Thief condition damage build.

note: i'm not stating this is "THE" way to play a condition damage Thief, this is just what I have discovered to be the best build for me so far.

note 2: don't expect to be blown away with new info and expect this to be the godbuild for a Thief. I just had a hard time finding a build that I enjoyed and was happy about and want to share it with the rest of you. nothing more nothing less.

General:

I wanted a Thief that would dish out above average damage, have nice survivability and that is very mobile. I did not want to focus on backstab damage and always have to focus where i'm positioned according to my enemy.

This build came together thanks to the people posting and discussing builds on the internet and all the other Thiefs I had the chance discussing Thief business with and were able to give me tips and advice. I don't want to claim this build to be mine but I forgot all the names of the people where I found reliable info. Credit to all the people that helped me with this ;-)

Let's get to business.

Traits:

0/0/20/30/20

Shadow arts 20 points

infusion of shadows (V)
Patience (X)

pretty obvious for the initiative regen, which is very important.

Acrobatics 30 points

Power of Inertia (II) - more damage
Pain Response (VIII) - survivability
Quick Recovery (IX) - initiative gain

Trickery 20 points

Uncatchable (III) - caltrops are fantastic! They drop with every roll you do.
Trickster (VIII) - tricks recover 20% faster

Skills

90% of the time I use Dagger / Dagger.
My 2nd weapon is Shortbow or pistol / pistol depending on the situation. (PVE)

The main skill here is Death blossom. AOE damage that gives bleed stacks to all enemies it hits.

Hide in shadows
-nice heal.
-go in stealth to hide or gank and this regains initiative thanks to the trait choices.

Roll for initiative
-Escape from being CC'd.
-gain 6 initiative!

Caltrops
-because they are awsome!
-Cripple's foes
-Bleed stacks ftw!

Signet of Shadows
-An extra 25% runspeed which is awsome.
-Blinding enemies

Elite: Dagger storm
-Very nice Elite skill. Damage + bleed stacks and not being able to get cc'd!

Gear

This is a work in progress, and I haven't tested or discussed this topic as much as I would have liked, here is probably some room for improvement.

Armor:
Rampager's set. (power/precision/condition damage)
Rune (x6):

Superior rune of the Afflicted (condition damage and bleed duration %)
Daggers:

power/vitality/condition damage x2

All my weapons have Superior sigil of Agony, which increases inflicted bleeding duration by 10%.

Jewelry: Coral rampager set with exquisite coral jewel.

Build Playstyle

Strong points:

-whenever you roll you drop caltrops
-whenever you roll you gain might = more damage
-every dodge = regaining endurance (almost constant roll available
-endurance not full = 10% extra damage (roll roll roll is the message here)
-caltrops cripple and give you extra bleed stacks
-while dodging and using deathblossom you're basically untouchable.

Basically you are continously in motion, always moving around, dodging and jumping.
Generally I roll into my target already hitting him with caltrops, it's crippled, already has bleeding stacks and my endurance isn't full which gives me 10% extra damage. From here I continue spamming Death Blossom, doing damage and stacking even more bleed stacks. In between I keep rolling to make sure my endurance isn't full. I pop my caltrops skill for some more stacks and even more damage. (regular mobs are long gone by now) Ater my first series of DB's I use steal to regain some initiative and do another couple of DB's.

This is basically my standard play. you can regain extra initiative by going in stealth and/or using roll for initiative.

Weak points:
-low damage from shortbow and pistols

WvW

I'm not that experienced on WvW as I would like, I play it daily but I have a lot to learn. I'm not the one to give advice on WvW tbh. I haven't explored al lthe possibilities for pvpbuilds as well.

The only adjustment I make is, I remove the caltrop skill for an extra stealth skill. And I switch the trickster (VIII) trait to Bountifull theft (VII).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is basically the V1.0 of my build. I hope it helps somebody that was in the same situation as me and enjoy it as muc has I do.
I'm also hoping for a discussion where I can maybe learn something new, improve the build and maybe get to know a few fellow Thiefs.

Greetz,

GS.

I would check on Patience....I never saw any benefit using it in testing. Try it out on mobs...Go with no regen talents, run your initiative down then go into stealth, see what you regen, then try it with Patience. I never saw any gain in testing myself, maybe it has been fixed since then, but I never noticed...or the regen is so meh that it makes no difference (I figured that was the case tbh)

True statement... I'm not entirely sure what shadow arts is doing in this build tbh unless you're trying to make it more survivable... in which case you should pick either shadow protector (5 seconds of regen on stealth) or shadow's embrace (remove 1 condition every 3 seconds) instead of patience.

You should know that if you have two sigils which have the same name on your currently out weapon set, (i.e. 2 Sigils of Agony on dagger/dagger), then the effects won't stack.

my advice for WvW is don't play it with this build.

This is obviously a PvE build.  Not sure why you'd post it in the PvP board.

hmm I didn't see this was the pvp section, thought it was just the "thief" section.
I'll test the "patience" thing and change it out to see the difference.

As for not playing in WvW, i'm aware there are much better builds for wvw, but i haven't rly focused on pvp yet. I play around in wvw withthis build and I stack the kills and do pretty good, so it's not completely useless.

if an admin could move this to the pve zone plz.
I didn't see there was a pve and pvp zone on the forums as this was meant to be in the pve zone.

thanks in advance.

It is more like it depends on the sigils.  Extra damage ones do not stack.  Ones like bloodlust that stack boons after a kill, simply reach the max stack faster, but do not exceed the amount for a single sigil.  You can mix sigils that stack things with ones that give some boon each kill, like the speed sigil.  Generally speaking you should not put two of the same sigil on dual weapons.

Otherwise very nice build, I hope to include some of the features in my own thief.
