Hi guys I'm pretty new here so excuse any mistakes in formatting/manners.
Anyway this is meant to be an analysis of an 8-team single elimination tournament but I also have a question regarding how to decide on the 3rd vs 4th place teams.
Tournament formats: Single Elimination
# of teams: 8
Finishes (has some rewards): 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th
Non-finishes (no rewards): Four teams tied at 5th place (or 8th place)
Reward:
Paid: 500 Glory (1st), 400 Glory (2nd), 300 Glory (3rd/4th)
Paid: 400 Glory (1st), 300 Glory (2nd), 200 Glory (3rd/4th)
If you are in this tournaments, one of 4 scenarios may happen
(W=Win, L=Lose, E=Eliminated, no need to play any more games):
A) L E E (5th or "8th" place finish) <- 4 teams will achieve this
B) W L E (3rd/4th place finish) <- 2 teams will achieve this
C) W W L (2nd place finish) <- 1 team will achieve this
D) W W W (1st place finish) <- 1 team will achieve this
Example: W W L
If you won the first two games and lost the last, it will be a second place finish.
Question: W L E
If you lose in your second game, what will happen? I ask before two teams will achieve this and unlike the last place finish, they distinguish between 3rd vs 4th place finish...so how do they achieve it?
TL;DR:
How do they distinguish 3rd from 4th place in tourneys?
- By points scored?
- By length of match (so if both semi finals begin at the same time, the first team to lose will be 4th and the second team to lose will be 3rd)?
- By what team defeated you (If you were defeated by the eventual winners, you get 3rd place)
Each of the above methods aren't totally fair...so why not just call them both "=3rd place"?
Tournaments - 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th places and the rest

The team that lost to the winner of the last round is third, the other team is fourth. Who cares if it isn't fair? I want to know if I lost to a team mediocre enough to lose in the finals for whatever reason or if they actually won the tournament.
