Hi all,
i've spent some time playing with both a guardian and a warrior to level 80, i like them both but often in WvWvW i feel like it's the "realm" of ranged classes and it's quite hard to go in melee when there is a rain of fire all around me
I'd like to play a thief or a ranger to try something new with pistols and short/long bows, what could be better between ranger and thief?
i'm looking for something that could be fun even when i'm not in party

Warrior is better than Thief in ranged combat, well, at least on par.

I played a warrior and just switched to a thief and like it much better for WvWvW. You can still play melee and when things get rough get out safely. There's also a pretty decent ranged build that hits pretty hard if you want to play ranged and again you'll never die and if you do is because you made a mistake.

Not if you are fighting multiple enemies. Shortbow has the most powerful ranged AoE skill in the game.

No it doesn't. 2nd best, maybe. Travel time acts as an effective barrier against calling the most powerful anything. It hits like a truck for sure, but a drunk amputee can dodge those bombs... slowest travel time imaginable, just sort of slowly drifts through the air towards its target... anyone who knows there are enemies nearby and isn't caught completely offguard can simply RP walk out of the way.

I wouldn't change a thing about it though! I'm not complaining, I very much apreciate its pros and cons, I love its versatility and functionality. But you reeaally do gotta admit its crazy easy to avoid at long range. The closer you are the more likely it'll hit, because it travels less distance, and might actually require a dodge roll in semi close-mid range sometimes to avoid.

Considering that, I just don't see how it could really be called the most powerful ranged aoe skill in game.

Perhaps, but Longbow isn't terrible either.

I would really avoid Ranger if you play WvW. The combination of Piercing Arrows and pets makes one of, if not the worst, WvW profession right now, and from now on since I doubt Anet will fix pets in the next 6 months.

I have both a Warrior and a Thief. I have to say Thief is a thousand time funner for me. I always favor Thieves in MMO's because I like the agility and stealth they offer, it just fits my play-style. I originally started the Warrior cause since I haven't used a plated class in a long time, I wanted to try one out. But really Warrior just seems so boring to play. I might even use my Warriors Gift of Exploration so I can get 2 legendary daggers on my Thief It sounds totally crazy to pass up Twilight, but why put in all that work to a class I consider to be boring.

Give a Thief a try if you want to try some totally different than your plate classes. Not to mention they have tons of utility for getting out of trouble.

i'm back after a few days without PC, anyway i've played thief 2 days now and i'm liking it, i have no idea how to put traits or what i'm doing most of the time but i'll be reading this forum often now

Traits won't really be a huge issue until you can get the tier 2 trait lines, really.  The first 10 points column helps, no doubt, but the good stuff happens at 60 IIRC.  For now, I'd experiment with different weapon sets.  FInd a play style you like most, but remember what each weapon configuration is best at through trial and error.

Pretty much every single build should go with the power trait line from levels 11-20 because the stats make such a big difference at those levels, imo.

i hit 80 yesterday
now i'm reading the forum to find some useful information, i'm now 0/30/20/20/0 but i don't know what are the target stats i should check:
i mean, for example, how much crit% should i have? how many HP? armor?
IIRC right now i have a little more 18K HP with like 45% crit chance.
i've played most of the time dual daggers and i tried also dagger/pistol or dual pistol as a second set, now i have shortbow for WvWvW.

I think going critical strikes is also a viable option.
