This is a cosmetic issue, not a problem with the Retreat shout mechanic.  Does anyone else find Retreat a bit un-Guardian-like?  I feel rather silly in the middle of battle shouting "Retreat!" :P

I understand the concept.  Swiftness to run away, and Aegis to cover your backs.

I suggest changing the shout to "Charge!"  Now you're running headlong INTO battle, and using Aegis to absorb the first salvo.  Far less cowardly.  And who wouldn't feel empowered hearing your Guardian shouting "Charge!" mid battle?

Same mechanic.  Entirely different meaning.

I am a Guardian, and I approve this message.

well charge is already taken by the warrior. The way I see it the guardian is actually telling his team mates to retreat (hence it being a shout) so he can protect them, but hey everyone interpret things differently.

Heh yeah it does sound kind of silly when you shout in middle of 30-40 people zerg "Retreat", on the other hand i wouldn`t mind if it said "If you see me running, better keep up...." or "we take no prisoners" :P it`s a great skill !

My apologies to the Warrior community. :)  Although if it's about the Guardian getting his allies away, as you suggest, perhaps it should give allies swiftness/aegis, and the Guardian protection/regen (or something similar), and we can rename it "I got this!" lol

Absolutely agree.  Especially since I recently switched to a shout build.  Now I can run everywhere, and not have to keep swapping out skills between battles. :)  Plus with 20 points in virtues and Superior Aria.  Nice.

I couldn't agree with you more. I think the exact same thing every freaking day! Call it Charge for all the reasons you note! Also it works like Charge did in GW1, a group running buff, so why change it!? It would go better with Hold the Line and Stand Your Ground as well.

Also Save Yourself is a pretty weak skill name/audible shout too. I mean its like I've just cleansed you of your condi's now you'er on your own, see ya!?!?

WTF???

Lame!

No, not really. I would agree if the skill put up a protective bubble, but its just 1 block and a running buff so... yeah.

I personally always felt like it was your character actually meaning for his or her allies to retreat behind them as he or she takes the brunt of the enemy.

Pretty sure that one's meant to be the guardian telling his allies to save themselves and leave him behind, hence why he takes all their conditions and empowers himself for a last stand.

The aesthetic issues with the guardian shouts mostly just come down to them having purposes outside of the literal meaning of the shout which leads to odd situations (such as using retreat to charge as the OP points out).

I think every audio cue should just be "Behold the ocean's power!" because why the hell not ANet already put in the game.

Are you sure? I've heard plenty of other people's shouts, both from Guardian and Warrior (except Hold the Line, obviously).

I agree with G L J : "Incoming!" would be a great option; Aegis to block attacks, Swiftness to get out of AoE circles. Plus it was a GW1 skill, and so continuity and all that.

"Incoming" sounds good.  Also since we are at it,  how come sometimes you do not hear "Hold the Line" when you activate it?  I believe sometimes you would hear an audible from the application of Regeneration or Protection but not consistently "Hold the Line"

(thinking of another catchy suggestion for "Retreat"......)

It's nice to hear I'm not the only bothered by my guardian constantly shouting 'Retreat' :)

I wouldn't mind a different audio cue, 'Incoming' would work or even 'Take Cover' if ArenaNet wants to keep the same sense.

Actually I think 'Take Cover' is a good compromise, it sounds less cowardly and still gets the idea they seem to want for the skill (although I agree I seldom ever use it for retreating, I use it primarily to give people aegis).

You should post this in the official forum Suggestions.

"Save Yourselves" is actually directed at the enemies, warning them that they are about to get decimated. "Retreat" is similar, it warns the enemy that the Guardian and his buddies are about to catch them and kick their asses. Guardians are very generous fighters you know.

It should not be "Retreat!" IMO because it is a GW1 Warrior skill, and since Guardian is Monk/Paragon inspired it should be named something like "Incoming!"

This fixes the silliness of hearing "Retreat" when in fact you are engaging, or just running to another location, but it also keeps with the actual Guardian ancestry.

Perhaps you're joking, but "Save Yourselves!" is also a GW1 carry over and has always meant for your teammates to save themselves. The original ability gave (only) your allies increased armor. (While you might think my first argument invalid because "SY!" was a warrior ability, everybody who played GW1 knows "SY!" was meant for and shined in the hands of P/W's)

I always took my Guardian yelling "Retreat!" as a warning to other characters...  Telling them to run and hide while I ran in defending them.  It sounded very Guardian-like to me.

As far as what other people hear, that's, "I can outrun a centuar!"  Every time I heard my character yell, "Retreat!" he would reply, "Yes hunny, I know you can."  (at least that's how it was in beta)

My norn guardian yelling that would be awesome!

How about just a primal scream?  Then it's open to interpretation.  It's either a berserker yell charging into battle, or the pathetic screams of a coward. lol  Ok, that was NOT a serious suggestion. :)

If it's meant as a warning, let's go Dr Who on it: "Basically....run!"
