***NEW INFO FROM ANET 14/11***: https://forum-en.gui...irst#post721451

Quote

Our Studio Design Director Chris Whiteside just posted this:

“I’d like to respond to concerns players have raised about ascended items. Please keep in mind that we’re releasing this as one portion of a massive November update that introduces and improves many aspects of challenge, progression, and rewards. With this and upcoming updates, we view ourselves as introducing large amounts of content with supporting systems and features, akin to an expansion pack, building on Guild Wars 2 through a series of live releases. So it’s important for us to be able to add an expansion pack’s worth of progression and rewards to support that content.

Our goal is not to create a gear treadmill. Our goal is to ensure we have a proper progression for players from exotic up to legendary without a massive jump in reward between the two. We will slowly add the remaining ascended gear items and legendary items in future updates to allow people time to acquire them as we add exciting new content that deserves exciting rewards. We will not be adding a new tier of gear every 3 months that we expect everyone to chase after and then get the next set and so on.

Ascended and infusion rewards will be available in both PvE and WvW over time, and be made available through all sorts of content around the world including existing content. PvP will remain unaffected to ensure our intended PvP balance going forward. We are also working on other reward and progression systems for the game that tie into current and new content and features. As you know we care very much about your support and opinion and are listening intently to what you say.
Finally we look forward to hearing your thoughts on the upcoming content, and we will ensure we share our thoughts with you on the experiences we share in the Lost Shores."

Chris Whiteside – Studio Design Director

With great challenges come great rewards. The patch will introduce ascended items. Ascended armors are "slightly more powerful than exotics" and can, in some cases, hold slots for infusions. Infusions will allow you to increase your character's power. Guild Wars players are familiar with infusing armor, although I'll be my hat that the process doesn't involve creepy Seers this time 'round.

Cliffs:

-Infusions are to counter a new monster condition called Agony, which degens health.
-Deeper into the new dungeon->Agony gets stronger (need infusions)
-Infusions acquired via mystic forge.
-Infusions can only be slotted into Ascended gear
-Instead of upgrade slots, Ascended gear has Infusion slots, and rarer versions of the items also come with additional Agony Resistance built into them.
-Players will be able to acquire Ascended Rings in the Fractals of the Mists dungeon, and Ascended items worn on the back can be acquired through special Mystic Forge recipes. (only back slot and ring items to begin with)
-All legendaries will be buffed when ascended weapons come some time in the future.

NO.  Bad Arenanet.  Plenty of other games do this already.  Stick to your guns.    Stop adding gear tiers.

To try and keep people playing longer with a gear treadmill, obviously, since that's pretty much the only way they can do progression post-80 without an almost complete redesign and rebalancing of the game from the ground up.

More audience -> more wow guys -> more whiners for unusual endgame.

That was foreseen.

That Anet would just accept and follow them NO.

And is just shit.

(admitting that what is written is actually as we think - endgame raiding like gear threadmill.)

I have no desire to grind for gear or be put at a disadvantage vs other players for not doing so, no matter how slight, and will quit the game before it happens. I know I'm not the only one.

Oh come on, GW1 had me playing for 6 years without a gear threadmill.

I seriously hope we get some "Everything went better than expected"-response from Anet with the details, because adding gear grind now means this game is over (for me) within 3 months rather than 6 years.

All right I have calmed down.  1.  Let's wait and see what it actually is.  2.  Media is notorious for presenting things incorrectly.

The infusion in GW1 was only helpful against Mursaat. There was no bonus versus players or anything else and you gained the infusion as part of a mission making it lore and gameplay relevant.

A next power lvl of armor is just wrong and smacks of bowing to the grind happy WoW winers.

Are the legendary weapons gonna get a boost now too?

Armor was infused in the original GW through a storyline mission, to provide resistance to the monster skill Spectral Agony. Originally you had to repeat the mission for each piece of armor, but eventually one run was sufficient for an entire set.

It wasn't an armor stat, and only functioned to resist that specific skill.

I agree, though i am not mad, i kinda saw this coming as well. Just wonder how this armor will work, are they going to be drops or only get them from chests or what. I have to say though the new island does look pretty nice.

Maybe a forshadow of the return of the Mursaat?

I really hope that's the case... If not, "Arenanet lied to us!!" sh*tstorm will come again (and they would be finally true tbh). And I don't see any reason why this new armor should be better than exotic, while legendary weapons are equal to exotic ones. If they look nice, people will work for them anyway.

I love how the dungeon itself sounds: Like a challenge.

I totally hate the prospect of getting "new" BIS Gear with that content patch. If I wanted that, I'd be brewmastering my panda alter ego through mists - I don't need that any more and more importantly I don't _want_ it any more.

They clearly can't decide if they want GW2 to be a pvp game or a pve game, so they are just gonna clutter-sputter their way along.

Yea, there is that feeling now (depending on how the actually implement this). Spend your karma/gold/time on getting exotics, next few days there is an update with a higher stat tier of armor. You just lose out and now have to work all over again for the max armor :|

Although I'm wondering what brought this change? did their internal data show that players were dropping out from the game at too large of a pace? so they decided to go back to the old mmo standards to reappeal to players to come back to get the latest new gear?

Well...shit.

I'm hoping they stop here with the tiers, and keep these tiers exclusive to challenge dungeons. They can do a lot with the transfusion system as they did with GW1. I'm weary of the fact that he said "chance" though...

Edit: Didn't really say chance. Trembling with rage...thoughts not cogent

Why does it matter to you? you don't need to get the armour. It's optional, even if its the stats are slightly better. Legendaries are also better and they were in before ascended. No one whined about that?

no, its not. for a treadmill you need more kind of armor repeatedly added to the game. if they introduce a totally new kind of armor with infusion, its not a treadmill. its simply being put in as a new kind of armor. exotics with higher item lvl? treadmill, new kind of armour? no. btw...before you say otherwise again..you think they will add new kind of armours every patch now? i guees they must be highly creative X3

so calm down everyone, maybe its just a lie anyway :D

I really hope this is a GW1 like Ascended, not the start of a gear treadmill. The former I won't mind as it's odd you can go to Orr etc without touching Story then get told about Risen like they are new when you've killed thousands, but if it's the latter then I wonder how long it will be before groups kick you from them for not having Ascended armour for the dungeon.

But if it actually is statistically better than exotics like exotics are to rares, that puts it two notches above "regular" gear.  When there is just one degree of separation that leads to very little increased perfromance it really does not matter.  Two degrees is how it starts because his gear could possibly be meaningfully better than rares.

The bigger problem here is it shows they are willing to keep raising the gear ceiling.  So even if this is not a proper treadmill it is a fine start depending on what they mean by this armor is better.
