled to play. If it's not your cup of tea, then I hope you find somewhere nicer to bust your time

This is the only reason anyone should continue playing any game.

I did, actually: Each exploration done is progression for me. Not every game needs to be about stat progression. If a game without stat progression isn't your thing, that's fine, go play one that is about it. Kinda like people like me, who dropped games about stat progression because that's not our thing. We go for games like GW2 instead.
Variety is a good thing.

That's just being an a--hole... and the Internet already has plenty of them.
So for those of you who respond to this post with "good, don't play then", you're welcome.

EDIT: @ above post, its just that it feels like I've wasted 60 dollars, sure you could say, I've had 60 hours of "entertainment" out of it, but I don't think I was having fun for the large majority of the time, I was kind of waiting for things to ramp up, and get exciting, but all the drops remained lame, all the content remained brain-dead easy, etc.

so whenever I don't get bored to death just by sitting at LA for 3 mins I'll probably start doing them.
game's not bad but I don't feel much motivation to do anything lately.
sPvP gets boring after 30-60 minutes.
Dungeons, even though I still have to try CM, SE, HotW and arah, I don't feel like doing them.
Gearing up, I feel so disappointed by missing chances to make money that I just cannot be bothered anymore. I bought 20x orange dyes for 2s before the event, there was a point where they costed 28s but I said myself like the idiot I am "I'll wait a bit more". and now they are 5s. I'm just useless to sell / resell and play the market. Bought 2 severed dagger skins for 3.9g each, now they are like 2.5g. I should have seen this coming but no. Now the only thing I hope is that those skins remain rare enough by the end of the event so I can at least sell them for 10g in some months. If I thought of buying a greatsword skin in the 23rd morning, I would be so rich by now, but no.
I mean, what am I supposed to do when I log in? Leveling an alt is completely pointless. Why do I want to reach 80 just to be in the same position than my main?
Log to farm nodes and orr? fun.
Or to do the lame act I events? I got bored within 10 minutes.
I'm not a hater and I enjoyed the 200~ first hours of this game, specially when I was leveling my main. But now that nothing's new anymore, I find myself having little to no fun everytime I convince myself of logging in.

"I remember in WoW I had all this blingin' gear at like lvl 15".
And what did u do with that ?
U threw it away at level 20.
It seems like you are very focussed on gear / looks.
Well, just like any other mmo, the gear u find till like level 70 is intermediate, like u throw it away as soon as u get something better.
There is very nice looking armor/weapons, check the legendaries and dungeonarmors etc.
There is a lot to do imo in this game and a lot i like.
I like the exploration, the satisfaction it gives fully exploring a map (and getting a reward for it btw).
I like the jumping puzzles.
Doing ungeons, especially the harder explorables, are with a guild group very fun.
Then there is PvP.
Guess this just isnt the game for u mate.

For me I guess it's because GW2 has a lot of potential still, and once the pvp gets more balanced out I will give it a shot. And despite the awful current state of WvW it's still pretty fun. And I haven't played an MMO in a while and like playing the market now and then.
If you're diehard PvE with no desire for PvP, yeah this game is gonna bore the hell out of you soon enough, just like GW1 would have.

