Hi there,
couple of days ago while derping around LA, i found this photo.
The photo highly resembles huge tentacles within high waves, which you will get when a kraken rise, obviously, which is grabbing what is looks like a human and a couple humans are running away.
however i can’t read krytanPosted Image
so the whole text under the photo is a pure blah blah blah for me.
today i saw the lost shores udpate notes, it says:
They came from beneath the waves—the “karka”, a monstrous new species bent on destruction!

"Karka" is obviously derived from Kraken, however they are more like a crab species.

your thoughts?

Karka are aquatic creatures with hard external shells - they were likely just forced out of the Unending Ocean (alongside the krait and largos). They'll be the main focus of The Lost Shore content update, but don't resemble what we know of the DSD's minions. (for more)

Krakens exist in Guild Wars, and they're not tied to karkas (as far as we know) or the DSD. They live in the Jade Sea and Unending Ocean.

I believe that (one of?) these two posters depict karkas:

The former looks very similar - as denoted in another thread - with the Leviathan Eyes from GW1, inhabitants of the Jade Sea.

And a cleaner image of the one you posted:
Spoiler

Most of the text is just laughing stuff.

The tentacles coming out of the waves likely is a reference to the DSD's minions, though, as the depiction for it was that the DSD twists waters into tentacled monstrocities. And I don't think that karka is derived from kraken, irregardless of four shared letters with only two switched of those four.

So I was looking at the Lost Shores' guildwars2.com page and it seems we get images of karkas (at least I presume these are karkas, since these images are right next to lines about them and the activities involving them):

I like how they show the monster at the begining of the cinematic and then try to impress us by building tension at the end just to finish by showing the same thing.
Idk it made me laugh...

And I'm pretty sure we will just be introduced to Bubbles minions and not the dragon itself. I hope they won't be corrupted form of the already known wildlife/races like all the others... If karkas are minions then its a good begining!

They could be dragon minions, or maybe they've just been forced out like the krait and quaggan. The DSD's ability was to create tentacled creatures from the water, and has been producing corrupted minions from lakes and rivers near where it resides. I'd be surprised if we don't get to see already known wildlife and races, like the krait and quaggan, corrupted by it at some point.

Karka is derived from Karkinos, the giant crab that Hercules fought in Greek mythology. It's also the creature depicted by the constellation Cancer (the crab).

If you read Homestuck, that's also the origin of Karkat Vantas's name. He's the troll associated with Cancer on the zodiac.

I sort of thought of it as a reference to a popular novel by Murakami Haruki called "Kafka on the Shore." Karka sounds similar to Kafka, we have lost shores, and that's where the Karka are :P

But the most likely is as the poster above me mentioned.

If they were going to make a Kafka reference, we'd probably be fighting giant roaches instead.
