most people dont really understand skills in this game. Show them a mesmer portal and they will be super suprised and not understand how that mechanic is in the game, and then they will roll a mesmer.

Its just ignorance, nothing more.

Maybe they think it is a hostile aoe, I frequently twitch out of friendly wells by accident myself

Alot of them won't initiate combo fields either, I had got a bunch of conditions on me and my removal was on cd so I threw a temporal veil(light field) down between myself and a ranger that was shooting at the boss hoping they'd help out. The ranger proceeds to swap to his greatsword(I know wtf) and runs through it to get swiftness and goes on to get himself killed because he tried to use a greatsword against the boss. Whatever I've just started to assume the worst in pugs

my general line of thinking is that a giant blob of pink on my screen isn't good.  honestly the first time I saw it I thought it was a huge boss aoe skill that was killing me (was just a boss' regular attack).  I'm trying to get better, and I don't do it much anymore, but I still see others do it all the time and get confused.

as stated above, assume the worst in pugs.

Hmmm is that so? Well I mainly run dungeons nowadays and group mates usually stick within the AoE. It does help that I will always try to position the AoE to overlap the most number of group mates. But i have seen group mates position themselves to be within the AoE. Different experiences I guess.

ANet designed a game where you would be making ad hoc groups with a *ton of different classes and people haven't learned to properly play together after like 2 months? Who would have known.

Calm down people will start to figure out what shit is, what will help them and what won't.

Maybe let them know that you're running TW, I find it helps a lot to just let them know before the boss fight that I'm running TW. Even if most mesmers run it, I point it out so that they're even aware that I'm a mesmer lol.

I do what other people do and drop it in an area that benefits most people, but I almost always run with a RL friend of mine who plays a ranger, so he uses his rapid shot and stuff inside of the skill and because we communicate when I drop it. But either drop it on people, or if you notice people always running out of it, after you use it and notice it, wait until after the fight and inform them, then tell them right before you use it again. Also, we have been so trained to move out of AoE circles that is sadly ingrained in so many peoples minds to just move out of it instantly

Before a dungeon run with a PUG, make everyone showcase their AoE spells' effects at a corner outside ;).

"Yeah, see this fountain of water coming from a rock in the ground? Its the ranger Healing Spring I will be casting."
"No... its not a bidet."

It's just like the first few years of GW1 because very few players use Mesmer (people like the big swords) and nobody knows what the Mesmer does. They just know that they hate fighting against Mesmers.

A lot of players who haven't played or leveled up a Mesmer high enough to get Time Warp haven't seen it enough to recognize that it is probably the strongest team spell in the game. When I play dungeons with uncoordinated newbies, it is often the make or break spell in a tough battle. Sometimes the players would go like "wow, am I lagging? is that a bug?" thinking that sometime weird is happening with their connection when they start attacking 2x faster. After I tell them what TIme Warp does, you can bet that they will all huddle inside it when they see it (sometimes with disasterous results when the boss AoEs inside the time warp).

It's especially fun when I play my Ele in COE or HOTW and half my AOEs look identical to boss AOEs. "No, no... don't dodge out of that one leap into it then blast so we all get Frost Armor.  Aggh, not that one though... that one will hit you for 10k..."

But... don't we dodge the red circles AOE and stay in the ones without red circle? XD That's how I tell which fountain/effect/whatever belongs to allies and which ones is from foes. Although 90% of the time I have no idea what those friendly AOEs are for, I just stay in there in case they have useful effects on me. :P

Would be nice to be able to set up macros tying skills to /party chat, cause it ain't always easy to see the red circles among the 4 billion other graphical effects going on in combat.

Don't bother with complicated explanations, people will forget and you'll have to explain anew to each group. Just say this: "White circles good, red circles bad." It helps if you've read Animal Farm for getting the right tone in your voice as you do this.

I always run into time warp, and then pop lich form, or death shroud.  Instant cast auto-attacks are my favorite kind of auto-attacks.

Do what I do promote the ridiculous giant bubble as you stand in this you get to the money faster. Personally i use it unnecessarily till people learn to stick to the bubble.

I have a mesmer alt, and I can recognize a time warp, but the only reason I run out of it is so that I can run back in. Because, most of the time the quickness doesn't apply, it starts working only after I cross the time warps line.

As a non-mesmer player myself i have to say i can't always tell if it's a time warp. The mesmer has multiple pink bubble abilities. I tend to just stand in all of them to see if it's actually time warp.

THANK you!  I've been trying to figure out how to do this.  I've tried ctrl+click, I've tried alt+click.  Not sure why I haven't tried shift+click yet. :P
