ArenaNet is asking for the Guild Wars 2 community to help test some FOV changes that should benefit widescreen users.

Quote

To help test, you’ll need to add a special command line to your GW2 client’s shortcut. Here’s how:
  • Create a shortcut to your GW2 client (right-click -> “Create Shortcut”)
  • Right-click the GW2 client shortcut
  • Click “Properties”
  • Locate text field labeled “Target.”

It should contain the file path of your shortcut, and will look something like this:C:\Games\Gw2\Gw2.exe
  • Type -testVerticalFov at the end of the Target line

Be sure to include a space between .exe and -test. The line should look like this: C:\Games\Gw2\Gw2.exe -testVerticalFov

Please note that your Target line may or may not have quotation marks. If it does have quotation marks, this tag should go outside of them. So it will look like this: “C:\Games\Gw2\Gw2.exe” -testVerticalFov
  • Once the command line has been added, click Apply -> OK.
  • That’s it! Jump in and play with this new setting, and post your feedback in the following thread: https://forum-en.gui...irst#post551648
If at any time you want to return to the old FOV, simply remove the –testVerticalFov from your target line and it’ll return to normal.

A very decent start. Well, at least I hope this isn't everything they have in store in terms of addressing this issue.

The Red is what I see without FOV, yes I know it's slightly off but I just wanted to give people an idea of the difference between the two. Camera is at max distance on all shots.

I took a before and after screenshot and I'm seeing absolutely no difference. Might be the area I'm in or just outright not working for everyone.

Figured it out. It didn't work for me on Windowed Full screen. I chose that because it was faster to alt-tab. World exploration is boring the hell out of me so I usually stick on a DVD and switch at parts that I know have less talking and more action.

Anyway, switched to regular full screen and the FoV enhanced slightly.

Much nicer now.  At first I didn't notice a difference, but then I turned it back off, logged in with two posts at the edges and it really made a big difference.

How can a difference of 10%-20% be important at all? Apart from seeing a little bit more, its not that big of a deal for me...

If it does not work with Windowed Full Screen then it is of no use for me - I want the ease and the enjoyment of watching a second screen; however it's a start and Anet will continue to improve a great game.

Dont like the fact that it doesnt work in Windowd Fullscreen, but trying it in a regular screen and it looks good.  Only real problem I had was it caused all voices to sound very raspy, which I thought was wierd.  When I removed the line the voices returned to normal.

Its a start.. What Id like is:

1. FoV slider.
2. Camera centered above your head, not at your back.
3. Allow zooming in to first person view.

+1

Huh, strange, I use Windowed Fullscreen and its the same as normal Fullscreen. Maybe the patch fixed it?

FWIW I only got around to trying this today, but it is indeed working (confirmed via screenshot before and after restart to add it) on my setup with a 1680x1050 monitor using Windowed Fullscreen.

I don't have any other switches on my GW2 commandline.
My other monitor is at 1280x1024 resolution.
The widescreen I play on is the Primary Display in Windows 7 64-bit
with an nVidia GTX 560 Ti 448 Core GPU
on 306.97 drivers.

Those for whom it's not working may want to report what's different from my setup.

I agree with all of those. I am so happy ArenaNet (finally) came around with this - it's an excellent start.

The height of the camera pivot (in your point 2) impacts what you can see in the vertical field of view quite a lot, because not only does your character obstruct your view less when it's higher, it also allows you to look "up" and "forward" more comfortably because you don't get issues with the camera colliding with the ground.

The higher the pivot, the move environment fills up your vertical field of view. Strangely enough, in Guild Wars 2 alone, you can get a slight over-the-head cam option if you choose a norn female, with the height slider at a minimum, as illustrated here (asura vs. norn. vs. human):

Posted Image

And this image illustrates the differences in headroom between GW1, GW2 (human) and another MMO (TSW in this case). As you can see, more headroom (as a result of a higher camera pivot) allows you to view the environment much more comfortably, while simultaneously avoiding the classic "up-skirt" angles (when you look up and the camera collides with the ground, causing a zoom into your charcter's buttocks). The GW2 images are all with the new FoV setting as well:

Posted Image

Finally, the image below illustrates what I mean by a good vertical FoV (which is further enhanced by character placement). If the camera pivot is too low, and the character is too centralized (too much foot-space, too little head-room), no amount of FoV increase will help you observe the environment at a comfortable resting angle for the camera (especially when zoomed out):