Obviously, this will be a very personal answer, so it will not cover everyone's feelings and probably clash with your own views of what is fun in a game and what isn't.
- The mobility of combat. The game mechanics push you to think about positioning, movement and dodge timing. This adds an extra layer of complexity which compensates for the limited skillbar. yes, there are times I press "1" 5 times and things die, but the times where I pressed "1" 5 times and stood perfectly still for those 5 seconds are almost non-existant. There is always some kind of effort involved, be it skill activation, timely dodging or repositioning.
- The downgearing keeps you on your toes. Running in full Exotic in starter areas makes thrash mobs a cakewalk, but don't sleep on Veterans and Champions. This means that there is challenge to be found in every zone of the game.
- Exploration is encouraged. Many mechanics (including the zergy-ness of overcrowded Dynamic Events) push people to go off the beaten path, discovering small secrets, from hidden jumping puzzles to some small real-world or GW1 reference. Discovering these is a great experience.
- Tournament PvP relies heavily on co-ordination, so winning matches with the guild provides a great feeling of accomplishment. Why play this over a MOBA? Because none of my guildies plays MOBA's but they all play GW2. GW2 is easier to get into, since the basic mechanics can be discovered in PvE. MOBA's are notoriously complicated for complete newbies, which puts off a lot of people.
- Many people rip Hot-join PvP for being imbalanced. I love it. It's the chaos and imbalance of it all that make me want to play wacky profession/weapon combos. When I'm tired of the min/maxing of tournaments I can relax and have some casual fun with a weapon combo I rarely use.
- WvW is great and IMO, provides a great deal of variety depending on your mood of the day. You can start ninja-capping supply camps in a party of 5, join the zerg to take over keeps and towers or run security/scouting duty. There is always something usefull to do in WvW and receiving the gratitude of the commanders gives a great feeling of accomplishment.

also, are we playing the same game? you get tons of xp for doing your professional story, crafting and wvw.

I don't play in the zerg. That's how. See, I usually run around with 2-3 other people at most. This takes this problem out entirely. Yes, the zerg is indeed not fun. Which is why you can just go where the zerg isn't, and find things the Zerg will never see.
And how you can claim this game to be minddumbingly easy outside of the Zerg, and yet praise WoW, is entirely beyond me. Objectively, GW2 *is* harder than WoW. It just doesn't have artificial gear barriers or sheduling needed.
But hey. If you don'*t enjoy the game, that's fine. A lot of people buy games that they don't end up enjoying. I bought FF8 long ago, and hated the game. It happens.

This pretty much. it's why I enjoy both Skyrim and GW2, and consider them to be very similar (just that, for me personally, GW2 improves on the "formula" due to jumping puzzles)

Why do I have fun? Because I don't follow the zerg. I even try to stay away from those. I like to kick some Champion around, with just my friend and maybe one or two strangers. There's nothing more satisfying as killing that group boss, with a group of 2. I try to climb every single mountain I find. I follow every caravan I meet on the way to see him to safety. I try to follow every conversation between NPC's I come across.
Oh, and I sometimes even get a nice drop.

Fun is basically a non-answer that people who can't quantify things very well usually echo back with so I won't use that b/c I'm actually confident in an ability to see holistic composition. I think it.... gives a progressive task (exploring vast new geometry, acquiring components) that is Relaxing and very wide-open, while having a much more cohesive pacing than your standard derp sessions in LOL or your Tryhard sessions in valve's very competitive CC fest varient. Those are fine games too for people who like to grind the same bots day after day after day or complicate their PvP /w rock-scissors-dynamite. But the scenery in them never changes even if the fights all feel like they're happening in different contexts all the time. It really comes down to how one seeks validation. Do you prefer getting lost in Theorycraft & minmaxxing as opposed to the actual grounding reality of practical application in a more nuanced environment?
The strategies are still the same. Even the gameplay can be similar. The combat has plenty of depth as well. Anet just did such an exhaustive job of boiling everything down and stripping away certain Skinner-Box elements that a lot of people honestly think they're playing an inferior product simply b/c it doesn't stimulate compulsion centers the same way. To someone like me who always recognized those elements and felt them directly in other games, it doesn't feel any different here. To people who interpret the skinnerian illusion of other games as "Immersion", spending 7 years playing GW1 off and on, would have been unthinkable as well yet I did... I think all of us who did and still play this, subscribe to a different validation structure entirely, especially us PvE'ers. (in my case, associative structure based on predictable outcomes to serve other players instead of direct competitive achievement or "gamble-raiding").
It's inherent, I don't think there is any "aha moments" where someone can just enjoy a certain playstyle that they never liked before unless they were already taking steps to change their whole lifestyle and the way they approach their own motives. If it happens at all, then it's probably over time & due to them just getting older or more mature. ...or the even more likely answer: some people have been directly conditioned against making that transition back to more simplified stimuli
