I've been having a really hard time drawing for a really long time, haven't picked up a pencil or tablet more than once or twice since about this time last year. But, Guild Wars has had a profound impact on encouraging me to try to jump back into it again, so this past week I've been working on a Sylvari artwork that I decided probably wouldn't hurt to share.

Posted Image

It's far from perfect (I actually never intended to finish it at first, so I was pretty sloppy about certain things), so try to ignore the numerous flaws, for the sake of my sanity. But, it was also the first time I attempted this kind of style (This is the kind of stuff I usually do, more cartoony), so I can't say I'm not a little proud that the result actually looks, you know, discernable. ;D

Anyways, thanks for taking a look. Hope you enjoy. I may decide to work on some more if my enthusiasm doesn't run away again, so I'll be sure to post them up here if/when that happens. :P

Peace!

its pretty good actually...
- nice simple background
- good greens

howvere there is something im having trouble ignoring lol...
- the top half of her body looks a little odd, mainly around the shoulder and arms
- also i think the lighting on her arms isnt th eright approach

but her legs are close to epic -- detailed and once again nicely coloured.

You do better than me anyhow... so good job. (im useless with colour)

Haha, thanks ^^

I have no problems admitting I am absolutely terrible with lighting. :) I've never been all that great at shadow placement, but, it's definitely something I'll keep working at improving in the future.

The arms were the last thing I worked on, so I rushed through them as a bit of an afterthought -- they definitely could be better. I may go back and try to touch up some of the issues if I get the chance.

Again, thanks! I'll keep those things in mind when I start working on something else.

great art, reminds me of my brothers style.

i have asked my brother to do some work himself for the forums, and i think he did start on something, but like everything else he started and never finished.

That's kinda where I've been for the last year, too. It can be hard to pick up something and take it all the way to the end -- but when you like the subject matter enough, you find a way to push yourself. ;)

I love it! she looks edible :D

I wonder, does Sylvari fall into the vegetable food group? Or fruit, since they come from a tree?! ^^

It looks great! I remember my first line-less painting. It was so exciting! Though nowhere near as good as this. xD

The details are nice, as is the greenery foresty background and the rays of light.

You probably already know most of the things that can be worked on, so I won't critique specifically. The only thing I'll say is that I'd really really love to see more colours mixed into those greens and browns and the palette in general!

But anyways, hope you do more work and I can't wait to see them!

Haha, I still had to go back in with a low opacity brush and add in some "lines" here and there just to make myself feel a bit more secure. Taking off the training wheels is hard, especially when working with a background -- I was very tempted to leave it white, at first. I'm glad I finally added in something. (Though, I did discover that the reason that her right arm looks so funny is one of the sketch layers I turned off had a good chunk of her arm on it. Oops.)

Color is definitely something I want to work on in the future. The links you put up on your post were really really helpful, but since a majority of the coloring was done by then, it was too late to really change that too much. I have a really, really hard time of leaving a palette larger than like 3 colors -- but, like I said, those training wheels do gotta come off someday. :)

It's good to know areas I can improve on, so I'll keep making an effort to go in the right direction.

Nothing wrong with cartoony :) That's a nice Rider you've got there too, what Weyr is she from? (I used to RP Pern characters ALL the time)

Nope, nothing wrong with cartoony. :D I just wanted to try something different, so this was very far out of my 'comfort' zone so to speak. It was a great learning experience! I like to branch out every once in a while, just to see if I like doing something else a bit more, or even just to see if I can.

The dragonrider is my character Dex and Nazkriuulth from High Reaches, on the game Harpers Tale. I used to spend a ridiculous amount of time RPing, myself. ^^

Back to the art though, it's fantastic to try to go out of your comfort zone! I need to do that more often. I've found that trying different styles now and again can be a lot of fun and very educational :)

Thanks! I do see what you mean -- I think the yellow tinge I added to the cheeks gives a misrepresentation of the lighting, so it makes it more difficult to see the shadow along her cheekbone, making her face look a bit pudgier. I'll make sure to refine my facial shading in the future. ^^

... You played on HT too? O.O  Talk about a small freakin' world! Hahaha! It was (and pry still is) the 'it' place for Pern RP. I still miss mah bluerider.

I really learned so much doing this drawing, particularly lighting/shading. It's far from perfect, but better than most of my 'lined' cases in the respect that I usually tend to slap shadows wherever I feel like without thinking about depth. In this case, gotta be much more careful because otherwise it looks bizarre. :)

Just finished a sketch of an Asura that I need to decide how to color. Hmm!

Oh and -- yes, more Tigerfeet artz plz. ;)

Drew up this Asura for my friend, who will be playing an Asura Elementalist at release. For those that are curious, his right ear reads, "Lies!", because that's something my friend says... a lot.

This drawing really shows my incredible weakness drawing hands, which I sloppily tried to hide behind some glowing balls of wussy looking flame. I know. I'm ashamed. (Edit: just noticed his chin is crooked too. Ha. Haha. Wow. How did I miss that? I'm blind. XD )

I wish I could change the title of this thread, since I'm obviously not drawing just plant people... But... Eh. ^^ I guess I'll live.

Thanks, actionjack! I tend to be pretty poor on lighting, which is why I wanted to try something with some extreme lighting conditions. Better to practice them when they're extreeemmmeee!

I bet you could color if you tried. ;) All it takes is time and patience. (The dreaded answer to how to learn anything!)

Hahaha! Aye... I have to say, I'm a bit disappointed that Sylvari have pointed ears, or even ears at all. As plant beings, they seem almost a bit *too* humanesque... But that may be so that the other races of Tyria were able to feel more sympathetic towards them. Still... Didn't need to make 'em pointy and attract all the 'elf' stereotypes that are rather unfortunate.

Gotta say though, I love the Asura. I kinda wish they hadn't over-cutsiefied them for GW2, but, ah well. They look huggable.

I always find it interesting to see others' WIPs, because I like seeing how the drawings start off -- I find it so great because I myself always have incredibly 'blargh' beginnings.

Here's the initial sketch of the asura drawing, compared to the finished product:

Thanks! If you're curious, the writing says "Eternal Alchemy," because I couldn't come up with anything more interesting to put on it. ;)

Well, you'd never know the difference, your backgrounds rock. ^^ My problems lie in depth and detail... I've focused so much on figure drawing that I don't even really know how to draw trees or rocks or anything. So, when I attempt to, it just looks ridiculous. I'll get around to it one of these days... May take some art classes at some point for help. :)
