Those events are not on a timer, they occur when the prerequisite events have been completed. I remember reading the map chat while I was completing the prereq to the shatterer with one groupmate how everyone was angry the event wasn't starting according to "the timer" when we were about 200 feet away while they stood around. If we walked away they would have been waiting forever.

We knew the pre requisite events, but the swamp was always "dormant".

Oddly, the only time I ever saw the event was when someone from Anet was actually on. Had two characters go through Queensdale, no boss.
Wayfarer's works all the time, though. Fire Elemental, too, though I don't think anyone does it.

I am glad I was there when the game launched and maps were full of players. If you are starting now, get used to this lack of events.
I have managed to participate in all the dragon events except this one. I have personally flogged the lead up steps only to see it fizzle out so many times, I decided to move on.
If you are still determined to see this particular event, show up at prime time, (8pm-ish Mon-Thur) and make sure you ask for help in map chat. Good luck with that.

While we are at it, get rid of the stupid waypont costs so that players can easily join announced events and help the few players that are in a zone get together and play!

Last time I did it I was in the monestary and we were attacked by portals spewing mobs out, when that was completed the big guy spawned.

I mean I was 6 hours or so in this zone until I was leveled too high. If the thing spawned, surely someone would have mentioned it in the zone chat. Additionally, a guy who was doing dungeon runs in this zone also mentioned that he hasn't seen any chatter about the boss for a long time.
It just seemed odd!

Hydra event, more likely is on timer. Once the Ship on the back of the Island disappear the event reset and will start in 10-15mins. I waited about an hout that to happen. Some people say that the island need to be cleared of risen, but I dont see how this is possible, The risen spawn constantly.
At least this are my observations.

Go there and click your server's dragon timer, and then scroll down to 'all timers'
They should have the timer for the shadow behemoth for your server

And what is strange indeed is that in some areas you can almost see every event that's taking place in the area (like in the Dredgehaunt area) while in Queensale I get a message "new event nearby" very often without anything showing on the map.

In Caledon there is a guy who spawns in that town that's always overrun by the nightmare court. He starts the swamp pre event but what starts him to become "start the swamp event guy" I have no idea. If you see him with the sunburst over his head you can start the swamp event.

Take Bloodtide Coast: Covington is on a timer, but we have no idea what that timer is exactly. This means that a player has to log in several times a day to be lucky enough to find this event going on. It is fine that it only appears at certain times, I mean it can't be expected to be up constantly, being a lootfest for the hardcore players, but there should at least be some way for people to be able to see through it. Then there's the secondary conditions: It will not start when Risen Captain is up. What's up with that? So the regular event that comes up several times while the timer is up on the meta event can actually block it? How were we supposed to know that without some in depth analysis? What does this mean for the functionality of the timer: Will it restart if the Risen Captain is still up when the mark is hit, or will it just wait its turn? I don't know about the rest of the players, but I personally just want to play the game, not make it an actual job.
Ok, so I have before heard some argument against timers and hints and such, saying that they do not want people to follow a timer for an event so they can make farming parties from this information. My response to this is: Why? Are we so much against farming that we will make the game so much more difficult for everyone? Who has ever complained saying, "I saw that guy in the same quest before, now this party is seriously ruined"? I don't get this logic. They want to make the game casual friendly, but you don't do that by making it an enemy of the hardcore players. In fact, the casual player will be affected the most, seeing as he will be the one who logs on one evening, sees that the event isn't up, has no clue how to get it up or when it'll be up, and as a result never gets to play it because of his casual nature. The hardcore player will find this lack of clues a nuisance, but will actually make some in depth research on it, thereby finding a way around it. Everyone loses!
Fantastic game. I really love it. But this is an oversight of the big ones in my opinion.

We were only 4 people there in the swamp, as it was late in the night. So you can quit saying that the event depends on how many players are around.
