So Anet boasted about their water combat being different than other games. Well it is different. You get different skills in water and there are no breath bar. But is that enough to enjoy water combat?

As for me I would say that's not enough and I don't really care about water combat, especially in PvP. And it seems everyone prefers land combat.

What do you think. Maybe it would be better if Anet would have been just focused on land combat to make it much better than it is instead of wasting time on water combat that no one likes (I assume that most of players do not like, but would be great if moderators could make a poll to see how many people like and do not like water combat).

I've been a fan of 3D arena combat ever since Custom Robo so I had very high hopes for water combat in GW2. Sadly ANet didn't get this right. Water combat basically equates to spamming attacks while strafing in one diraction and dodging occasionally. There little consideration to be had with terrain since you're almost always fighting in open space. Another thing that bugs me is that there's little room for improvement with skill level. If you're disadvantaged underwater there's little that can be done to stop an opponent from killing you unless you're able to run away.

I've hated fighting while swimming / flying in other games just as much as I do in this game. There's nothing Anet can do about that, as I simply lack the awareness that is required for 3D fighting. I manage to miss mobs while using whirlpool, there's no hope for me in this area so I just pray they never add anything to the game that requires me to do extended water combat.

That being said, the underwater areas do look amazing most of the time.

I wouldn't hate water combat as much if the weapon skills weren't shit. They completly screw over your build.

The only thing I know, Tatsuo, is that your avatar is HELLA AWESOME. Because Thrice is best.

On topic, I prefer this water combat than just simply swimming and using crappy abilities.

Water combat is ok, not great or amazing just ok.

This is a game of maneuver and dodging neither work very well underwater.
One on one and small numbers are fine but its been said its just spam skills.

Large numbers are a pain because the computer knows exactly where I am in 3D and precisely where to move and aim and it can do these calculations very fast.
I have to look around and see the enemies.

Its worth putting up with it because of the exploration which is great.

Thanks. Thrice is one of my favorite bands :)

On Topic.

I'm wondering if Anet actually enjoys water combat, because I find that hard to believe.

I'm enjoying the exploration, but the combat feels a bit... weird. Some classes have some stuff that appeals to me (e.g. the engi's brutal grenade kit, the thiefs evading and blocking spear, the mesmers trident) but I prefer avoiding it if possible. It can be a nice change of pace at times but I really only engage when I absolutely have to.

There's no depth perception. My only gripe really. Ocarina of Time has ruined underwater levels for me unfortunately. Although the water temple has been made significantly easier on the 3DS, the damage has been done and there's no going back.

My issue with underwater combat is that the moment I dip my toes in a pool of water, I get essencially nuttered.

Half my skills are gone, my Elite skill becomes restricted, my damage is reduced by half and my headgear is switched to the poor excuse of armor offered by a random karma merchant. In HotW, both the underwater bosses become excruciatingly boring due to this.

I'd ask for a fix, but I know that ain't going to happen.

No different than air combat.

I think its pretty well-done in general, but there's a very nice touch I really liked from WoW's Vash'jr underwater zone - we get back on our feet at the bottom of the sea and move with bounding strides.

More importantly, we get back our ground based camera swivel lock and combat movement can once again be on a single plane.
It would be a really, really nice feature to have in the much richer underwater content GW2 has.

I'm a fan of water combat since super mario brothers water stage :)

i like everything so far about GW2's water combat  except the vulnerability while swimming on the surface.

I regularly use the water to cliff dive and shake of incessant WvW chasers....

People just can't run away in a water combat, you can either swim slowly away from the enemy while being hit or fight to the death.

...i am the only person in my guild (and the world) who likes underwater combat. i like fighting someone, only to have them move above or below me. i spin around trying to find them... it feels far more deadly/dynamic than on land.

I like it a lot more than I thought I would, and, as mentioned above, the exploration part is awesome.

But there's definitely a LOT of room for improvement in the combat department. Too many of the professions have NO underwater elites, which is an uneven handicap, and many of the underwater weapons are generally not as powerful as their abovewater counterparts.

If they were to polish up underwater combat and make it feel as complete and smooth as combat on land, more people would enjoy it.

My issue with underwater combat has nothing to do with controls... I just find the skills so much weaker(and yes, my gear is on par with my level)!

I've hated fighting underwater in any game I've played, Guild Wars 2 is no exception.
It's executed well enough, but it's not fun, it screws over your current build most of the time, and the general control is just awkward.
Also see; classes with a bunch of ground-target utilities becoming useless.

I generally avoid water best I can.

It would be a lot better if we could use our normal weapons instead of the gimped harpoon/trident.

Underwater combat is great...on an engineer.

All the underwater weapon skills kinda suck. And the many situational ones are quite frankly, useless.

Grenades underwater are amazing thought, even after the speed nerf.
